Garrett isn't even the best defensive player in the league. It's Bland right now.
Getting pressures and sacks at the rate Garrett them isn't as potent as the coverage and pick-6s Bland gets. The effect Bland has on the offense is greater than Garrett's.
Sacks might not even end a drive. Pick sixes end drives and get points. The only more impactful play you could have than that is injuring the QB.
You can scheme away and behind the leagues best pass rushers and have success. If you scheme away from a CB, you're shutting down half of the field on some plays.
WRs are better and more effective than ever before. Edge USED to be the most important position on D, now its Corner. We're at a shift in the league thats been happening for the last couple years. Advanced analytics backs this up.
Also, whether you like it or not, QBs are more valuable than any other position by a mile and its not up for debate. It also doesn't matter that there isn't a clear-cut MVP in your eyes. Just because we don't have guys chasing records every year doesn't suddenly make Bland, Garret, Donald and Watt more valuable. You just want a cool story of a season so great it "almost" rises to as valuable as a QB. I hate that it's a value award too, but I won't lie to myself for narratives. Give us a most outstanding performance award or similar.
You might say consensus is changing on Edge being more important, but the salaries for edge rushers still are an order higher than CBs, and edges are still drafted higher more often.
Contract markets can take years to shift for one. Two, the flaw in that line of thinking is that obviously annual pay doesn't equate to JUST your effect on the field, there are other factors like how it's generally safer to invest in an edge guy because they can come back from injury easier, you lose a step at corner and your CAREER might be over. Same in the draft, they don't just draft edge because of its importance, they draft them because they're easier to scout and they are a WAY safer pick. I would do the same thing at the top of the draft.
Then why isn't anyone else doing it?
The point is none of the pick-sixes even helped his team win. The picks aren't that valuable if thats case. DPOY makes more sense.
