Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The state’s attorney says the penalties should be significant enough to impact the company.

If the state of New Mexico has its way, Meta will have to pay up to $40 billion in penalties after a jury sided with the government in its lawsuit over the Cambridge Analytica scandal. According to Reuters, state authorities have asked a judge to order the company to pay between $35 billion and $40 billion. If you'll recall, New Mexico filed the lawsuit against Meta in 2021, accusing it of misleading its users about its data privacy practices. Cambridge Analytica, a British political data firm, harvested information from over 50 million Facebook profiles without consent for political ad campaigns.

In late September, a New Mexico jury sided with the state. Jurors ruled that Meta had violated New Mexico's Unfair Practices Act and had misled residents about their privacy, as well as on how the company handles misinformation. Under the jury's verdict, the state could ask for as much as $219 billion. Yes, that's billion with a B. The jurors had examined 29 statements the company had made on issues involving the case and found 26 of them misleading. Based on the number of Facebook users in New Mexico who were the audience of those statements, the juror had found that Meta had committed 43 million violations of the state's consumer protection laws.

It should be 40 billion per state. It should be enough to run these companies right out of business. Which means it won't happen.

When you owe the people $100B it's your problem.

When you own the people $10T it's the people's problem.

It is. This is for just one state (New Mexico).

While true... 48 other states already settled the Cambridge Analytica stuff for $18B total. The only State left that didn't join that original group is Florida.

So there is no chance of them actually paying anywhere near a correct amount for the issue.

Cambridge analytica was the blueprint for this entire operation. I'm glad someone is at least talking about it.

Should be $40 billion, disgorgement, then disembowlment, then death sentence for all the fuckers responsible for it and actually running it

Is prison never possible?

[–] ToiletFlushShowerScream@piefed.world 14 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

That's just for New Mexico right?

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 7 points 23 hours ago

Yep. The law violated was in NM. It's uncertain how this applies to other US states, or the rest of the world. I'm sure Meta lawyers would say each state and the rest of the world are all separate cases, and will fight tooth and nail in each of those cases.

Money aside, the publicity and legal precedent will also harm them.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 6 points 23 hours ago

Let's not set that money aside until it's been paid. And yes, let's make certain that the publicity is spread far and wide. Why? Because fuck Meta Fascism, and fuck all corporate interference in democracy. And let's use the legal precedence to rein in and dismantle Meta, and other corporate fascists.

Fuck'em up! Fines can't just be the price of doing business, they have to PUNISH, so they change behavior.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I think they should double that, at least.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Even 80B would just be 'cost of doing business'. The market Cap is 1.87T!! That is 1,870B. 80B/1870B = 0.04 or 4 percent. Pocket change. If you had a car worth $1870, and your mechanic said it's gonna cost $80 to fix it you would just shell out the $$. right?!?
