Trump and his oligarch friends do not give a wit about the working class, in fact resent us. They would rather work us to death like slaves at a sugar cane plantation than treat us with decency even if the latter is more profitable to them.

This is why in the US labor unions have had to claw all of the worker treatment regulations that existed (and are no longer enforced) in the workplace, from the weekend and forty-hour work week to safe working conditions.

Since it's easier for the owner class to bust unions than it is for workers to form them, civilization might just be screwed until we figure out how to universally teach class consciousness.

The reason Massie is calling this out is because he is getting the necessary signatures for a discharge petition (a process that allows a bill to get to the floor for a vote despite a Speaker's blockade) going for the Epstein Files Transparency Act II, but Mike "I Protect Presidential Pedos" Johnson can't actually let it come to the floor for a full vote because votes are public.

So Mike Johnson is keeping Congress out until the day after the midterms because he can't let his delicate snowflakes go on record as either voting for EFTA II (which will make Trump very angry) or voting against it (which will make sentient beings with active consciences very angry).

It's that simple. Yeah, Massie's a Republican. But he's literally trying to do the right thing here, and it's working so well that Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, is choosing to fucking shut down Congress than let a vote on EFTA II come to the floor.

Yes. This shutdown of Congress really is all about protecting a pedo. This is not hyperbole. It is actually happening.

Massie’s a Republican. But he’s literally trying to do the right thing here

That's honestly so shocking I wonder what alterior motive he has.

That’s honestly so shocking I wonder what alterior motive he has.

Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna led the bipartisan effort to get EFTA I passed in 2025; in retaliation, Trump did everything in his power to get Massie primaried this year and succeeded, so now Massie is a lame duck with an even bigger grudge against Trump. Massie can do whatever he wants now, without fear of losing his already lost seat, until January when his replacement gets sworn in . . . IF Congress is allowed to come to work by Mike Johnson. Cue the long vacation.

Massie is also, depending on who you believe, also responsible for Mitch's long unexplained absence: there are those who maintain the reason for absolute silence on McConnell's absence is because had the Senate vacancy been confirmed, Massie -- also from Kentucky, and also newly available because he'd recently lost his primary -- would have grabbed it in a special election. (As McConnell declined to run for re-election, his seat will be filled in November's regular election anyway.)

I'm not a fan of Republicans or Republican policies, but this is a rare one who is refusing to march in lockstep on the subject of Epstein. I don't doubt he has a shitty record on unions and/or work reforms, all Rs do. But he's one of only four Republicans with a spine who crossed the aisle to get EFTA I passed. This long Congressional break Massie is highlighting above, posted by OP, is a specific and direct result of Mike Johnson doing whatever he can to stop EFTA II from coming to a vote, not just run-of-the-mill Republican rich boy posturing.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He's ok, the last ok Republican

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 22 hours ago

Oh no. Massie is scary as fuck when you look at his policies and voting record. He just believed the MAGA flavor aid stuff, such as exposing all the elites in the Epstein files.

As with all of Trump's prior cronies, Trump commands absolute loyalty but returns none, and so when Trump's policies change, well, US was at war with Iran; therefore US had always been at war with Iran.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (3 children)

His motive is to gain name recognition so that he can win votes in the future. Massie will say whatever he can to be elected in the future and this community is falling for it by amplifying his voice.

Check out his score card throughout the years: he's not our friend: https://aflcio.org/scorecard/legislators/thomas-massie

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Who gives a shit? If he gets votes for putting Trump in jail, I’d say he earned them.

Someone has to do it, and while I wish it was someone better leading the effort, 🤷‍♂️

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

While that may be true he is also trying to reveal some of the greatest crimes on the planet. I can appreciate an unlikely and uneasy alliance if it means bringing pedophiles in power to justice. Although the story about The Scorpion and the Frog comes to mind.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The AFL-CIO says last year he voted on the side of workers 42% of the time, where the average Republican did so only 1% of the time. Fuck yeah I'm going to support this guy who represents a solid red district in Kentucky. The alternative would be someone who toes the party line and gets a score of 1%

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He supported all this btw. 😂🤣😂

[–] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No "btw" about it. Massie DID support Trump. Massie also DID legitimately and tangibly act to support the victims of Jeffrey Epstein not just once, but throughout his term -- and Trump DID fuck him up the ass for it, openly working to primary his seat out from under him.

You got a lot of laughy faces for something that isn't funny, given that many innocent people have died because of this administration. At least Massie's using his learned lesson to do something good. What are you doing?

