Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I hate it when manufacturers remove useful stuff to make laptops as flat as possible. Sure, some things disappear because time moves on, like CD drives, but WHY do I need to buy an extension cord to connect my laptop to an ethernet cable? It's not just Apple, even a lot of Thinkpads lack a proper RJ45 port these days

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

i don't understand who even wants a laptop so thin it can legitimately cut soft bread, i understand wanting them light but surely you want a laptop to fit your hand when closed???
I'm equally baffled with the insistence on thin phones, are people not holding them? Do the thin edges not dig into their hands??

my ideal laptop format would be a thinkpad x220t with a thinner screen and maybe like 5mm shaved off the body thickness, other than that it's just.. optimal.. (especially being able to actually hold it by the battery, why would i not want to be able to use my laptop while standing?)
Again the thing that actually needs reducing is weight, shrink the internals to a single board and keep the chassis the same.

[–] LordAmplifier@pawb.social 1 points 1 hour ago

Wow, the X220t is a thick boi! I tend to agree that weight is a far more important factor than size. Carrying my old laptop around was a pain, I think it weighed around 2.5kg, maybe a bit more? Upgrading to a T480 felt insane. At the same time, I kind of get wanting a slim device. It's easier to fit them in a backpack (even with a protective case), and I'm glad my phone is relatively slim (8mm) because its case makes it significantly thicker. But yeah, this obsession with making things as thin as possible feels weird, especially because smartphones are now thin but have massive camera lenses that stick out

idk unfortunately i’m definitely in the group of people who is fine with a tiny bit of compromise for a bit of thinness, i’d rather have a slightly thinner laptop and a couple of adapters for ethernet/displayport etc

it’s when companies exclude ports when they clearly could have fit them that annoys me, like modern windows laptops without headphone jacks, or when laptops only have micro sd slots when a fullsize sd card reader is essential for using 95% of cameras made in the past like 15 years, probably motivated purely by cost cutting

i don’t use a macbook but a macbook pro with a charge port + 3x usb 4 + hdmi + sd is in my opinion almost the perfect compromise

[–] LordAmplifier@pawb.social 1 points 1 hour ago

You know what, that's a good point. Some people genuinely don't need an ethernet port and prefer a slightly thinner device that fits in their bag a little easier. I guess what I'm "upset" about is that it's becoming the default or even the only available option. And removing ports even though they could fit without making the device thicker is incredibly annoying, I agree

Margins on peripherals are much higher in comparison to the base unit.

[–] LordAmplifier@pawb.social 1 points 1 day ago

That's true, and something I've noticed, too. I just never connected the two things. Especially branded peripherals can be super expensive.

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

well now its all like that not only apple yeah

i have cardreader/hdmi/charge/jack three thunderbolt 4 ports

thunderbolt 4/3 is sosossosos insanely awesome ports, but helll 90% of shit still using usb-a ports

and still 3 ports is very small amount

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Maybe get a dock? Or smarter yet don't waste money on a mac and instead buy hardware with actual IO.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago
[–] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I found a really impressive AIO from Anker, if i needed it I'd buy it (link)

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Daaaamn… I have a nice setup I made for myself on each of my desks that does basically all of this, just lacking DP. It was much less money (50 bucks per setup or so, 80 if you count the power brick I suppose) but one single box for everything is really tempting. Thank you for sharing, I’ll keep this in mind!

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone -2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

pls dont send me overinfluenced shit, you can just send link not picture or not specifiend one product

yeah i like anker products, but there fcking problem is budget often they cost like 30-40$, me n my family got much poorer now, so even if i have macbook pro 2021 im poor now to buy things more than few dollars

this arm i was got OEM, by sortting much cheapest

also i got recently expensive headphones, so again i cant spend much on tech

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

If you're actually looking for a thunderbolt dock, search ebay. They're plentiful and cheap after COVID work from home jobs switched back to in office.

The hp g4 & g5 were the cheapest (35-40) when I was looking but Dell was close on a few models.

Only downside is that most enterprise gear won't have an HDMI port, only displayport

GOD I LOVE STUFFING HOLES FULL, I HAVE TO STUFF EVERY HOLE I SEE

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago

why everything is still 90% of time are usb-A, usb-c is so wonderful, aaaaaaaaaa

Ugh, I'm staring right down the barrel here.

I’m not downvoting you but I looooove my hubs! I got a MacBook Air, first Mac since… 16 years ago? I missed my nice plethora of ports on my old 15” pro, but now I wouldn’t give up the tiny-oscity of the lil guy for more ports. I was mortified at the cost of docks at first (a hundred moneys?! Insanity!) but I found some inexpensive docks with HDMI/USB C/USB A and used Dual Lock to mount them around the house. I made it a mission to make them as clean as possible and I think I did really well!

My home docks are plugged into nice 65W bricks and connect my laptop to power, monitor, keyboard/mouse 2.4GHz, Ethernet, and audio (split speakers and headphones.) It’s magical that one USB-C port can plug so many things in.

My to-go bag has my MagSafe thing, BT mouse, and some USB A-to-C adapters. Sometimes I’ll bring a lil dock. But I don’t find myself needing them very often!

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

well yeah, its meme post, i hate cheap hubs, but dont have money for good ones

thunderbolt 4 is insane, and very very fun to have dock to it

but i have few dollar "dock" and okay just four ports on one side, which is ethernet, headphones(i prefer todo it directly since seems like audio driver here is very good which can handle my high impedance headphones (its up to 1k ohms i have 260 ohms), charging importantly directly since i dont need usb killer from some hubs (macbook air have problems with it), and one is for any peripheria

well i need name post cable management sux rule !

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 2 points 20 hours ago

FYI starting in 2021 Mac’s started including high impedance 3.5mm jack

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Fair! My favorite headphones are all below 150ohms, so I luckily don’t need a separate DAC for them. If I did, I would absolutely need a better dock, or worse… Have to plug a second thing in! (My whole goal for my docking setups was to have a single USB-C cable connect as many things as possible, charge at 40w or more, and be as cheap as I can get them)

My actual docks have only got one HDMI port and a smattering of USB-A and USB-C—everything else is taken care of using adapters and splitters affixed to the side of the desks. They look really nice for how much of a mess they technically are!

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 20 hours ago

check upd post! there very nice setup

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago

fck hubs with bright leds

[–] anothercatgirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

framework is a bit better eh?

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago

framework good, but in my shithole is not officially available and only thru scammers with +200% overprice

[–] nimpnin@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

just get the USB-C to micro USB etc. cables and you won't need to worry about any of this

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

i trying to use that usually yeah, but there still not enough ports to put everything

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago

also one hub is using blue 2.0 ports ARWARWRARARWARR, and only one is 3.0(why dont use all 3.0 ARWARWRAR)

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why have you replied to your own post 5 times?

[–] erinmeow@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

well, three thunderbolt 4 ports is actually incredibly awesome

my grandma 2017(?) laptop, which i used some time too, have only TWO usb 2.0 ports, and only 3.0 type-c, other 2015 laptop have two 2.0 usb-a and only one usb 3.0

atleast there i have up to 40 gb/s thunderbolt 4, charging from any port, and displayport
