A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

Before anyone judges me, yes I am a dumb 19 year old who has watched too much Andrew Tate and all the other self improvement gurus talk about being rich. This has lead me down to a very confusing hole.

Anyhow, can you actually make Millions off a photography business? If so how?

I have 4 years of experience and now I am on the search for a photography job for the time being.

I for the most part have been using photography as a tool to make connections with wealthy people. I want to own nice cars, so what do I do? I go up to people who have them and ask for a photo shoot so that they have a reason to talk to me.

This genuinely can ever get me so far. But man its been confusing me for a while.

As I am still learning and I just started to do this connections thing I am wondering if anyone here has a similar problem to me? 😅

i think you’re issue isn’t how to make a million. the problem is the people and voices you’ve let influence you.

i guarantee that mindset is going to make for a very difficult, shallow, unsatisfactory life. trust me.

[–] TyBoogie@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Millions? Maybe not. But depending on your market, skill level, and more importantly your confidence level- you can make a good living.

I started 4 years ago and I’m doing very well. The thing is, photography led me into video work so I I do both and comfortable where I am.

[–] bleach1969@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Sorry but the reason i’m a photographer is that i want to produce great images and be a creative person. Wanting nice cars is fine but they’re not the reason you want to get into photography.

[–] BadPronunciation@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

If you want millions you there are many boring business opportunities available. Your soul will be drained but your bank accounts will be full

[–] TotalWarspammer@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Sorry but the reason i’m a photographer is that i want to produce great images and be a creative person.

Yeah, I'm sure you would be really happy being poor as hell from being a photographer as long as your creative side was well nourished.

Andrew Tate is not there to help you with his "advice." You listening to him is how he is getting rich. There is a reas

[–] ballrus_walsack@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Uh oh, candlejack is in this threa—

[–] Upyourasshoesay@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Absolutely not. Don’t be fooled by YouTube videos kid.

[–] piszkavas@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Never believe any of those "gurus"

YOu can be rich yeah, but that is with constant effort of being the best and the most purpose oriented.

[–] yor4k@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Maybe take that AUD80k (if that’s true) and invest it instead of blowing it on a car which is a depreciating asset.

[–] kennypd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Maybe. I'll have to see

[–] Mekemu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Well he's following guys like Tate. So I'd assume that smart decision aren't high on his priority list. He should invest in his education. Thats what he should do with 19 years.

[–] hungryforitalianfood@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

80k on education is probably the worst use of that money.

[–] Mekemu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean if he has limited cognitive abilities the 80K will help him ;)

[–] kennypd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think I understand how bad the internet is now

[–] hungryforitalianfood@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You should start understanding how good it is. With specific exceptions, there is almost nothing you cannot learn online. More efficiently and at your pace. A huge number of teaching styles.

The key is that experience is always more valuable than passing a class.

[–] apidelie@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Andrew Tate, the guy who was arrested for rape and human trafficking? Yeah, he is the last person you should be looking to for life advice. Please stop watching his videos.

[–] Whos_Blockin_Jimmy@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] apidelie@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean, don't take life advice from him either.

[–] borisslovechild@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Not a photographer who has made millions but someone who has lived a little. I'd say it takes a combination of hard work, talent, connections, and a vast amount of luck. Alternatively, be a nepo baby. Imagine if your parents are, for argument's sake, Victoria and David Becckham.

[–] Nerdy_Slacker@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Premise of your question is ridiculous, and other comments are rightfully pointing that out.

The straight answer is you will never be rich as an individual photographer, but I’m sure you could be rich building a photography related business that grows to be larger than any one person.

potential exception is if you become a famous artist, and can sell with your work for millions of dollars while still alive. Think Jeff Koons of photography. But even then, he’s more than just himself, he basically has a fine art factory in a studio.

[–] Mekemu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I mean you already are lost cause if you watch people like Andrew Tate. That means your lack of self esteem and common sense will lead to failure.

If you want to make money with photography you should go to university and study electronical or optical engineering. Then search for a job in the defence industry and tada money.

[–] hexiy_dev@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

oh no not that guy

[–] weeddealerrenamon@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Talking to rich people on the street will not bring you wealth. There's something to be said for networking, but you're not networking. You're just fanning their rich person ego for a while, letting them show off their car, and hoping money will fall in your lap.

If you want to be rich, get an engineering degree and make tech for the military, or get an MBA and try your luck in venture capital. Either way the pursuit of wealth above all else is a miserable way to live.

[–] alliumstallion@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

My advice is stop listening to Andrew Tate

[–] No_Refrigerator4584@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The old joke was: How do you get $1 Million with photography? Start with $2 Million.

Kidding aside, becoming a millionaire photographer happens rarely, if at all. But if you work hard to build a commercial business you can make a comfortable living depending on what your field is, as long as you realize that you’ll have some really busy months and some months where you’ll be wondering where the clients are. It’s hard slog, there’s no magic button to press, and most photography fields, if not all, are highly saturated. Find your niche, work hard, and be prepared to fall flat on your face a few times before you figure things out. Remember, it’s a business first and foremost. Treat it as such. Offer quality work that appeals to your target market, and learn marketing and how to operate a business. Manage your finances with the Profit First method, and take pride in your work.

Good luck, and listen to Seth Godin and other business educators, you’ll get more out of his works than Tate’s.

[–] gillgrissom@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You've a real problem, as your only goal in life is " i want to be rich "

[–] kennypd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I explained very broadly man. It's too much for me to explain why I want to be rich but even then again most people won't understand, it's the internet after all 😅

[–] gillgrissom@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You have explained yourself quite well, your only interested in wealthy people and being rich yourself.

