More like 'carpet bombed a lot of bridges' repeatedly while condescending all the screaming.

[–] Sabata11792@ani.social 5 points 3 hours ago

Evil corpos purchasing creativity just to see the soul flee.

[–] CoolSouthpaw@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

That's right. Can't trust the legacy of Bill "Epstein Island" Gates to be a good company.

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

Microsoft has always been a law firm in a full body silicon merkin.

[–] SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

They also don't understand their customers.

But they do understand what they care about. Short term "Shareholder value"

[–] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 25 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Why did Microsoft buy all these studios if the plan was to never actually have them make anything?

I've been asking that since they bought Rare and proceeded to do nothing with them.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

It's just like destroying all the health pickups in a multiplayer game so the other team can't heal, I guess.

[–] belated_frog_pants@beehaw.org 1 points 1 hour ago

Looking for exclusivity of games to "beat" other companies. As always is their model of "force people to pay us" instead of "make something compelling". Its the Microsoft way.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Embrace, extend, and extinguish

[–] Jako302@feddit.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Thats something you use to stop competitors before they get big, but MS was never part of the game publisher circle and doesnt't seem to try either.

[–] Banzai51@midwest.social 3 points 5 hours ago

Fear of missing out. It is institutionally ingrained into Microsoft when they were publicly burned for "missing out on the internet."

[–] reka@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

my best guess is the people who signed off the purchases aren't the same people who evaluate the value of the things they have purchased

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago

For a long time, their value proposition was "use us because what else can you do?" Trying to monololize the gaming industry by buying up whatever good studios they can is just a part of that.

[–] CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They wanted to own existing IP. Not make new stuff. Buy an asset, milk it, and that'll do. Any words about long-term maybe were lies.

[–] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, but what's the point of owning the IP if you're not releasing any new media with it, or even re-releasing the old stuff.

It's not like we get a bunch of HD Collections out of it. Hell Activision's take on Wolfenstein hasn't even been re-released even though with Id and Activision owned by the same company there should be no issues.

[–] CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml 1 points 21 hours ago

Effort vs profitability to rework. Any content immediately releasable as part of gamepass was probably highest value to them.

Because it's run by fucking idiots with MBAs who have no connection whatsoever to the company's profits and losses.

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If you buy up all your potential competition, you have no competition.

[–] ReluctantlyZen@ani.social 1 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Bethesda and Activision-Blizzard were never competition though

[–] belated_frog_pants@beehaw.org 1 points 1 hour ago

It was about xbox and windows vs other consoles/steam etc

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Never know if they'd start doing exclusivity deals with Sony shrug

[–] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

I miss when Phil Spencer was talking about reviving Heroes of the Storm and Skylanders, he was never gonna do it, but I liked the hopium.

[–] FluidBeef@quokk.au 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Remember when Microsoft bought Rare and did basically nothing with them for two decades?

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not nothing. They remade a bunch of games worse than the originals.

(Some people did enjoy Viva Pinata, but I didn't play that.)

[–] content_educator_94@thelemmy.club 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Viva pinata was absolutely dope

Basically: The thing everyone worried about and quite frankly knew would happen when Microsoft started buying every studios they could get their hands on... happened.

Embrace. Expand. Extinguish. It never went away. Careless incompetence. The shareholders way.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 174 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Shareholders: "Wow, Microsoft is really expanding by buying up those studios, promising great output for them in the future!". Line goes up.

Microsoft then does nothing except investing all of their money into AI.

Shareholders: "Wow, Microsoft is really streamlining their organisation by dumping all of those useless dead weight studios. Excellent management". Line goes up.

[–] cabbagepatchcrabs@retrolemmy.com 81 points 2 days ago (5 children)

I absolutely hate how on the nose this is. sigh

Im not even sure the extinguish part is intentional here. I think they are just genuinely this incompetent, but Greys Law applies here imo.

Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.

Microsoft are the EA of yEAsterday

[–] krokodil2000@thelemmy.club 31 points 1 day ago (11 children)

MS shot itself in the foot: MS gutted the team, then the game didn't come out right and this resulted in bad sales.

Here are the Steam sales numbers:

[–] popcar2@piefed.ca 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

FYI Doom The Dark Ages was available day 1 on game pass and they were boasting on social media that they had over 3 million players on the first week if I remember right.

It's Microsoft's fault the game didn't sell. Most people (me included) opted to subscribe to game pass for a month instead.

[–] CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

Effectively it was a cost to increase and sustain subscriber numbers.

If they didn't gain more for the costs spent, they didn't have a viable marketing plan, or they did and it just failed horribly. Incompetence at the top.

All developers should refuse to develop for Microsoft. Starve them out

[–] alessandro@lemmy.ca 3 points 23 hours ago

The problem with employees and employed is that the thing goes the other way around.... unfortunately.

[–] woelkchen@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Yeah, this isn't news and the studio owners who can cash big checks to sell don't care.

[–] faintwhenfree@lemmus.org 23 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I have talked to a mobile game Dev, a very drunker heart to heart. He had an India mobile game (like alto). He made about 120k in 5 years between two versions of the game. And then some tenent adjacent studio offered him 650k for the IP.

In his words "All I could think was that in 650k, my house would be paid. My education loan would be paid and I would still have enough money to ensure my kid goes to college and not worry about an education loan. I knew selling game would mean enshittification of my baby. But then i looked at my actual baby and I knew I had to betray the digital one"

That's the first time I saw it from the dev point of view. He wanted to keep the project, but between choosing fans of his games that can't keep a subreddit alive and doing right by no name, no face fan base vs 650k hard cash from a shitty studio that would concretely secure his family's future. I am not sure if I would hold out.

I know it's not the same with the studio Microsoft bought..... But I can't help but wonder people who sellout might not be such horrible pieces of shit that we imagine them to be.

They also don't understand software.

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 3 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I can't imagine a company founded on its operating system, now deciding vibe coding that flagship product is a good idea... Especially vibe coding literally all of their software products... Dumb as shit.

Also everything they make is now a web browser shell with the app running inside which makes everything slow and memory hungry.

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 47 points 2 days ago

Or user privacy.

Or valuing their own workers.

Or how to respectfully be a part of the F/OSS ecosystem.

Or humanity's desire to not live in a pollution stream from their AI processing centers (they're not really "data centers").

Or that we all wish LinkedIn would self-destruct under the weight of its own bullshit, and magically blink itself out of existence.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 50 points 2 days ago (8 children)

You have to remember that the only person who ever really wanted Microsoft to get into console gaming was Bill Gates and this was largely an extension of his own love of video games and obsession with getting MS into the living room. Other efforts included things like WebTV, MSNBC, and a device that led to the creation of TiVo. Ballmer cared about Bill’s legacy but once the two of them were gone nobody was left who gave a rat’s ass about Xbox.

anyone who is hopeful about xbox's new leadership probably isn't terribly aware of microsoft's past. they've done this dance a million times. "we're improving!" -> people believe it yet again -> surprise, they found a way to suck even more now.
