It really depends on what an outing looks like for you. Are you out all day and moving around a lot? Are you largely staying in one spot with not much of a hike?
Unless you use something with active heating, warm comes at a cost to bulk. Fingerless mitten/glove combos are a decent compromise but that's a jack of all trades, master of none situation.
When I'm hiking around I prefer my thin ~2mm wool gloves with touchcreen fabric on the index/thumb. If I'm staying in one spot I prefer to throw hand warmers inside big mittens and stuff those in my front pockets and have full use of my hands for a few seconds etc.
