Never seen a clearer example of someone not being objective.

[–] HughJanus@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago

Sure, but I don't dedicate 12 hours/day for 9 years learning to become a doctor "for fun".

Learning to ride a bike does not contribute anything to anyone but yourself so you're not making a great argument here...

It is true. It obviously doesn't make you invincible 🤦. That money doesn't vanish when you die. It just gets redistributed.

What is it exactly that you think money is? Just fancy paper?

No one goes to school for fun except for rich old people. People go to school to get money.

we're just not so stupid as to accepts the horrible conditions you have in the US of A.

The "horrible conditions" where we don't have our money taken at gunpoint and given to people who contribute nothing to society? Yeah, it's awful. Don't come here. Please don't come here.

I don't expect an American to understand this straight away - nor to be smart, to be honest

Ditto.

You seem to be under the illusion that time actually represents tangible capital

Yes, that is literally how that works. You've never heard the phrase "time is money"? That's what that means. Money is nothing but a physical (or digital) representation of someone else's time.

You'll spend those 4 years alive anyway, right? Then you may freely use it to acquire education.

LOL what? Did you actually read that before sending it?

"Hey, why not join an internment camp!? After all, you'll be alive for 4 years anyway, right?"

...or you could use it to do things you actually want to do?

if you're too poor to sustain your costs of living, be it because a part time job doesn't pay enough or because your family lacks the funds, you can apply to receive free money from the state for the duration of your degree

God I'm just so jealous that you guys have all this free money falling from the skies. I assume all of your work is completed by a legion of robots in this utopia?

It's not free. It's taxpayer-funded.

And the 4 years of their life? Is that free?

[–] HughJanus@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago (10 children)

And the obvious reply is "I don't care how much you enjoy it, no one wants to spend 6 hours/day at school for 4 years and spend $40k+ without expecting something in return".

I think the question to ask is:

"Why would anyone spend the time and money I did to go to school and become an expert of their craft when they can flip burgers for the same pay?"

[–] HughJanus@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

There are several "new YouTube"s. The problem is getting people to transition to them. And this is intended to do exactly that.

That's the exact opposite of what most people want from an app like this.

[–] HughJanus@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago

"open source" is a self explanatory phrase. The source code is open, therefore it's open source.

I see a lot of people saying "but that's how creators get paid"

And they're not wrong. But they put themselves in this position when they uploaded their videos to servers owned by one of the worst corporations in the world, with massive privacy implications, and no alternatives.

I watch them on other platforms when they make it available.

Tried to use OSMAnd last week to navigate around on vacation. For some reason it seems to be incapable of searching for house numbers, which is an instant dealbreaker. I'm very confused as to how or why this is a thing on such a mature product.

I was able to share a location from GMaps WV over to it to get navigation working, and from there the navigation was awesome!

Currently also testing Magic Earth and Organic Maps but I'm very interested to hear from those with more experience.

P2P network with no servers. Added "communities" with Facebook-like posts (my preference). Looks cool but it's missing a lot of details and it seems like there's almost no one using it at the moment, despite feeling very polished.
