With modern cameras the noise is mostly inherent randomness in the number of photons that hit that particular pixel. If you want to find the ”real” root cause, it’s simply the random behavior of the light source which sends out photons at some rate (aka brightness) where the time and direction of each individual photon is random.

The more photons that pixel collects, the more that randomness is averaged out and thus the less noisy the image is.

I think of James Popsys as fun light entertainment that also contains some nuggets of wisdom.

At least the category winners were almost all massively better than the photoshop crap that dominated Fotofinlandia.

You shot this image VERY wide and are cropping in substantially on a 20MP image.

And they are pixel peeping at around 5x pixel magnification which will make even a small amount of noise look much worse than it would at 1:1 crop.

Whoever came up with the idea of vertical video (particularly with large crop bars) was an idiot. Humans have two eyes side by side horizontally, not vertically.

Going to be mighty difficult to adjust lighting in events you don't control.
