Mark my words, I will never buy a rockstar game again.

Everything about this stinks of greed, arrogance and forgetting that there is an end user in their business strategy.

Never again

[–] CriticalMiss@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The closer we get to release the less interested I become: it fucking sucks because GTA pretty much defined me, I played every r* game (yes even the table tennis) and I’ve had a lot of fun doing it. But now.. base game is $80 but if you want the full experience shell out $100, no PC release, no disc for consoles for those who wish to avoid the console ecosystem, paywalling ads, multiplayer not included (there’s a rumor we will have to shell out an additional 10-30 bucks for online). Fuck that. I knew they’d be greedy about it, after all it’s the biggest piece of entertainment in the history of entertainment but you don’t have to be a dick about it.

[–] lordziv@lemmy.nz 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

They will just do what they did with V and release the PC version a year later with multiplayer included for like $40-50 more.

[–] CriticalMiss@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Fuck that, I won’t buy it on PC unless it goes on a 75% sale. I’ve got a jailbroken PS5 and I’m very patient.

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I look forward to playing it for free.

[–] MIDItheKID@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The single player campaigns for the GTA games have been my favorite part anyway.

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I've literally never played multiplayer in any rockstar game. I get that's where all the hype is but I've never cared for a second. Their games have always been like Skyrim for me.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

GTA online is unplayable anyway. You can't get anything done because the moment you log in you immediately get blown up by a 12 year old flying a motorcycle with infinite rocket launchers around. In what way is that supposed to be a fun gaming experience?

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I look forward to still not playing it whenever it eventually is released.

[–] Bazoogle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

You don't have to look forward to that. We are enjoying it already. It's great not having to wait on Rockstar to enjoy not playing their games

[–] quarkquasar@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've played every GTA since release, and I gotta say, I'm probably not going to play 6 for at least a few years after release, if ever.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm waiting to hear how it is. Dan Houser and a lot of the other team members who lead the previous GTA games and RDR gave left Rockstar, so I don't have the confidence I had going into GTAIV and V and RDR2.

[–] quarkquasar@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh god. Well, that brought it from about a 20 percent chance down to about 2.

[–] Damarus@feddit.org 108 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Yeah this is scummy now, but firing a few dozen people in an attempt at union busting, crunch culture, artificial exclusivity so people pay twice, and ridiculous pricing for a video game is all okay. The paid early access to some marketing content is what clearly crosses the line. These people man

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago

It's baffling how people couldn't see that coming after all the crap Rockstar and Take2 pulled off with GTA Online, as well

The extended look will also be available at 9pm ET on YouTube, but for six hours, it will essentially be paywalled behind a Netflix subscription.

Um… ok

  1. Who cares? It’s a trailer.
  2. Most of the people complaining probably already have a Netflix subscription
  3. It’s 6 hours after you’ve already waited 4 years, chill out
  4. Someone’s going to rip it after 10 minutes away
  5. Vice City was the most fun, SA broke your childhood, IV had the best story, V had heists. There’s no way VI is going to top all those, we’ll be lucky if it makes top 3.

Peak capitalism: pay just to see an ad.

Okay hear me out.

This comes out on Netflix and then is on YouTube 6 hours later. 6 hours is a long fucking time on the internet. This video is going to be leaked instantly. It will be posted and shared everywhere minutes after it ends. Not just leaked but I'm sure you can go to any number of discord servers and watch somebody stream it. Rockstar doesn't care. Netflix doesn't care. The goal is not a pay walled advertisement.

It's a stress test of Netflix live streaming. They need something so big yet so inconsequential to test this with. If it goes well, they can say "Hey, we tested it out, and we are capabe of streaming the Superbowl". If it doesn't work. Eh, just release it to YouTube, whatever.

Thats my guess at least.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

6 hours is not a long time anywhere. If they told me GTA6 was coming out on PC 6 hours after the console release, I'd be stoked. Honestly, 6 hours of exclusivity is whatever. I'm actually buying a console for GTA6, that's how excited I am, and I could not care less.

[–] MIDItheKID@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Sorry, what I meant is "6 hours is a long time for something to not be 'leaked' on the internet"

As in - you will not need to wait 6 hours, because 6 hours is a long time on the internet.

You can expect to find uploads of the video minutes after it finishes.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Ahh, gotcha, yeah. That'll definitely happen. Idk if I'll bother looking for the leaks though, I'll probably just watch it when R* releases it so I can view it in HD and whatnot.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

It'll be at least a year until GTA 6 comes out on PC it always takes them forever to release on PC.

I was excited for the game but personally I don't trust them anymore.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Oh wow a 6 hour paywall for a first look of a game that's not out yet. Let's get mad about not being able to watch an ad for overpriced shit from a garbage company.

[–] HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's not really about being mad it's more just disappointment that this is where we are. Like shit think about how much this deal cost. It's just sad man.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Rockstar is a company that would be parodied in gta.

I plan to be one of the first ones in line to get my disc on launch day! Can't wait to finally pop that bad boy in and boot it up after all the hype!

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Putting out a pay walled ad is certainly a choice.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 37 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Until it's on sale on steam for 50% off, I don't need to know anything about it, thanks.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

50%? I would but it until at least 80% off

[–] phonics@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I'm waiting until it's free on epic

this game is going to be super ass and they're just milking the hype that's been surrounding the game now while they can. hope I'm wrong but I know I'm not

[–] wopalopa@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

there is no way gta 6 will live up to the hype. considering how abysmall western AAA industry right now

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The fact that they have already walled off content from the game unless you buy a deluxe edition should really tell everybody what this is going to be like.

I loved GTA. But I feel zero want for this. Same with battlefield. I was a huge fan. I have zero cares now. I'm much more excited for indie games.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I feel the same way too. I’ve loved GTA games and I’ve always been excited when a new one comes out. But with GTA6 the hype for me has significantly decreased. My concern now is that 6 will just be a reskin of 5 with a few extra bells and whistles added. I’m still gonna be optimistic about it but after 6 idk if I’m gonna get excited about the next one if it ever comes.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Oh my god who the hell cares?

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 21 points 2 days ago

They said as they preordered…

[–] charokol@lemmy.zip 21 points 2 days ago

This is the lamest controversy I’ve ever heard

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 20 points 2 days ago

Imagine torrenting a videogame trailer

[–] airbreather@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

I dunno, I think it's fine if a company wants to limit the reach of a marketing campaign for a few hours.

If someone chooses to pay Netflix more than they otherwise would so they can watch an advertisement earlier then everyone else, then that says much more about the viewer than it does about the companies involved.

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I played a used copy of GTA 5 for a few hours and then got bored and traded it for something else. Since used copies won’t be a thing for GTA 6, I’m sure there are other ways to get a copy to mess around with without wasting a lot of money on it.

[–] trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

I also really wouldn't get my hopes up that it's particularly different from GTA 5. The setting is still just realism, so they can't change much in terms of gameplay or art style, not even the storytelling can go too far off the rails.

The graphics and world simulation will likely be more, uh, realistic, but you'd really need to get a lot of enjoyment out of fine details for that to make much of a difference...
