I was thinking of shellac. Comes from beetles. It's also used in edible waxes, like what apples are coated in,, IIRC.
Simply handling raw chicken should convince anyone of this.

Once or twice a year, yes. Any more than that, no.
The same ingredient used in candy corn is also used in paint and nail polish.
