Dont worry, theyll get a bailout and youll be on the hook for everything. Privitize the gains, socialize the losses

If the economy crashes we are the ones who are gonna be fucked... I don't think I can afford a 5090 before or after.

I am fascinated that people think if only the economy crashes everything will be back to normal. No, we are all fucked. The billionaires have already fucked us all.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 day ago

Its like how people think they will be able to by a house if there is a housing market crash like corporations won’t still be the highest bidders.

Just gotta wait for the strategic oil reserves to run out while diaperman keeps closing the strait, and it'll be a big ol' happy happy

[–] LordKitsuna@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

While it is true that they are at their lowest levels in a long time, the reality is that between domestic production that we have available and the reserves, even if our usage continued to grow, we still have a few years worth before we would actually genuinely run out.

I'm not an economist but I don't think that's how that works.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 9 points 1 day ago (3 children)

If the economy crashes, there's a chance the chip fabs go under, especially if they're holding the trillions in debt hot potato.

[–] traxex@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 hours ago

If the economy crashes we are all going to be looking for new jobs.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Eh, they're sitting on tons of cash. Nvidia, AMD and the AI companies may pass debt around, but TSMC is being paid money for their services. RAM and NAND companies, too, made record profits last year.

They're expanding, but conservatively.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

If the economy crashes the tech sector goes with it - which you can bet would be paying for this person's 5090.

[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why give the company at the epicenter of the coming financial crash your money?

This is like hoping for the sub-prime market to crash so that you can afford a Bear-Stearns home loan at a favourable interest rate.

Do you really? This bugger is loud as fuck and eats the sun for breakfast, energy-wise. In hind sight, a 5080 would've done equally fine minus some fps.

[–] Jinarched@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Why? Are you cold? There are better ways to start a fire.

[–] pewpew@feddit.it 3 points 1 day ago

My GTX 1060 has to hang on a little longer...

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah ehh, I know it’s a meme but maybe say 5070 or even a 5080

Just buy 2x 3000s /s

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

You don't need this.

[–] termus@beehaw.org 3 points 1 day ago

I'm so happy I bought a 4090 and 64GB of RAM in 2023. This shit is ridiculous.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I will be shocked if computer parts, aren't, right now, the most affordable they are ever likely to be for the rest of your life.

[–] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

Prices will fall once China builds enough capacity. So maybe around 2030.

[–] left_is_best@feddit.online 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My pet conspiracy theory is they're trying to take compute power away from the proletariat so it can't be used against them in the coming AI wars.

[–] grranibal@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I also believe they want to take our compute power BUT I think they just want to turn it subscription based (e.g. cloud gaming)

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They kinda missed the boat on that one. We passed the point of diminishing returns in graphics hardware years ago and now the only reason to get a high-end card is conspicuous consumption.

[–] grranibal@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Poor corporations, they were too slow ;-; /s

If I understood correctly you’re saying that the hardware is not improving that fast, right? I had no idea that was the case

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

More that games already look good enough that the improvements from better hardware are getting harder and harder to notice.

[–] grranibal@lemmy.zip 1 points 9 hours ago

But from what I’ve heard (at least one year ago) modern games still have the latest hardware listed as recommended

I was going to grab a 9070 XT, but I also wanted to start mainly using a local LLM instead of contributing to data center use, so I snagged a used 7900 XTX for $750 off eBay for the greater VRAM capacity. Works like a charm, and the local Qwen model is performing great. Totally worth it. It's my first Radeon card because I wanted to dodge the ridiculous Nvidia AI markups, but it's already showing signs of running better with my Linux machine, so I don't expect I'll be going back to the green menace.

[–] trebach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

I managed to grab a 9070 XT earlier this year for $630 bundled with a 750W power supply. I guess the bundle was to deter scalpers from buying it.

AMD GPUs are going to run better on Linux than NVidia because the drivers are in the kernel. You have to install the NVidia proprietary drivers separately if they're even available because they don't support that many models. Linus himself gave NVidia the finger for being so hard to work with.

But millions of virtual waifus and half-hearted vibe-coded projects on GitHub will die!

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's what the 5090 is for. Excellent for running local LLMs.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 2 points 1 day ago

Better get two so that there's enough power for the v-girl to give live commentary on the gameplay.

[–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 day ago

That's a sacrifice I want to make right now!

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 day ago

I don't need a 5090 though. My 2070 is still going alright, don't really see a reason to replace it right now.

[–] apprehensivecrab1@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’m out of the loop. What is a 5090?

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I can't help but think someone who doesn't know what a 5090 is would be helped with the letters GPU.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, they can now search "5090 GPU" instead of just a number and see themselves what a 5090 is, if someone managed to use lemmy, they can manage to use a search engine

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Tbf they could already just search 5090 and likely get relevant results, the number isn't that popular in other contexts. I opened a new private browsing session and the first two results for just "5090" were nvidia and a local electronics retailer (I used google, it gives you results by country by default)

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah ofc but with such generic wording you cannot be sure to get the right thing, it happens to me way too often, 2 words is the minimum to get decent results for most searches

[–] grranibal@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

It helped me a lot :D

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

i thought a 5090 was another version of 5150 but til
