I've been very hyperfixated on my model railroad recently. I got halfway decent at woodworking, pretty good with a drill and some brackets and wood and right now I'm building soldering and electronics skills. I've also been doing some locomotive repairs and getting pretty good disassembling, diagnosing and repairing them!

Most recently I've been focused on electronics and building a nice collection of components. I'm strongly considering spinning up a side gig selling some pre-made circuits that for whatever reason just arent available right now despite being fairly desirable and fairly simple to solder up if you're willing to do a bit of reading and warm up the soldering iron

I have been self-hosting Zusam for sharing photos of kids with the family. After a bit of a chat with the dev I forked the web app and started smashing in new features and customising it to work more how I want it to work, to be my vision instead of his. It's a heavier webapp than Zusam's very light one but it works well I reckon. It just sits over Zusam kind of like how alternate UIs work in Lemmy.

That's been my determined focus the last week or so, but I'm probably about to stop for 6 months because that's how I roll.

Woodworking. Physical activity, relaxing, and can save money.

[–] stillwater@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

It's like doing engineering without having to deal with other people.

[–] maxthemummer@lemmus.org 1 points 1 hour ago

Woodworking is great for doing something alone and unlike say, golf, no one else wants to talk to you about it, so you're spared a lot of unsolicited opinions on how you're doing it wrong.

I just started sewing and it feels like a thing I could devote all my time and energy to

Does anyone want to get into a long ass discussion about either Battletech or Naval History?

Mycology, shibari rope, and music theory

I've gotten back into the original nerdy interest: reading! Right now, I'm reading The Three Musketeers, and it is so much more entertaining than sitting around and scrolling.

Getting more into the BSDs.

I have OpenBSD as a desktop on a laptop I have and it's great.

Also wanting to get back into retrocomputing.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 2 points 3 hours ago

If it only was a bit more power efficient I'd use it on my old laptop. FreeBSD was a bit better, but still not quite there.

Computers! After ~15 years as a professional software developer, I have gotten so burnt out, but this week I had so much fun coding for myself. I made a website: sloptrough.art, its not much but it's very gratifying to have hosted it on my own hardware with raw html & JavaScript. I'm using proxmox, a hypervisor, to run OpenBSD which is running apache server. As OSs go, OpenBSD is paradoxically complex and unintuitive (command-line first, by enthusiasts for enthusiasts) yet also user-friendly and approachable (there are breadcrumbs down a path of well-written manual pages; I haven't had to google at all).

Also, woodworking: i turned a pallet into garden storage to help clean up the patio

[–] sinza@piefed.social 2 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, I describe OpenBSD as very easy... for those already who are already quite familiar with Unix.

Very nice for setting up quick servers.

[–] epicshepich@programming.dev 5 points 9 hours ago

I did a rewrite of my personal website either earlier this year or last year, and it was so addicting! I couldn't stop working on it.

[–] Unlix86@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 10 hours ago

I daily drove OpenBSD for a bit and it was amazing :3 Am on Gentoo now tho :3

I'm playing around with some lidar data obtained from shuttle missions. The visualisations of landscapes are dope.

[–] riverdoc@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Qgis has a great plugin for turning DEMs into 3d printable STL objects! If you play around with the vertical exaggeration, depending on how much elevation change the terrain has, you can print some AMAZING things!

If you can get yourself a cheap 3d printer this is an excellent add-on to your hobby :)

[–] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 1 points 1 hour ago

Yeah, I had been thinking about something like that.

The options are endless really.

Looking at the visualisations stimulates some kind of spatial awareness part of my brain. Like when you look at a map with roads you momentarily try to place yourself. With out roads that feeling is kind of extended and deepened.

Unexplainable really.

I mean, I've been super hyped about Avatar Seven Havens since I first heard about it. So I am kinda impatiently waiting for the final episodes of book 1.

I personally love the fact that they added India tones to the show to really give off a more distinct vibe from the previous 2 shows in the series. Also really like the art style and music choice. Story has me pumped to see how they manage to keep things going. Especially as we very slowly learn about Korra.

Spoilers Ahead! Click At Your Own Peril!I also like that throughout the season up until episode 8/9 they avoid having am Amon or fire lord or some other known overarching villain who is seen as a major threat to everyone who is a big focus of the season. No big evil bad person to have to deal with by the end of a season, which feels refreshing. As much as I enjoy Korra, that's one thing that kinda drags it down just a little for me, so I hope they don't screw that up.

