Sites with closed captions are a challenge to find; I've managed for a bit, and I found great ones.

However, now I'm trying to watch a show called Tokyo Vice where open subtitles aren't working, and I have to find Nova ones.

However, sites that have them don't work 99% of the time for this show; I've tried hundreds.

The frustration of not being able to watch a show and chill before bed is huge; this show I quoted isn't even available in my country.

So yeah... This was my rant.

So this might get some flag but I have hat some luck running a 100% local AI model to do this. Generating subtitles for movies or shows where I could not find any at all or know someone willing enough to translate the whole thing.

I'm gonna give you flak, but only for calling it flag :)

Finding a use case for AI? Believe it or not, straight to prison

I did a python script using whisper that create an srt file with any movie you pass on. Results are not super good, but is watchable. Also if you have a very good video card, you can use another model, I'm using here medium.en with an 8gb rtx5060 Here:

You wanna tell the rest of the class which model? Because I have had recommendations but they were more theoretical than actually vouched by someone running their local model. Whisper is supposed to be good for English and the free AI online will recommend it, but as soon as you scratch a bit you'll learn about better models for other languages (Chinese, in my case).

When I get back home I take a look, it is a bit ago. But it was not hard to do in the end with docker and a nvidia 3090.

Care to elaborate? I'm not a huge fan of AI, but in f it works well for subtitles, I'll happily try it out

I’m not a huge fan of calculators but if it works well for multiplication I’ll happily try it out.

Have you tried the FastStream web browser extension? Among its features is subtitle search for a stream you're watching.

https://github.com/Andrews54757/FastStream

I've even used it on legit sites that already had subtitles, to find some with a better translation.

That add-on looks so good, but the hoops I gotta jump on Firefox are a bit too much

[–] klu9@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

I installed it over a year ago, didn't realize it had become so difficult now in Firefox.

Might be worth having a "single-purpose install" of a Chrome-based browser like Helium just for watching streaming video.

Stremio has it from all the typical release groups with an array of subtitle options, so it should be readily available as a torrent as well.

I only watch an episode every 1-2 days, and I don't consider a paid VPN worth for torrent this little, neither I wanna torrent without one in this age.

After like 3-4 nights I spent trying different sites rather than watching, I'm considering just going without closed captions even if I don't understand everything.

Totally sucks if you ask me, it's getting a challenge to be a pirate lately

You can use stremio with http addons (that's what I actually do) https://stremio-addons.net/addons?categories=http+streams&sort=popular

Is learning a language and enjoyment of your show not worth $1-2 a month? How are these dodgy sites safer to rawdog than Usenet or torrents?

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

Torrents expose you to uploading risk unless unless you turbo leech I guess.

Users if the dodgy sites aren’t on the radar of the media companies in the same way torrent downloaders are.

Some players can shift timing of the subtitles. Then you can just adjust timing of any subtitles with correct framerate. You can even adjust the framerate. Once you learn how to do it, it's fast and simple.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

If you're willing to set up Stremio, Torbox is only $3 a month for its cheapest plan with API access.

[–] Fleppensteijn@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Lookmovie2.to has a large selection of subtitles
