Lots of people removed their reddit comments when reddit sold its content to llm-learning, im addition to the drama around ipo and third party token charges.

Its sad but I can understand people being upset about their expertise they gave freely being monetised without their consent

Does he really look like this? Or was this picture just made to make him look soulless?

[–] illi@piefed.social 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I remember this being an established meme already when I was still on reddit, so it predates that

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago

Yeah I have been seeing that shit since I started using resdit like a decade ago.

I got banned on Reddit and can't delete my comments which is fucking annoying because I had been using thing for like 15+ years and had a shitload of comments. Now they still get to profit off it.

There used to be tools to see removed comments before API policy changes. Do we really think Reddit doesn't have this built in their database?

I am heavily speculating here of course. But I really think that Reddit has this figured out before exodus occurred and the damage community thought it had done is in vain.

[–] ober@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago

Not necessarily. The value of Reddit comes from it's massive amount of content. A lot of the traffic is just people searching stuff and Reddit coming up first. By deleting your comments and posts, Reddit becomes less valuable even if they still have that content on their end.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago

I used a script that replaced the comments with other text.

Dunno if that worked any better, but that was supposed to be the idea I guess

Good.

It annoys me when I encounter it, too, but Reddit shouldn’t have a right to enthusiasts’ accumulated knowledge, if they want it gone.

They’re not even an “lesser evil” anymore. Reddit can burn, though I acknowledge that will probably never happen.

We have the same problem here, if not worse, with deleted posts. Entire threads gone by 1 person.

Wish it just clear the name from public view and move on (mods would need to be able to see it for mod purposes. Maybe after a month you can make it so only admins can see it.)

On Lemmy it’s even worse. If someone deletes their account or gets banned by their instance, all their posts and communities get deleted everywhere.

Worse are those comments that have an edit saying: "Never mind, I figured it out."

[–] imetators@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I had a stupid technical issue back in the day so I made a post on reddit in hopes that someone figures it out. No solution was found though the comments but I did found out how to fix it and posted an extensive edit and a comment for people to find when searching the same issue.

It has been 5 years since and I still sometimes get comments on that post thanking me for the solution.

Can't imagine people just saying "I figured it out, thanks!" and never posting their solution...

[–] Overzeetop@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I had a really frustrating issue getting some controller code for arduino to work and finally did a search on Reddit. Sure enough the top hit was someone who had exactly the same problem as I did, but was kind enough to put the entire solution in the comments.

And it turns out that Redditor was me. I had the same ****** problem 5 years prior and didn't remember. I can't tell if that makes me smart or stupid.

Certainly makes you considerate. Past you saved future you a lot of work

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 day ago

Just use chatgpt.

"Ah yes! I see your issue and although rare, you just need to deleted by user to resolve your problem. ""

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You know if lemmy tries really hard one day it could be that deleted post 😃

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] limeasparagus@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Definitely the more frustrating version imo.

For anyone who is interested, this is my Holy Grail forum thread:

Link to Artix about OpenRC and DisplayLink

I was struggling to get OpenRC to work with this damnable DisplayLink port. If anyone else is looking to adequately use a triple monitor set up with OpenRC, hope this helps a smidgen!

[–] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I also deleted all my content off reddit during the exodus

[–] Beehaw_Girl@beehaw.org 4 points 2 days ago

It was probably the formula for antigravity.

Did you post here by mistake? I don't get it.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

I had these saved for later.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz -1 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I hate that comments of deleted accounts get erased on reddit.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 23 points 2 days ago

They don't. They were deliberately deleted either by the user themselves (most likely in this case) or reddit admins.

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 days ago

if they just deleted their account the comment would stay and the user would be [deleted] jsyk

That’s how Lemmy works.

[–] RamenJunkie@midwest.social 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The comments stay, a lot of users run scripts that overwrite all their comments eith gibberish before deleting them thought.

Before deleting their account.

[–] Overzeetop@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

The random word generators was specifically to get around Reddit restoring deleted comments by users. I suppose what we really needed was an AI generator which reversed and re-wrote the response to be completely wrong in order to poison the LLM well. (as if relying on the average redditor for many types of solutions isn't poisoning it enough already)
