Speaking at a campaign rally in Kansas, Trump said the reporting made Marshall, who is not Jewish, out to be “some kind of a shylock-type guy,” using a term widely recognized as offensive toward Jewish people.

You just gotta grab 'em by the slur, when you're rich they let you do it.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 33 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Surprisingly literate for Trump. Unsurprisingly offensive. But at least he was only antisemitic and not critical of Israel's policies.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 13 points 4 days ago

Surprisingly literate for Trump.

Not really, that's definitely an old person slur. I'd be surprised if someone in their 20s used it, but not surprised at all for an octogenarian.

I always thought "shylock" was a Jewish slang term for a private detective.

No idea why or where it came from, but I'm glad I've never felt the need to use it.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Shylock is a fictional character in William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice. A Venetian Jewish moneylender, Shylock is the play's principal villain. Wikipedia

Apparently (from reading the Wikipedia entry) Elizabethan england was quite antisemitic and it was common to portray Jews with particularly offensive stereotypes.

So it's always been a slur.

It may have been an association with "Sherlock" made by my childhood brain that I never had the need to use or question for decades.

Better late than never, I suppose.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 days ago

Hah! Yeah. That an entirely plausible innocent childhood association.

[–] Asidonhopo@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Growing up my only exposure to the term was this 90s comic strip in the newspaper

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I thought it was Matlock’s twin except with a mustache

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Shylock, not Sherlock. 😉

[–] _chris@lemmy.world 28 points 4 days ago

He also raped kids. Maybe that should still be news.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 38 points 4 days ago

Yeah, but it's not like he protested Palestinians getting murdered or anything.

We all know not being sufficiently pro-Israel is the real antisemitism.

[–] kn33@lemmy.world 36 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Huh. Ya know, it's been a good long while since I've learned of a slur that I hadn't heard before.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 4 days ago

I learned about this slur the last time Trump said it at a rally.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 8 points 4 days ago

If there's a slur you haven't heard of before, you can count on Trump to teach it to you!

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's kind of one of those old-timey ones. I think I'd hear old farts saying that one was I was real little and my parents just told me it was thought of as antisemitic at that time (this was the 1970s). I remember a teacher explaining the same thing in sixth grade, IIRC. The old farts I'd hear saying that one, would be the same types that would not think twice about saying how someone "jewed them down" on a price negotiation. It's one thing not to know the Shylock connection, but using Jew as a verb is quite another.

They'd also say things like someone "gypped" them, but that one stuck around for a lot longer in mixed company, JFC. I think part of the reason is that there are very few Gypsies in the USA and a lot of people honestly didn't really make the connection between that term and the people.

[–] Fredselfish@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

Jewed down slur my best friend used all the time and he Was a Jew. Don't think he talk that way around his mother. But for him he didn't see it as a slur. To him he was proud when he could use his Jew powers to get better price on an item.

Sad he is gone, but glad he doesn't have to live in this shit world now. Not only was he Jewish he also was disabled and lived on disability.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Now is a good time to start reading more Shakespeare. The Merchant of Venice is actually pretty good.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 10 points 4 days ago

Shocking surprise. A racist no one will do anything about says a racist thing no one will do anything about. Want until they find out he raped children!

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 21 points 4 days ago

Donald Trump said we SHOULDNT bomb Children? Oh he said we SHOULDNT Snipe babies in the face? OH he must have said something SUPER ANTI SEMETIC like Genocide is Bad?

Oh he used a Slur? THATS ok! -LITERALLY AIPAC!

As long as you are pro terrorist state of Israel, you are fine

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

If I used a slur in a professional setting, I'd be in trouble

'Fat fascist fucktard that people actually elected as leader, said and/or did another crass and disgusting thing'

Repeat every day. This isn't news it's a fait accompli at this stage.

[–] Ingiald@feddit.nl 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It has indeed been tiring to read a slight variation of basically the same headline so often.

Just so you know, it's actually fait accompli deriving from french, meaning an accomplished fact. Or maybe that was autocorrect on your end.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Yes it was autocorrect, but I've manual'd it now

[–] santa@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

Says the ganef.

[–] nednobbins@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They're using the ADLs definition of antisemitism.

They call everything antisemitic.

[–] moldy_rice@piefed.keyboardvagabond.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I don't think that's the problem. The problem is that they equate antizionism with antisemitism.

[–] nednobbins@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

They use the IHRA definition of antisemitism. It's broader than just antizionism.

If the Israeli Leader was blackmailing me because of all my secret pedophilia I'd be anti-Semitic too!! /s
