A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

Hello! I live in an area where winter is longer than summer. Looking for winter photography ideas! I hike a bit so last winter I did do a lot of winter photography in the mountains. But I'll be hiking less this winter and wondering what you guys usually do for photography during the cold weather seasons? Thanks! :)

I tend to go to several different parks in the city where I live and take snow and scenery photographs. Streets scenes can be fun also. I have slip on cleats for my boots. Good idea to have a spare battery. I usually take photographs for about 30 to 45 minutes, then go for lunch somewhere.

Another winter activity that's fun and inside, is to practice taking still life photographs.

Oh okay, thanks so much!! I have cleats so that would be an easy one for me. Hm, I haven't tried still life but that sounds cool too. Thank you!! We have lots of parks here but I haven't really explored them in the winter for photography, just walks!

I try to look thru the bargain-bins after Christmas for cheap toys to play macro with.

Haha love that! Will try that too after Christmas

I like shadows on snow a lot. Also the way ice forms on moving water and how water and ice reflect light differently. Also shooting skiing (Alpine, Nordic, or Alpine Touring) is fun and again the shadows can be interesting.

Ooo thanks so much! That sounds interesting indeed!

I do some hiking and photography but where I live it's pretty unphotogenic in the winter - a lot of drab deciduous forests and brown barren prairies. Mostly I switch to oil painting inside where it's warm and cozy. I like to make oil paintings of scenes I previously photographed. It's a lot of fun!

Frozen soap bubbles is really fun if it's cold enough https://youtu.be/kcUYvUpc58E

Also your breath will melt them like a blowtorch, really fun.

I bet if you found a snowplow goin on a rural road it could make for a decent pic. Or a parked snowplow under a decent amount of snow

Maybe in black and white

For me Winter is all about festivals, i like the spirit of festivals in all cultures and across the world.

I am always fascinated by the energy in people and everything that happens around us. Some of the themes I'm targeting to capture this winter and sharing here for you.

People: Capture the energy and excitement of the festival crowd. Look for interesting characters and candid moments.
Music: Capture the passion and artistry of the performers. Shoot close-ups of their hands, faces, and instruments.
Fashion: Festival fashion is always a sight to behold. Look for stylish festivalgoers and capture their unique looks.
Art: Many festivals feature art installations and sculptures. Shoot these from unique angles and perspectives.
Food and drink: Festival food and drinks are a big part of the experience. Shoot close-ups of delicious dishes and drinks.

Let me know if you want to collaborate on it as well. I'm accepting collaboration requests on www.wondor.art/collab/rahul-gupta-1
