Do americans actually do math with imperial system at school? That must be a nightmare and have conversion errors between units.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

It's obvious that there's 1760 yards in a mile.

There's 22 yards in a chain, which we can all remember because of the 22 yard line in rugby.

There are 10 chains in a furlong, which fans of metric can't complain about.

There are 8 furlongs in a mile, just like there are 8 pints in a gallon.

And 22x10x8 = 11x10x16 and 11 is easy to multiply by in your head, so it's really very simple to get to 1760.

this but unironically.

Sigh, I'm going to get downvoted to hell for this, I'm sure. After a 16 year career as a machinist in the US and having to easily change between both systems daily, one system is dozenal and fractional and one is decimal based. Dozenal and fractional are both easier and faster when you start thinking that way. A mile isn't 1760 yards precisely, it's 5,280 feet. 5,280 / 12 = 440. It's dozenal. All units, and I mean all units are arbitrary. Someone just decided x means y. Whether it's "this amount of silicon atoms is 1kg" or "this specific length of barley corn is 1 inch" - they're both defined by a decision that someone (or a group) just kinda made.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 6 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

both easier and faster when you start thinking that way.

Let me translate: "This system is easier because I am more used to it".

I can assure you there is nothing difficult about decimals if you are used to them.

[–] night_petal@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

No, I'm incredibly used to both, and that's my point.

[–] Equinox1289@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

I kinda want a hexadecimal version of the metric system.

[–] MyRumIsVodka@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

In hex:

10 mm = 1cm
100cm = 1m
1000m = 1km
1km - 1m = FFFm = 0.FFFkm

Still works fine.

[–] dismay3915@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Measurement system doesn't have anything to do with numerical base. You can use any base with any system.

16m = Fm

which is pretty ass if you ask me

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

Americans choose to meassure thier dicks with the thumb of a british king instead of using meters... or GIGAmeters... there are no right awnsers, right?

[–] DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

1,000 kilometres = 1 megametre

[–] 3laws@lemmy.world 0 points 4 hours ago

0.01 Petameters

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 10 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

My contrarian brain:

  • 1 inch = 1 cm
  • 1 yard = 1 meter
  • 1 mile = 1 km
[–] TownhouseGloryHole@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

This is upsetting

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 17 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Uh, no.

10 feet = 1 decafoot

100 centiyards = 1 yard

1x10^18 attoacres = 1 acre

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I’m gonna start estimating distances in millimiles.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 hours ago

1 millimile ~ 5 feet, 3 and 23/64 inches.

makes perfect sense.

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 hours ago

This would be acceptable

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 39 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

It only seems ridiculous because you forgot some intermediates: 5.5 yards = 1 rod, 4 rods = 1 chain, 10 chain = 1 furlong, and 8 furlong = 1 mile. So just gotta remember 12, 3, 5.5, 4, 10, 8. Super simple.

[–] damnthefilibuster@lemmy.world 17 points 12 hours ago (4 children)

Rod? Chain? What is this bdsm?

[–] OriginEnergySux@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago

Don't make me math

Frankly you shouldn't even be using prefixes anyway. SI units are kg, m, and s and if you need to refer to large or small units, you just use scientific notation. e.g. 5.6 × 10²¹m

[–] MyRumIsVodka@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 hours ago

Prefixes are more succinct, while still being as unambiguous as scientific notation. (Plus it's trivial to convert from one to another.)

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

I mean the yard and pound have been defined by metric for a long time so it's really just an indirect metric system so the USs feelings don't get hurt.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 18 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Sir, this is a Wendy's, we measure in common units around here...

[–] Deme@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 hours ago

Good thing the EU has an SI-unit alternative...

[–] milbyte11@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Do we need to post the same shit all the time on a biweekly cycle? Surely there is something actually interesting to post/talk about.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

This comment is the most exciting thing I've read on Lemmy all year long! I can't wait to talk about something else! Whoopeee! Yay!

Yeah, after learning Japanese in 3 different writing systems, one of which has thousands of characters... I'm never hearing criticism of Imperial units again

[–] DigDoug@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

If you consider hiragana and katakana to be different writing systems, then English lower and upper case letters are two different writing systems, too.

Not that it makes Kanji any easier to learn.