Your best bet is to just fart, as thats how aresoles talk to themselves.

[–] kennypd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I don't want to argue too much about this, but firstly what's wrong with wanting to be rich and learning how people go wealthy?

Second of all the reason why I want to get rich is so that I can then have more time to work on myself and not have to worry about money as I do now

[–] gillgrissom@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Your obsessed with wealth.

If its that bad for you, then why not head on over to twitch and stream games.

People make a decent amount of money getting an audience of people, whom follow them. And are gullible enough to give them money.

[–] Humble_Butterfly1279@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

There’s nothing wrong with have “pie in the sky” goals. What’s the worst that can happen.

I do feel, however, that you need to stop watching people like Andrew Tate. He feeds off your insecurities and sells you impossible ideals. He basically makes money off your delusions. And he is really not a nice person and a not a role model at all.

Surround yourself with really people - local photographers in your niche - and work from there. Real connections and hard work is the only way you’ll get somewhere in life.

[–] lilgreenrosetta@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

As everyone here has said, please stop listening to Andrew Tate (and anyone even remotely like him).

These guys will NOT help you become rich, or successful, or confident around women.

What they will do is make you frustrated, materialistic, misogynistic, scared, misinformed, and angry and overall turn you into a shitty person.

I'm serious, they will poison your mind in ways you cannot comprehend. Get out while you can and find some positive influences instead.

[–] josephallenkeys@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

It's possible. But not for someone who's watched too much Andrew Tate.

This whole post would be more at home on r/photographycirclejerk

[–] Elegant-Raise@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Probably not

[–] BadPronunciation@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

If you sell an overpriced photography course, then yes you can

[–] lew_traveler@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I drive a very nice car and if some random teen asked for a photoshoot, I’d walk or drive away. I don’t want people I don’t know to get deep into my life.

[–] lukmcd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Sure, use your father’s name to start a nationwide chain of family photo studios. Treat employees like shit and allow for 0 customer service. Then once you’re nationwide, shut down in the middle of the night and disappear.

[–] nubululu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You can make millions as an actor, singer songwriter. Same with photography. But there is 1000% an easier way to make millions. So if it is about the millons. I would suggest to look out for another route :)

[–] nataliephoto@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes, absolutely. You need to run it like any other successful business. Your skills with a camera are irrelevant.

[–] Comprehensive_Tea924@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

A few things -stop listening to Andrew Tate.

  • there’s loads of ways to make money, photography is probably on the list of hardest way to make a lot of money.

Just knowing rich people will not make you rich unless you get a sugar momma or daddy. You’re better off going to college for something like business or finance and working on wall street or something similar. Unless you have the luck and talent of Annie Leibowitz you’re not going to make very many millions.

[–] Bramble1847@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You could try your hand at shooting porn?

[–] mindlessgames@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] kennypd@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Already have man, I have saved up a good amount. So what's your point?

[–] SchwiftyMcpoopybutt@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Your first problem is you're taking advice from Andrew Tate, who is a world-class douche who is in love with his own reflection. He's a shit bag.

You're young and you're still measuring wealth in dollars. I'm not seeing passion for photography or anything else here except your desire use it as a mechanism to make a million dollars. It's possible but unless you're Annie Leibovitz and have a time machine it's unlikely.

Nobody wants to be a "starving artist". Hell, nobody wants to be a starving anything, but you're doing yourself a disservice by being this shallow.

[–] OwnPomegranate5906@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Can there be millionaires? Yes. Can everybody be a millionaire? No. Why? If everybody was a millionaire, then nobody is a millionaire. The way a capitalistic system works is there are those that control most of the money, and those that want to control most of the money.

Can you be a "have not" and work your way up to being a "have"? Yes, but it's not that easy, and it requires doing a lot of work that you probably won't like, but you want to be a "have", so you grin and bear it and do the work.

If it were really that easy, everybody would be doing it, but as evidenced, not many actually are, so it must not be that easy.

[–] Western-Alfalfa3720@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago
  1. Andrew Tate

Lol, first world problems

  1. Millions of photography

Nah dawg, ain't gonna happen. In photography you invest in skills, gear and hope for the best. Very few get their shot, even fewer make it count and even like that it's not like zomg teh millions. Art generally tends to make you poor rather than rich and photography is no exception.

[–] okitha_irl@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You can be a millionaire selling socks, the point is to build a brand. That's the best advice imo you can take from these "influencers". You watch them for their brand (which is essentially cars and women).

Its the same when it comes to Photography. 1st work, 2nd build a brand. Build a portfolio, work for free if you have to. Then you have a brand you can offer. Then the money starts flowing.

Also its better to do multiple things, for example try editing stuff on Fiverr, maybe learn Graphic Designing, incorporate it into your photography and sell it.

Lots of opportunities.

Now stop thinking and start doing. Good Luck.

[–] sib2sxm@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

In the words of Peter F. Drucker; the only purpose of a business is to create a customer.

Figure out how to create customers (consistently) and you can make a million at anything.

[–] NeverNatty711@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The hate on Tate here is funny. Sure, he says dumb stuff but he also tells you things that can help you on your journey to become succesful. Don’t believe in everything he saya but also keep stay open minded and seek or create opportunities like he did.

I think it’s possible to become a millionaire with photography but not with shooting alone. You probably need a business around the subject photography. Create content, maybe your own brand focused on a photography etc.
