/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

If only to remind ourselves to breathe in our advanced age.

One of the reasons The Prodigy holds up so we'll is that the synth guy refused to copy/paste basic background loops.

If a beat pattern is repeated 40 times, he manually entered it 40 times into the software.

This to avoid lazily repeating basic loops for longer than they were pleasing to listen to, and force himself to think about every detail about the music he wrote.

Hey thank you for sharing that story. I'm about to sit down for an extended arrangement session in a couple weeks and, uh, I have arranged two songs before. It's going to be rough. But that is great songwriting advice.

[–] Rusty@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

I'm glad that I've been to their concert after the reunion and before Keith Kirked.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 18 points 3 weeks ago

Fuck, I didn't read that slow enough at first and was like, "well I mean, Smooth Criminal is pretty old so- wait the Alien Ant Farm version????? Fuuuuu-" I think that made it worse.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Last week a teenage store clerk asked if I needed my purchases carried to my car.

I didn't, because the question caused me to crumble to dusk.

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

Sorry to hear that you’re reaching your sunset years.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

"need? Nah. You want a break from bagging and a quick chat I'm up for it if you are. Grab an empty bag and if anyone asks you're carrying it for me" then give them double finger guns

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

That's not surprising at all. Any media older than 20 years is old.

In fact, watching Star Trek TNG is the equivalent of watching black and white movies.

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 14 points 3 weeks ago

Well no, because if you watch late 80s Star Trek now, that's only the equivalent of of watching oh my fucking god you're actually right.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It’s true! A lot of people think that anything that existed before they were born is ancient, and then they post on the internet about how 30 Rock is all 20 years old and shit, and — 😢💀

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 4 points 3 weeks ago

It is "seasoned"😋

Just reminded me of Captain EO.

[–] ashenone@lemmy.ml 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

A few years ago my Bluetooth thingy died and I had to listen to the radio so I turned on the oldies station trying to catch some beach boys or something and they were playing Guns N Roses. Marjor psychic damage. Then they got the crit multiplier cause when I switched to classic rock they were playing the Sex Pistols

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

So where do you go to listen to beach boys?

[–] ashenone@lemmy.ml 11 points 3 weeks ago

/home/music/BeachBoys

[–] gigaqps@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Reddit. They're everywhere.

Ohh, beach boys

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

RIP Tim Curry

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I don't even know if we have an "Oldies" station left, but I heard a Linkin Park song from 2003 on the biggest Classic Rock station in the area last week, and I'm still trying to process that.

Also, obligatory "there was only 13 years between the original and the Alien Ant Farm cover, but 25 years since the cover"

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's been years ago now, but I knew I was old when we were further away from Lagwagon's cover of Brown Eyed Girl than they were from the original.

Is this tales from the crypt?

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Close enough. It's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Meanwhile here I am in my 40s sometimes getting carded when buying booze and I look em straight in the eyes and point to my grey beard, then ask if they wanna see my thinning hair 👴

[–] gigaqps@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

I get carded whenever there's a young kid at the till. I just give it to them because I know their boss has given them shit about it

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Got carded at a bar for the first time in years. Just hoping they didn't see me blush through the grey in my beard.

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 weeks ago

Wait you don't get a bit happy they felt to card you? I need to go to newer stores for that excitement.

Actually recall being over a decade younger and being carded and amused, doesn't happen overly often this side of 40 let alone back when I was younger. Apparently I looked a tad younger from comments (at parties unless they were just hitting on me, I dunno now) but rarely card for decades now. Always have it ready just to make things smoother mind you, don't want to hold up the line and all

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I was so happy when I stopped getting carded in my late twenties. I didn't need to carry my wallet around with me anymore just to show ID when I pick up booze. made it that much easier to go run errands, as I only needed my phone in my pocket

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Now I just need my government ID for out of state travel and to make cannabis purchases. Everything else I need or want to do is doable without an ID.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

For me it was when they played “Sell Out” in the grocery store.

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You know you’re old when you start singing along to the music while grocery shopping. I was ashamed when I caught myself.

If i remember correctly they ended up hating it because people didn't ask for their songs when they were playing live just the Smooth Criminal.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Better than Greta Van Fleet, who denounced that they sounded like Zeppelin. Dude, take the compliment and run with it.

[–] negativenull@piefed.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You mean the band that 100% sounds like Led Zeppelin (on purpose) is offended that someone thinks they sound like Led Zeppelin?

Also, they got offended by that?

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 weeks ago

Fun fact, Dryden from AAF is a documented racist and bigot. He was called out in the NME (or maybe MM, I forget) at the height of their fame by a journalist who followed them on tour and saw him frequently using racial slurs to refer to members of the road crew. Then when social media started being a thing, he was on there with (subsequently deleted) N-words and homophobia.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 3 weeks ago

Omg so many hilarious offshoots tho.

Star Wars live action emperor

Family Guy (much better production quality on this one!!)

And I am even told that Michael Jackson himself may have done a spin-off!1! That sounds so cool, I gotta go find it!!
