Yeah that's the thing, this rule was implemented to stop people from showboating. It's insane plyers get a tech for trying to take a second to safely land.

Yeah that's a good point. They do the same thing for the points, rebounds, steals, etc. per game champ where if they don't play enough games if they still would lead the league adding those games they'll still win the crown.
The Spurs had chances but never were able to go back to back. It's not unlikely that without that revenge factor of avenging their only Finals loss against the team that did it to them that the next season in 2014 they come up a bit short.