As for me, the enemy of my enemy tends to be my friend. It's not that hard to hold conflicting views about one person for most of us. I'm not shocked so much by your response as by your position; your inability to handle nuance and/or people that are not easily divisible into black and white/good or evil figures is not uncommon, just far more readily found among the locked-step Republicans you decry.

But this thing where you run around a thread screeching at anyone who doesn't wholly reject one bad guy doing good things doesn't get you fans. It gets you blocked. But I'm guessing you with your fourteen day old account already know that quite well.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

LMFAO HOLY SHIT YOU LOVE DEFENDING PEOPLE THAT HELPED ELECT TRUMP.

[–] yesman@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

It's a myth that Congress gets this many days off. They work very hard begging for money and making promises.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What fucking timeline is this where I agree with thomas fucking massie?

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago

I think this is what happens when you remove Republican incentives to lie, of which there are a lot. Most of their policies will still be bad, but almost everybody has a good side to them.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world -5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's hilarious because it's upvoted in a community that supports work reform. Yet they upvote the tweet of someone who has voted against their every interest. Ah to be so simple!

[–] Artisian@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It seems one can agree with a person on one issue and not others. Fortunately Lemmy attention isn't very valuable, so we don't have to pretend that upvotes here are deteriorating the fabric of society in quite the way they did on reddit.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Remember that part of the project is to destroy any trust that existed in the other branches of government prior to trump. In support of "unitary executive theory", essentially an American monarchy led by an untouchable king.

Already done with the supreme court and well on its way in congress, with the decade plus of GOP obstruction since 2010 especially.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Sociopathic Oligarchs are getting really pissed of that we've decided not to work so hard for them. If my efforts don't benefit ME, and only benefits THEM, then I'm not going to bother. I'll just work for myself.

[–] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 5 points 1 day ago

Sure, I could work harder. But that requires a higher salary...

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

You don't understand, the MAGAs are SWIMMING in money like Scrooge McDuck, and they know the party is about to end. Once they lose control of Congress, much of the flow from the Sociopathic Oligarchs will divert to the Socialists. So they're going to party like it's 1999 on all that campaign cash, going to expensive dinners, staying in expensive hotels, flying on private planes, etc.

You can't possibly have all that fun, er, do all that work, while being constantly hassled in the Capitol Building. They have to get back to their home districts, and AVOID their constituents.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Technically speaking, there is more to being a member of Congress than being in Congress and debating/voting. There is a lot they do for local constituents.

That said, a lot of what they do is certainly fundraising… of various kinds. And running for office. So I'm not saying the claims are totally false by any means. But it's not quite as bad as that makes it look. Only mostly as bad or so.

[–] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

I used to beat this drum pretty hard until I learned/realized just this week that ostensibly this is so representatives can spend time amongst the people they represent.

Obviously there's no strict laws governing what they do with their time and they are only accountable to re-elections for that, so the potential for slacking off is tremendous, especially in the age of R vs. D being virtually the only thing worth mentioning come election time.

"Sure, I'm never in DC working for you and I'm never back home listening to you, but at least I'm not a filthy [other party]!" is a convincing argument for a staggering percentage of American voters.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Yeah, we know, dipshit. Calling it out doesn't actually do anything.

[–] Deconceptualist@leminal.space 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I suspect a whole lot of people don't know this.

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This plus he lost his seat by standing up to the pedo turd with his support to have the Epstein Files released, so I guess that bought him some goodwill. And whoever Diaper Donny got to replace him with will not just be republican, but inner death cult loyal to dear leader.

That last part is what people don’t understand about why you can’t get rid of him with elections anymore. The parasite took over half of the us political spectrum.

[–] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yep. Massie is specifically calling this out because of the Epstein files: Johnson can't let the house remain in session long enough for Massie to get a vote on EFTA II.

THE HERO THIS COMMUNITY NEEDS!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Massie being the closest thing to a decent person in the GOP wasn't an accolade.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago

Serious question. What are they supposed to be doing in the meantime?

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world -4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

If you plan to upvote this post or did upvote it already I just want to provide context on Thomas Massie and why you shouldn't:

He is not a friend of the working class! https://aflcio.org/scorecard/legislators/thomas-massie

Over the past 10+ years he has continually and consistently voted against worker rights in multiple aspects.

He now got booted out of his party so he will say whatever he can to try and get votes in the future. Remember, he can say all this stuff but when it comes to votes, he will vote against your interest. Amplifying his cute tweets will cause more harm than good for the worker.

Thomas Massie should not be considered a friend or ally of Work Reform! Downvote this post, we have plenty of politicians we should be posting on here that actually vote for workers when it actually counts!

[–] BrilliantantTurd4361@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thats not the intention of up/down voting.
