All it ever made me is fatter. Veggies ain't cheap.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 32 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Time to prep and cook is the most expensive part

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

Cook as if feeding an army. Freeze extra servings if you can. Saves me a lot of time both in cooking and the cleaning.

They are absurdly cheap and easily frozen. Probably the cheapest things in every grocery store.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, but depending on what you buy. If you stay regional, seasonal and somewhat on the boring side, veggies are incredibly cheap. Get a sack of potatoes, onions and carrots and you have a lot you can work with for relatively cheap.

[–] makeshift0546@lemmy.today 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Not really. I can walk in 85% of the grocery stores in the US and there is a ton of non regional shit for dirt cheap.

People are just lazy and/or tired and overworked.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, I think regional has a different meaning in our time. I meant from roughly the continent I'm currently at.

But even that isn't necessarily true. I guess I just want to buy regional because I don't want my vegetables to have traveled further than me just for nothing.

When I was piss broke I got fat as fuck. Cheap food is 99% insanely processed carbs. Fills ya up, but it absolutely destroys your body.

Pet peeve of mine nowadays when I hear someone give a low income person shit for being fat... "Hurr durr looks like they can afford to eat!" Fuck you!

Um... /rant lol.

Maybe he's born with it. Maybe it's poverty.

[–] gray@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

For me it was depression.

Side note: in general don't comment on peoples' bodies regardless of intention

[–] makeshift0546@lemmy.today 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I love people taking about my body. Don't make assumptions for everyone. Telling a friend they look great can be a huge confidence builder.

You look great, friend!

I mean I like comments on my body in a sex context, but not otherwise. So I just communicate that when relevant. I still stand by avoiding body comments in general, unless stated otherwise.

Mine is being chronically ill. With this miracle diet, you too, can become thin!*

*Side effects can include: looking like a cancer patient/skeleton/drug addict, losing hair, losing intestines, major depression, etc...

The fattest group of Americans are the poor.

Me crying trying to bulk with current groccery prices

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Peanut Butter is pretty cheap per calorie and is pretty low carb.

[–] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks George Washington Carver!

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yea it is and i do eat a fair amount of real peanut butter. I am chronically underweight and trying to build muscle so i need some extra carbs in my diet.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Chicken breast is good for bulking. But you probably know that.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Chicken breast is good. If it gets dry it can be hard to chew and get down. Been doing a lot of milk, ground beef, and rice. My biggest thing has been putting food in me every 2-3 hours. If i wait til I'm hungry I'm definitely behind.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Potatoes are another good option. The instant pouches are pretty good.

But honestly, what stopped me from being underweight was beer

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 1 points 3 weeks ago

Not exactly high protein.

For me it's the stress induced appetite loss. Got diet counseling at my well visit but Even the doc had to admit that my bmi staying >18 is more important than veggies. I'll absolutely murder some well seasoned veggies on a good day but some days I eat like 10 zebra cakes but nothing else because they're the only thing that spark my appetite enough to actually put in my mouth.

As a side note, I think the fitness peeps are right that ultimately weight loss / gain is Calories-In/Calories-Out but the part they're ignoring is stress-related appetite changes.

When my body is stressed my appetite just drops. It's not a conscious control thing like with an eating disorder I just get nauseous all the time and everything starts tasting like sand. I'm like one of those kids with cancer where the nurses just let them eat cake and ice cream and milkshakes all the time because it's the only way to keep calories going in. It doesn't make the weight loss healthy at all, in fact it's way more immediately dangerous than being overweight. Being overweight will kill you over the course of about a decade. If I accidentally drop 40lb again I could die this year. Some people just get an appetite increase when they're stressed and some don't or get the opposite and applying a moral judgment to that is insane.
