I'm sure there are perfectly valid reasons for them to take full control of our discord accounts and this won't be abused.

Can you do all of those on a battle net account? I would, in good faith, presume the plan is for the battle net app to act as a pseudo discord app and let you control everything on your discord account through it.

PS: I searched very hard for that good faith.

Edit: Know what? Discord ain't exactly known for its ethical behaviour, so fuck em.

Right? This is Mussolini trying to get admin permissions on the third Reich. I don't have a dog in this one.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 week ago

The intent is almost strictly for WoW, discord is advertising that it's to allow for merging of WoW clan chat and discord messages, I would assume via the discord client which is why it asks for so many intents. Screw that regardless though.

Yeah, to me that sounds like what's going on. They're trying to implement a Discord client within their game, and to really do that successfully, it needs permissions to do all the Discord things.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 40 points 1 week ago

Some of these permissions I didn't even think was a possibility for discord integrations, holy cow.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

Damn, if they're going to get all that up into my account the least they could do is bake me a cake. The nerve.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I really just wanted a cake, but I guess that's the one thing it can't do.

I would do anything for battle dot net, but I won't do that

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (6 children)

I'm just disappointed that people are still on Discord after all their global age verification crap.

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

They never asked me to verify, so it doesn't seem mandatory

[–] DisasterTransport@startrek.website 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

They profiled you based on your activity and algorithmically decided you probably weren't a kid

What do you mean, this is to improve user experience!

[–] DeLancre@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

"Improving user experience" would be to not use any of those two apps.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Listen, Valve promised me a cake, and it turned out to be a lie.

Maybe this time [no cake] is the lie. I'm willing to bet a cake on the outcome

I actually really hate the bullshit fluff they add to the permissions request. It's not cute, permissions should be concise and clear.

[–] Godnroc@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (7 children)

I mean, it's trying to integrate itself into Discord at a high level, so much so that you can see if a friend is online to send them an invite or message without needing to open the app.

The only odd thing is to join servers in your behalf, but if you wanted to join a server without opening Discord directly, wouldn't it need that permission?

This doesn't seem that egregious, and the long list is quite informative of exactly what it can do.

[–] Ava@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Join servers on your behalf would be required to do something like "Join the World of Warcraft community server" or "join your guild's Discord server" buttons. Theoretically permanent links could work here, but Discord has made permanent linking harder to do for legitimate reasons, and it wouldn't work for smaller servers.

Email and third-party connections seem questionable. Why should Blizzard need to know my Discord account's email?

email would be to associate the account with an email. most services do this.

[–] too_high_for_this@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah, why is this even mildly infuriating? If anything, it's good to see transparency like this.

It's not saying the program will do any of those things without your input. It's just letting you know that your input in one program is using another programs data.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Doesn't rich presence already cover most of that without needing to handover this amount of perms to a third-party?

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 1 week ago

No, rich presence is some sort of status that any app can change and says "hey i am playing XYZ, i am in the lobby etc etc" can't do anything else

Man...

When Discord tightens the screws, it is going to be pain in a lot of communities.

Like, technically these permissions make sense now, but some day they will bite users in the butt.

[–] hellothere@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Til battle.net still exists and didn't die with wc3.

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

It's... The base app for all blizzard games, ofc it exists. I hate blizzard as much as the next guy but wow, the Diablo ripoffs, hearthstone and all the other crap is in there.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What are the third party connections? This could literally be anything.

[–] Ava@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

IIRC this means that the Battle.net app would be able to see the details of a connected Twitch account, for example. I think I've seen this used in certain situations for things like account management apps or in a few servers that want to verify the identity of people, e.g. creator communities.

[–] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

bake a cake

"we're so quirky guys!!!!1!1!!!1!!"

Same vibe

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

at least the cake isn't a lie this time

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 5 points 1 week ago

I'm happy not using blizzard or other Microsoft products.

I bet they'll try to buy discord soon.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Why are some of them duplicated?

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 13 points 1 week ago

the scrolling screenshot function on my phone is... imperfect

Not enough cake

[–] cosmos8188@leminal.space 1 points 1 week ago

Gotta water down the TOS list to the point where reading it will take a year. /s

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Discord malware needs fewer permissions than this /s

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Just wait until battle[.]net gets pwded

[–] SleepyPie@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Imagine continuing to play Blizzard games after all they’ve done. Some gamers really are cucks for nostalgia

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Youre getting downvoted but Blizzard really has gone into the shitter since... Uhh... Wrath of the Lich King? Maybe like 2 weeks into Overwatch?

At this point why won’t they just create an AI that mimics me across multiple social media platforms? If they’re stealing my data they should at least do the honors of posting for me

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 3 points 1 week ago

i actually exported my discord messages last year to do this for myself locally but it was too much effort

[–] Bluedragon012@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Internet 3 is growing hungry.