Good choice to have Nisha run out of the Haven, IMO, so they can hopefully focus less on the Faceless and their queen being this books Amon. As much as I kinda wanna see them being taken down, I think something much more interesting would be seeing them throughout the books travel to the other Havens and recruit benders and ultimately have them all end up traveling to Republic Forest in the end... only to realize it's not as safe as they thought. Only to end up meeting Nisha and Pavi and realize that the Avatar is their last hope and their freedom.

As various people have pointed out in comments on reaction videos I've seen, Agam having been hinted throughout the season as the Faceless queen is a nice touch. I personally never expected for a single moment that she could have been their leader, let alone a bender herself. Always fun to have characters sneakily set up to be a surprise villain!

So yeah, I'm kinda invested in the show, if you couldn't already tell.

[–] epicshepich@programming.dev 4 points 9 hours ago

I've been watching it with my kids, and I've been thoroughly enjoying it! Being half Indian myself, it's definitely cool to see more representation than just Guru Pathik (though I did love him)

Reticulum/Nomad net.

Reticulum is a network that can run over regular internet, bare WiFi, long range radio, even a serial cable. No central server, secure by default, works on slow/unreliable lines.

NomadNet is an app that runs on it that is reminiscent of the pre-netscape internet days. Text sites, no javascript. If you dig in deep enough, you can make your own games/chat bots/host offline Wikipedia and display images using ascii style art or even half tone text blocks.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I've gotten really into MeshCore with my local mesh and radio nerds. We have a network that is able to send messages over 300 miles away.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

yeah, i live in a hole with no one owning anything higher than our houses. Neighbors have no interest. I have no LOS to anything but them.

Really want to get to the kids school which is less than a mile, but RLOS is a no-go. two people own high ground in the middle.

No water towers, just power company and cell phone and those are two placed i don't wish to fuck with.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 10 hours ago

Not answering the question but I feel its more about simple things than nerdy things. Things that do not have large cost or to hard to get. The exception being when the chase is what gives the enjoyment like collecting.

[–] mlfh@lm.mlfh.org 14 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Right now it's knitting and electronics - working on a deep blue shawl with sparkling beads in the pattern of a star chart, and wiring and coding up a pair of motion-reactive light-up pole dancing heels for my wife, fun stuff ❤️

[–] WatermelonPaloma@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

I would love to see both of those projects when they're finished, both sound so awesome!

[–] Eudaimonia@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Linux and Beatmaking. Finally just me and my PC again! Love it!

[–] hoshikarakitaridia@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Oh damn that's awesome. Which DAW do you use?

[–] Eudaimonia@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

LMMS of course :))

Audio fx envelopes (not the sustain/decay kinds or whatever)

What if you could aurally watch something change from one thing to the parametric opposite over time?

Those big wooden jigsaw puzzles with intricate little pieces. Lets me get away from all the screens for a while

[–] LeftReddit2@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

Gaming. Went back and 100%ed a few games like Neon White, Exit 8, Omori, and Space Marine and my god did it feel good. I think this is what got me out of my depressive episode/alcoholism. Hopefully this time I won't relapse.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 4 points 15 hours ago

Emulation. I set up ShadPS4 on my Linux machine and i've been playing around with that. I've also been playing with RPCS3. Also fuck AI, but it's cool finally being able to play P.T. on my PC. I don't like vibe coding but there's something poetic about folks using AI tools from a billion dollar company to decompile and port games made by another billion dollar company.

Whilst not "Nerdy", I had to make a spreadsheet of my DVD collection as I have too many to remember 🤣 I'm just shy of 400, possibly closer as some are boxsets.

I've purchased a few doubles before I made it.

[–] Olap@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Is there such a thing as 'finishing' the dvd collection I wonder? How many were released? What constitutes a release? When was the last one released? When was the first?

[–] Browse8474@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Space constraints will "finish" my collection unless I purchase a big DVD wallet to compress the collection 🥲. I class releases as different regions, if they're director cuts and sometimes if the old first releases of that movie have scenes still in them.

Home Alone 2 is one I think of instantly, They used trump tower for the hotel lobby and he just had to be in the movie for them to be allowed to film there. It's been cut out in later releases, sometimes it's added as an extra.

I got angry about a really poorly designed website, so now I'm learning web development to try to make a better one, and show how easily it could be improved.

I'll likely fail at this task, but the learning is fun and never wasted.

Rc cars! Wroom wroom! Found my ancient rc car I had as a child and have started taking it apart and assembling it again, while slowly getting into the hobby again.
