Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Honestly, good. Squeeze those stupid motherfuckers dry. Because when they've given everything they have to Trump and they get nothing in return except deeper into poverty, that's when they will feel the pain they deserve.

But the depth of their devotion to someone who gives zero fucks about them is truly astounding.

I agree with the sentiment completely, but they'll be even more poor and desperate. Which makes them easier to control/manipulate and even more likely to accept whatever scapegoat their golden calf god tells them is the cause of their poverty.

[–] MagicShel@programming.dev 22 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I just made another comment elsewhere that said essentially I don't think democracy works when the wealth disparity gets too high, which at its root is pretty similar to what you're saying here, so I totally agree with your point.

It can if set up right. It's just not set up right.

I would love for potential politicians to be completely anonymous. You get their political platform, their voting history, and that's it. The candidates would be randomly selected from a database of people with the necessary qualifications to hold office, so no one can really buy their way in.

they'll be even more poor and desperate

It also makes them more dangerous.

[–] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I guess we didn't learn from Nazis coming into power in Germany...

[–] MagicShel@programming.dev 13 points 2 years ago

A significant portion of America supported the fucking Nazis so yeah, I think it's clear we didn't learn shit. Not even the stupid fuckers who saw it happen in front of their eyes.

[–] lettruthout@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

And maybe the wrong people learned more about how to manipulate others.

[–] Dkarma@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

No money for down ballots

Creating desperate and angry people is generally not a good thing for anyone even if it might provide some temporary emotional satisfaction.

I’ve subscribed to the theory white supremacists backed by Christian Nationalist Billionaires have fueled this entire conflict and culture war.

First the pedophiles infiltrated the church, then the White Supremacy movement saw how easy it was and joined in.

Purely speculative other then project 2025 as proof

Why are some of you Americans so fucking dumb and why is it infectious?

The GOP has been fighting a war against our educational system for about 70+ years. Add to that the fact that most of these people have been voting R for generations, so it's basically like a religion to them.

There's also the news networks that feed them the bullshit they've been brainwashed into wanting to believe.

Add it all together and you get yourself a cult.

Populism infects the world every century. It's a simmering, low level infection until the vaccine (horrors of war) wears off, and Populism turns into fascism and millions of young men are sacrificed to push the infection back to the brink yet again.

The only cure is education, and giving people the tools for a better and brighter future where they have the sense that they have everything to lose should they regress.

[–] rauls4@lemm.ee 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Honestly, I still wonder if I am having a really long bad dream. It just doesn’t add up. In the past elections have been close. This fucking asshole is despised by every democrat and a good deal of ex-republicans but he still is ahead in the polls. How does that square up?

[–] aseriesoftubes@lemmy.world 37 points 2 years ago (2 children)

presidential campaign of Donald Trump said it raised

The word “said” in that sentence is doing a lot of heavy lifting. They can say they raised eleventy brazilian dollars. It doesn’t make it true. The media is doing a heck of a job amplifying Trump’s lies.

[–] Chocrates@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Do you have reason to think they are lieing? Edit: other than the rack their lips are moving.

[–] iAmTheTot@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

If anything, I'd expect them to under-report, not over exaggerate. That way they can siphon off the rest for hush money payments.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 2 points 2 years ago

Eleventy Brazilian dollars? Why not Eleventy German dollars? It's 7 times more!

[–] dogsnest@lemmy.world 24 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What was the record?

What was the old record?

Was it adjusted for inflation?

Who's recording and measuring these records?

[–] Bipta@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago

I don't know the answers except that they don't adjust these for inflation. But I do know from years of watching politics that the old record isn't anywhere close to this. I don't recall ever even seeing $10 million raised in one day.

[–] Burstar@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That'll buy a lot of Ramen noodles from the commissary.

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They can say a lot of things. Let's not get too excited until we get the filing

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 years ago

Yeah has there been anything, that Trump's been in charge of, not lied about the smallest thing? It's pretty much a prerequisite for working under him. All things he leads is to puff his ego to the media and funnel any revenue to his own bank account. Then go bankrupt so Trump can keep the cash.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 years ago

What a train wreck everything's become.

[–] Mostly_Harmless_Variant@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This makes me think of the sunk cost fallacy. I figure they are so heavily invested at this point that they are doubling down. If they don't have Trump to back their views, they might realize being a bigot isn't cool.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

It's a lot like his businesses back on the day. He tried the well being of something larger to him personally, so that a lot of stakeholders are desperate to bail him out specifically lest their larger concern is tanked. When his properties were in trouble in the 80s, investors/creditors helped boost his reputation because that was the only hope to salvage their money.

Here he made it so the entire Republican party will succeed or fail according to his personal situation. So desperation to mitigate his personal mess for the sake of their precious Republican party.

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 8 points 2 years ago

That's because Republicans care about Law And Order and Family Values!

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Are there laws about profiteering from crime in the US? Time to put them to good use.

You can't buy more voters this election.

You actually haven't been able to buy voters in a while.

People are locked in. It's all about driving your base at this point.

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Well, you know what they say, a fool and their money are soon parted.

[–] root_beer@midwest.social 2 points 2 years ago

[1] Without external confirmation, I don’t buy it. [2] I’ll never understand why it isn’t a major talking point to tell these mark-ass tricks that the man is playing them for the trick-ass marks they are and fleecing them for all they have, but I guess if even Jesus is too weak they’ll just have to tithe to a different, properly sadistic megachurch.
