Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

Okay, dumbass gen-X-er here. Why in the name of Zeus' butthole is there an app for any of these places? Let alone a compulsory one?

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (3 children)
  1. Brand recognition. Makes you more likely to patronize said brand if you are seeing their logo on your phone multiple times a day ... Likely hundreds. especially for iPhone where it's on the home screen

  2. Data collection and tracking . lots of these fuckers run in the background, calling home to report back what apps you have, your location, phone number etc. They're using this info to market to you more efficiently and to sell to others for profit. My wife had a shit ton these and her battery was dying faster than usual. Got rid of the bastards and battery life improved.

  3. Advertising. Direct. To you. If they have a deal or feel like you haven't opened the app enough, they send you notification spam. It's a corporations wet dream. Immediate visual direct to consumer advertising and they paid nothing to achieve it. You just simply gave your permission for them to do so

  4. If you're ordering via app, this opens up the possibility of giving others different prices depending on if they think you'll bite or accept it. This is much easier to do on an app or mobile site.. But impossible if you order in person

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 hours ago

But I hate all those things πŸ™ŽπŸ»

[–] solarspark@lemmy.ml 3 points 15 hours ago

Good news for me! it's precisely for these reasons (and there are more) that I won't ever get their apps, and that also means I'll avoid eating at these trashfood places

I'd like to take the moment to thank these corporations πŸ‘βœŠ

[–] kyonshi@dice.camp 2 points 19 hours ago

@DoucheBagMcSwag @dejected_warp_core they also get people to install them with vouchers and raffles.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I haven't been out to eat since the pandemic. And, the more I read about how much it's changed for the worse, including how ridiculously expensive it's become, I don't think I'll ever eat out again.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Whoa nellie.

I mean, I guess it depends on your area and such, but there still great places to eat out if the situation allows for it. Of course groceries are cheaper, but some places are still affordable.

I wouldn’t touch any of the comic’s chains though. I think I went to a McDonald’s once since the pandemic, for a quick breakfast while on the road, and it was indeed disproportionately expensive. But (as an example) taco Tuesday at Rosa’s Cafe is still reasonably priced here.

There's a major fast food place near my office that is 100% app-ordering only. They have locker lined up like PO boxes on the outer wall where you pick up your order, and you can't talk to anybody. They call it a "Digital Kitchen".

If I can do it from a website I wouldn't have a problem with it. It's the install/app permissions that would make me skip over ever going there

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

You're allowed to tell us the name of the fast food chain

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Not in this case. I'm already uncomfortably close to doxxing myself with my comment history, and that last detail would probably absolutely nail who I am.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Ah OK, that's fair

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

No, because doxxing.

[–] umbraroze@slrpnk.net 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Whenever I order stuff at McDonald's, it's been over a femtosecond since my last visit, so the app has logged itself out. So I always need to sit down and re-login. With mandatory 2 factor authentication. No TOTP, of course, it sends the code to email.

Welcome to McDonald's. Papers please.

[–] Sixseven@sh.itjust.works 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Can't you order from the in store screens or with a worker behind the counter? I haven't been to McDonalds in a few months though.

[–] BlackAura@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

I don't use the app myself but I believe it's the only way to get discounts / deals these days.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I know an even cheaper method.

[–] ramjambamalam@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 hours ago

Ah, the old drive-through interception – a classic!

[–] cdf12345@lemmy.zip 3 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Can we talk about the Taco Bell app that was updated last week and looks so absolutely vibe coded that it broke nearly everything and now it takes like 10x times to find or order anything because you get to see pictures of everything that take 45% of the screen real estate ?

[–] solarspark@lemmy.ml 1 points 15 hours ago

I love to see it.

I hope these companies who bit the slop absolutely bleed their money/marketshare because of this.

[–] pulsey@feddit.org 3 points 21 hours ago

Vibe coded by the CEO himself

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 2 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

McDonald is the only one that I’m aware of which won’t let you order without an app. For this reason I do not eat there.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

You can absolutely order at McDonalds without the app.

You cant buy McDonald's now without an app?!?! What?

Ive seen a McDonald's where they have touch screens inside and you need to use those, do you mean that as well? Those are gross too with the shared screen.

[–] Sprinks@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

You can 100% buy mcdonalds without an app. Not sure what OP is on about.

[–] kalpol@lemmy.ca 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

What like you can't walk in and order a burger without an app?

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 2 points 19 hours ago

I prefer to order ahead. It’s probably an anxiety thing, that’s all.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 11 points 1 day ago

Nope, nope, and nope. My fiance stopped going to Wendy's because she hated the AI voice. I still go there on occasion, all you have to do is say give me a human being. It is annoying having to wait for the McDonald's drive-through to ask me if I'm using the mobile app. They're just doing their job but it's seriously annoying.

Although I did make a comment to the teenager work in the register when I went to pay at Wendy's once because I drove past their slogan that said something about never cutting corners in service, which is hilarious seeing as using an AI menu board is literally cutting corners in service.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 1 points 20 hours ago

Makes it easier to eat healthy at this pace.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 44 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's not getting out of control at all. Just stop eating at these places.

I had no idea they even had apps, because I don't eat at these places.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They used to have good deals. I was able to order meals with deals and points to get a combo for a dollar. You used to be able to customize better too. I was able to put fresh diced jalapenos on my beef n cheddar.

Now the customization options are worse and the deals are worse. I hardly go anymore. Just not worth it. I can get a better deal at the sit down restaurants.

That's classic enshitefication. First it is good to hook you, then it gets slightly worse but you still use it out of habit, then it gets terrible and there is no other option.

Fast food serves zero purpose now. It’s not cheap and it’s not good. So why on earth would I ever install an app for any of these ghoulish companies?

That Burger king one is legit by me. They cut their staff so much they have 2 people cooking and one kiosk you can self order at that's broken half the time. Half the time you to to the drive through and they have a sign that says "app orders only." It's insane.

I doubt the person who drew this comic has had the misfortune of trying to order food in China. It's basically a literal form of what the comic is poking fun of, and it's ubiquitous.

In China, you can go up to the counter, but you cannot place an order. Sometimes, you cannot even read a physical menu. Not even so much as a menu on the screen. You have to scan the QR code using the Panopticon app (also known as WeChat) and then get bombarded with advertisements. Like us and get a free drink! Click here for a random coupon! Join our WeChat group! No, no, no, no. Then click through their garbage UI to find the one thing you actually want. Make sure you don't accidentally replace your order with one of their "recommendations" that pop up! Then, try to check out. Do you want to join our WeChat group for exclusive deals? Do you want to create an account? Dismiss, dismiss, dismiss.

Click here to pay. Only WeChat Pay is accepted. No cash, you backwards peon. Enter your mobile number here. Required to order. Ha ha, nice try, 123456789 is not your mobile number. No worries, we got it from WeChat. You'll get 3 order confirmation texts and 2 advertisements a week for the next six months.

jesus fucking christ.

Mfw the "communist" country that can do no wrong according to the tankie instances out-enshittifies the home country of enshittification and capitalism in general πŸ€¦πŸ»πŸ˜„

Meanwhile, the best baseball player in the world is Japanese, the number one ranked player in the NBA is Serbian, and they've even been overtaken as the most obese people by the citizenship-deprived residents of American Samoa!

If not for Handegg and money hoarding, the US would hardly be #1 at ANYTHING anymore!
