If it was any other administration, this wouldn't feel like a metaphor

[–] Illogicalbit@lemmy.world 24 points 6 days ago

You succinctly put into words what I felt deeply when reading the headline.

[–] Successful_Try543@feddit.org 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Aptly, it's going to be sunk in the "Gulf of Mexico".
Nice to see that not all US-American news goes along with the orange guys nonsense.

The SS Unites States. It has electrolytes.

Can we rename it the TrunpShip and invite him for a cruise, and accept a peace prize?

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 6 days ago

I wouldn’t put it past them to rename this at the last minute for a new stupid headline

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

TrunpShip

No. "np" is difficult to pronounce. :P

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 20 points 6 days ago

Misread. Thought the American-SS was about to sink the state of Florida. That didn't seem right, since that's like their headquarters.

[–] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Trump will order it renamed it to the SS Liberal or some other stupid shit before it sinks.

Jokes aside, this is sad. SS United States is a tremendous part of maritime history, and because of money, we literally have to destroy it. May as well have scrapped it back in the day and spat in the faces of those who tried to save it.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Honestly, that's a pretty solid prediction. I guess we'll see what happens.

I always admired her beauty when she was docked in Philadelphia for years. Very cool ship to see when walking out of Walmart.

She also has a great history. It’s quite sad (and very understandable) nobody bought her to refurb and turn her into a museum. She was for sale for $1 for as long as I can remember. Of course, the real cost is much much more with docking fees, needing to tow her anywhere.

[–] limelight79@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And it was stripped inside, basically just a shell and bare decks. The cost to make it a useful venue of any kind was astronomical. It's sad.

I'm worried about the NS Savannah. It is a nuclear powered civilian vessel, combination cargo and passengers, built under Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace effort. The reactor has been removed, and she's docked in Baltimore. The caretakers are desperately looking for a place to take her as a museum ship. (I did the tour a year or two ago, it's really interesting.)

[–] Marins_Ballad@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Oh wow. She sits among a sea of ROROs in Baltimore.

[–] limelight79@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Yeah and right next to one of the few remaining Liberty Ships, the SS John W Brown.

When we visited the Savannah, the Dali (the ship that hit the Key Bridge and triggered its collapse) was anchored at the dock next to it. So I got a few pictures of that. And the missing bridge. :(

At first glance I parsed this as United States will finally sink Florida

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

or Florida finally sinks into the ocean. we know all about the rising sea levels, and hurricanes that florida seems to want to ignore. but the mouse's property will stay afloat.

SS United States is a retired American ocean liner that was built during 1950 and 1951 for United States Lines. She is the largest ocean liner to be entirely constructed in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic Ocean in either direction, earning the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952, a title that remains uncontested.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Over the years, the then-stewards tried to find ways to give that ship a new lease in life, anywhere from refurbishing and powering it up again for cruise to a floating hotel/casino, but to no avail as -- except for a few enthusiasts -- no one cared about its reputation of being the fastest and then-modern ocean liner on the planet until they were forced to sink it after failing to pay for docking, and only then mainstream attention got focused again.

Huge waste of resources. 53,000 Tons of steel and aluminum that could have been recycled.

[–] syreus@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It'll make a neat reef and dive location. Also ship breaking is costly and dangerous.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca -1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

But America has the right to dump 53,000 tons of rotting metal into the Gulf? You think they will remove toxic substances from that wreck?

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 3 points 4 days ago

Artificial reefs are a thing. There is plenty to be outraged about but this ain't it.

[–] _deleted_@aussie.zone 4 points 6 days ago

I think the United States is already sunk.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Nice to see the Florida panhandle in news that's not something terrible. heh

[–] socphoenix@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I mean this is possibly bad for their marine environment unless they’re very careful…which yeah given this administration I’m sure it’ll be fine

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Nah. these ships provide good areas for marine life.

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 0 points 4 days ago

The AS United States will besunk in the Golf of America. Let that one sink in.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

the irony. so heavy it will forever rest in the Florida Keys.

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 0 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

After the midterms so... Just like actual united states?
