WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monarez testified before senators on Wednesday that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired her after she refused to endorse forthcoming vaccine recommendations without reviewing scientific evidence to support the guidance.

Monarez was ousted just 29 days into the job, over disagreement with her boss on vaccine policies.

Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who chairs the powerful health committee Monarez is appearing before, expressed skepticism over the explanations Kennedy has given over her firing. He carefully praised President Donald Trump for his commitment to promoting health among Americans but made it clear he was befuddled by Monarez’s removal. He noted that senators had just approved Monarez’s confirmation with Kennedy praising her “unimpeachable scientific credentials.”

“Like, what happened?” Cassidy said. “Did we fail? Was there something we should have done differently?”

Monarez said in her testimony that Kennedy gave her an ultimatum: “Preapprove” new vaccine recommendations from an advisory CDC panel that Kennedy has stocked with some medical experts who doubt vaccine safety or be fired. That panel is expected to vote on new vaccine recommendations later this week. He also demanded Monarez fire high-ranking, career CDC officials without cause, she said.

“He said if I was unwilling to do both, I should resign. I responded that I could not preapprove recommendations without reviewing the evidence, and I had no basis for firing,” Monarez told senators. “He said he had already spoken with the White House several times.”

So I started the Google Takeout process because I want to move my photos from Google Photos to Immich.

Google emailed me saying the archives are ready... uh... I have to download 81 zip files, each 2GB big... 😬

Is there an easy way to download all of these files? Or do I have to click "download" 81 times and hope the downloads don't get interrupted?

Should OS makers, like Microsoft, be legally required to provide 15 years of security updates?

President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff regime is already reshaping global trade and spiking government customs revenue. But these historic import taxes could also push more Americans into poverty, according to new research.

An analysis published by The Budget Lab at Yale on Tuesday finds Trump’s tariff hikes will likely increase the number of Americans living in poverty by 875,000 in 2026. This increase includes an additional 375,000 children in poverty.

Nature Walk

Hiked 9/7/25

Flickr Album

A short nature walk on the historic grounds of Woodstock. Various historical information may be found on the grounds, as well as a museum and modern venue that regularly hosts shows. Fun fact: all the videos are CSN no Y, even though he performed as well but refused to sign the video release forms.

Side view of the hill leading down to the stage for Woodstock, which would have been on the far left of the frame.

The modern Bethel Woods venue. Exposure is a little odd on this one, having the exposed cloudy sky and the shaded venue underneath.

Vintage USA themed clothing. Sign below it mentions the hippies of the era wearing a lot of patriotic adornments.

Plate left at the Message Tree. Reads: To Cindy (with the black hair & sister). I'm sorry I was too untogether to remember to ask for your address. Please call (A Phone Number) -> Later in the Week, Dan

Thought the untogether phrasing was just too funny.

A friend is looking for one and I don't know what to recommend.

Assuming that the goal is to never connect it to the internet and plug in another device with HDMI.

Edit 4: Color correction and trying to make it less dark. I also finally seem to have found the correct slider in GIMP to turn DS9 into a sitcom (or maybe a Mexican soap opera?)

So I am on a dorm in further away city, with a roommate, unfortunately. (Yes, the title makes sense)

However, I am not quite good at the people stuff.
I don't quite feel comfortable being near people, or hell, even randomly accessible (i.e. doors without a lock). I kind of have a hard time even just doing anything. Basically, the only non-awkward feeling place I can look at is my laptop or phone screen, as usual in such spaces with people.

Hell, I've been here since 2nd Sept. and I haven't even figured out the canteen or laundry room (I've been home twice), so I just keep living on supermarket junk.
For the former, I don't know where to take the tray and cutlery, how to choose food, where to return plates + cutlery, in which order to do the first 2, and I didn't yet really get to observe people.
For the former, I had questions about payment (card only - no PIN pad), but they haven't answered my e-mail.

My roommate has left for a few minutes, so I got to stand up, walk around and listen to radio while thinking.
When he came back, I finally left in search of a more private place. Hell, at this point the alone time in elevator feels heavenly.

Library? Meh, there will be people.
How about a park? There probably won't be many people at 9PM. I checked the map, but the park-like thing turned out to be a cemetery. Well fuck it, that's a large chunk of land with trees (and there's benches).

So I tried to go there, and then found out it has opening hours...

I tried to search around for an alternative entry point, but didn't find one (the fence isn't climbing-friendly).
Yeah, yeah, but a green space in a city is a scarce resource.
