Rules: (interactive)

1) Be nice and; have funDoxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them

2) All posts must end with a '?'This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?

3) No spamPlease do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.

4) NSFW is okay, within reasonJust remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com. NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].

5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions. If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.

6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online

7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. hello fedi! looking for an actually decent search engine! any recommendations?

by actually decent i mean:
- no "ai". zero. whatsoever. zilch. nada. none. did i mention zero.
- not just repackaging results from other search engines
- not run by complete and utter fuckwads

thanks! :) /gen

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi I've been daily driving Uruky, it's got a long ways to go but progress is being made. (there's definitely a lot of things that #Kagi still does better.)

Been trying to keep track of bugs and suggestions i have

i'm using ecosia.org and etools.ch, but these are all 'repackaging from other engines'.

maybe try yandex (ya.ru)?

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi i am not aware of any, nor do i think it's likely that one exists.

The level of anti-bot defenses deployed across the internet in response to LLM crawlers is so high that it's basically impossible to create an independent search index in 2026. If you're not already one of a handful of trusted crawlers you're just gonna get cloudflare and anubis block pages.

@GroupNebula563 @asklemmy @askfedi the one idea i had was a browser extension where users seeing an index-worthy page could click a button to manually add the DOM from their session to a curated index, after passing whatever anti scrape countermeasures were in use.

No crawling, just users voting "i think other people should be able to find this page".

If it weren't for point 2 I would have recommended Searx. And if it weren't for point 1 I would have recommended Ecosia, Qwant, or Mojeek.

Marginalia search is great for sifting past all the big tech results that usually show up in search and for finding smaller websites

I don't know how they get their results or from where, but I like StartPage for the lack of AI.
