I definitely find it hilarious how intensely the EU and Canada are diplomatically flirting with each other. I'm all for it, but let's hurry up and set up some more dates and maybe start some more conversation of our future.

The fact that it took so long is stupid.

The first time Putin tried to start playing oil and gas prices in Europe, the EU should have paid for Energy East pipelines and started buying stuff from Canada.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca -4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not really, everyone is acting like Canada has something to sell EU they already don't make.

Oil, gas, minerals, potash.

We played critical parts in NASA robotics and in US stealth tech.

Hell, Israel just bought one of the best robot sub companies from being Canadian.

Well, this summit seems to be a big "step one," and they seem to have a pretty aggressive timeline over the next year. I guess we'll see.

That sounds like second base 😍

Now I have that song stuck in my head.

it's all just a veiled threat to get CUSMA signed. Once that happens, Carney will drop EU like Justin Trudeau's wife dropped him.

You mean the free trade treaty that trump negotiated and is in current violation of?

[–] Undearius@lemmy.ca 19 points 3 days ago

2016 - "If Trump gets voted in, I'm moving to Canada"

2024 - "If Trump gets voted in, Canada's moving to Europe"

Hopefully they lobby for us to reform our electoral system.

How much closer to membership? Regulatory harmonization? Common market? Euro currency? Schengen? I'm guessing that's unlikely, but I'm very interested in what's actually on the table.

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

From what I've seen, defence agreements, common defence procurements (including adding Canada to the SAFE program), improving trade infrastructure (ports and rail). We already have a trade deal ofc.

Common market, euro and Schengen are definitely not on the table now. Lots of countries would scream bloody murder if that was offered without having to go through the membership process.

This is so cool. I love that we're getting closer with Europe. We border France after all, we should be friends.

I don't know if membership will benefit us overall, but our stronger bond with the EU is great to see!

[–] Blibittyblah@futurology.today 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

All the benefit with none of the commitment!

[–] Akuchimoya@startrek.website 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

... Is Canada getting the Brexit that was promised but never materialized?

[–] altasshet@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

More like Canada could try to pull a Switzerland with bilateral agreements... Although I didn't think the EU would fall for that again.

Just fucking do it already you babies!
