Honestly I’d rather this than deal with those smarmy fucks in the White House.

You can’t trust a word they say, as evidenced by literally everything these last 10 years.

I’m done with the US. I don’t care anymore. They’re the most self centred egotistical people on the planet, and I hope that as a country they can learn how their new favourite pastime of ruining friendships and relationships damages themselves the most. But they’re a nation run by abusers and takers, with no concept of mutual benefit anymore.

It’s sad, and difficult, and painful. But that’s what an abusive relationship is.

We treated each other as brothers not very long ago. Though that’s hard to imagine with today’s discourse.

Somehow equating Trumps own personal trade war beef with Canada and the average American person’s opinion of Canada as if every American individual is personally causing this is really nonsensical. Literally no one is out there advocating for starting shit with Canada. The president’s supporters support him, they don’t actually care what it is that he does, nor if he changes his mind 5 times this week. Everyone who isnt stupid enough to blindly support him doesnt want any of this to be happening.

So tell me again how this is an issue between Canadians and the actual American population?

They elected him TWICE.

Until it's proven that they rigged the voting machines or something, this is what Americans as a whole asked for.

I get that's not 100% of Americans, but for the rest of my life I cannot trust that Americans won't rip up any deal and try to do whatever the fuck they want to my country. I know lots of decent good hearted Americans, but the voters and the US government are the problem, and I don't see how this relationship can ever go back. Over 10 years is a long fucking time to have been dealing with this shit and it's quickly getting worse and worse.

Every nation gets the government it deserves.

-Joseph de Maistre

Lol twice. They musta done something bad in a past life as a nation or something.

As a Canadian, I completely understand that. And I 100% sympathize with the American population that does not support him. However, in a country where a “leader” who is “democratically” elected becomes the figurehead of that country, it becomes very difficult to separate “him” from the American population. In the world’s eyes, “him” is the U.S.A. So, when we see “him” wanting to make Canada the 51st state, “him” thinking he is entitled to Greenland, “him” trying to cripple Cuba, “him” deciding Americans should be in charge of the Strait of Hormuz, it’s kinda’ hard to look at the US and say, “yah, but that’s not the American people, that’s just “him”… Unfortunately for you, He IS the American people. You have my sympathies.

They elected him twice, and no one in Senate or Congress is trying to stop him, least of all the Democrats.

Democrats are now so useless they have replaced the word useless. "This BMW turn signal is Democrat."

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca -1 points 1 week ago

no one in Senate or Congress is trying to stop him

By that logic, a legless frog lacks the motivation to jump; and it's entirely the frog's fault.

Gotcha.

That how elections work… actions meet consequences.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

They voted him in. They let him abuse his power. Trump is just showing how rotten America is.

[–] West_of_West@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

Americans elected an anti-Canadian government. And so, this is an American population that is anti-Canada. It is a simple as that.

I have american coworkers, they are very self centered I got mine types during all this. Its been an eye opener. When trump threatened Canada one guy put up an american flag in his zoom meetings. Like read the room idiot.

I was terrified with what I heard the Liberals were ready to fold on to get a deal. I am beyond happy we are in a situation of walking away. There is nothing to gain caving on anything anymore. The US will not follow through on their agreements anyway. Give them nothing.

I think we need to focus on hard divesting from the US and focusing on our sovereignty. Cut out Microsoft, Oracle and Google from government use. Ban Facebook for its constant criminal behaviour. Remove all our data from US located or US owned datacenters. Slam Amazon on its appalling labour practices. Make Netflix pay into our culture like all media providers.

Have our laws and values respected on our soil. No more soft ball to American corporations.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The data has to off of American company data centers. Just having the data in Canada is not good enough.

[–] TeaWithDani@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Exactly, the Cloud Act is a threat to everyone's privacy and national security.

This is a better deal.

Given that they were, according to Leblanc, verbally agreeing to things and then writing down that we agreed to something completely different, and then reopening those points to push even more.

This is a much better deal.

You'd think that Trump would learn by now that this hurts American citizens more than Canadians but eh, maybe in the next life I guess

[–] OldCrow@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

Trump doesn’t care if it hurts Americans. Trump only cares about his whining whims being met. He’s at best a narcissist, and most probably a psychopath.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

You'd think that Trump would learn by now that this hurts American citizens

The flaw in that line of thinking is rhat Teump doesn't actually care if the American people are being hurt or not.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not true though. Companies look for cheaper alternative so they can make more profit. They'll charge the same and blame tariffs but it still hurts Canada.

like all the potash they can now buy from friendly Iran… oh wait
