Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Amazingly, the answer to #5 is yes!

    So just like #2 then

    ducks and runs away

    [–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Depends on use case. If Ubuntu is what you yourself like best? Then yeah totally.

    [–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If you want a stable system that just works, that doesn't require tinkering and closely monitoring updates, and those are your only two choices? Yeah, Ubuntu is a much better choice than Arch.

I have tried it and its not bad either.

    [–] HairyHarry@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I installed WSL, to install Ubuntu, to install Hackintosh, so I could VNC my self into it on my work laptop for testing apps on it.

    So yeah, not bad.

    [–] valkyre09@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hold up. You’ve virtualised Mac OS via WSL? That’s pretty bad ass

    [–] HairyHarry@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Wouldn't call it bad ass. It was just a bit weird installing a bad OS on a nice OS on an evil OS.

Also, there are good instructions online to achieve this.

    Is Proton a Debian-based distro?

Why use Wine? All it does is emulate Windows.

    WSL invalidates Linux's existence.

Linus is the Colonel of Linux.

    [–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 40 points 2 weeks ago

Linus is the Colonel of Linux.

    Love it

How to piss off a Linux guy in 3 steps:

    Step 1: Use Windows

Step 2: Encounter a computer problem and ask the Linux guy for a solution.

Step 3: When they say they don't know Windows, mock them for being so stupid despite staying in the terminal playing pretend hackerman all day.

    1. Terrible choice, but if it works for you...
    2. For some use-cases, sure.
    3. wine program.exe
    4. "Then what have I been playing Pong on all this time?"
    5. It is, actually. WSL isn't "proper" Linux, but it's there!
    6. Yeah, imagine...

"I'm also into linux, so I got a chromebook"

    [–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 13 points 2 weeks ago

I did get a chromebook ... and then I put Linux on it.

(Not bad for a $0.50 purchase.)

    [–] kaidenshi@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, ChromeOS is immutable Gentoo, so yeah.

    No love for YYYY-MM-DD?

If you see a date in that format, it's pretty unambiguous.

Ugh you don't need to write 30 million lines of code to install a browser. You need to compile 30 million lines of code to install a browser. πŸ™„

    [–] tordenflesk@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

You get to compile 30 million lines of code to install a browser. :)

#5 is actually true. Install Ubuntu for WSL from the Windows store. WSL is great BTW

1- No, Windows 11 mains you

2- Yes, ubuntu is much larger than arch

3- We have many ways to install anything

4- No, but neither does Windows, who at Microsoft is troubleshooting your games?

5- Yes! But Windows works much better on linux than linux does on Windows

6- Imagine 30 million lines to fix your last update

    [–] 0x0@infosec.pub 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

4- hey windows actually has a useless troubleshooting wizard, and when cortana gets good enough they might just revive clippy

    [–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

I miss Clippy. Sure he was obnoxious, but you could tell him to fuck off and he would listen.

For three, say "command prompt" instead.

In fairness, several major distros are available on the Microsoft store.

You forgot: "Why do you have to recompile the kernel all the time?"

    [–] grue@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Recompiling the kernel is a privilege, not an obligation!

    [–] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

How awesome is Windows? I mean the way it runs so smooth…you can like process a lot of processing with the processor. Like if they added AI to the ESC key, that would really be awesome.

    [–] weps@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

    7 I tried Linux. It didn't work.

    [–] archchan@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago

    Fuck you. Take my upvote.
