When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross
-- Not sure who said it, but it's frequently mis-attributed to Sinclair Lewis
Funny thing. If I write about robert A. Heinlein, people here call him a fascist.
In "Revolt In 2100" Heinlein wrote about America becoming a fascist state under a religious leader.
didn't Heinlein write the original, non-satirical starship troopers?
The guy definitely had an authoritarian streak.
He also wrote The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (a libertarian revolution on the moon), Stranger in a Strange Land (a hippie sex cult started by a Martian), and one of my oddball favorites, Job: a Comedy of Justice (a man who lives through Armageddon by jumping through different universes).
It's almost like you can't judge a speculative sci-fi writer by just one of his books.
He also wrote "...All You Zombies" which is about a transman; "Tunnel In The Sky" with an African woman hero; "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" which is considered a Libertarian classic: and "Stranger In A Strange Land" which is considered a counter-culture classic and about a hundred other books with different themes.
More like, he had a wide ranging mind and could handle several ideas at once without bowing down to any.
He also wrote Stranger in a Strange Land and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Taken all together, these three works and all the rest of his bibliography, saying he had an authoritarian streak is as valid as saying he had a hippie streak or a libertarian streak.
His writing asks questions, he doesn’t preach. Some of his characters preach, but that isn’t necessarily him speaking. It’s him asking questions and spurring discussion.
When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.

At what point do the powers that be start calling a spade a spade and label these the terrorist groups that they are?
There is absolutely no basis in reality or reason for this insane, violent, rhetoric.
This is Texas we're talking about. They don't label them as terrorists because they think of them as freedom fighters.
Then maybe the Dept of State should label Texas as a state sponsor of terrorism then? Only half joking.
Abbott did just pardon a murderer for being a conservative who killed a liberal. So you're not that far off.
At what point do the powers that be start calling a spade a spade
When they no longer benefit from the terrorists doing their bidding for them (so never, under the current system anyway).
Since the thread is on a topic of white supremacy in the US, I thought it might be interesting to share a little about how we tainted calling a spade a spade. We do that with a lot of things and have extra baggage on a lot of topics that other places might not.
Stop acting like these nutjobs are just nutjobs...
This is mainstream Republican ideology these days. And the more Dems move to the right, the crazier republicans get because they have nowhere to go but to the right.
Republicans are a cornered dog, but if Dems actually started moving to the left, that gives Republicans room to not be so bat shit crazy to differentiate from Dems
This shit ain't complicated, but everyone keeps making the moves that results in both of our only political options becoming more and more conservative
This is mainstream Republican ideology these days. And the more Dems move to the right, the crazier republicans get because they have nowhere to go but to the right.
I don't really see the dems moving to the right. Clinton-->Obama-->Biden does not seem to be a rightward drift. I will agree that change of any sort has been very slow though.
I mean clinton was a big right shift and obama did not exactly move way left but he sorta held the line and biden has leftward potential but it remains to be seen. Most of what he has accomplished has been without congress so not exactly lasting.
Ronald Reagan was so popular the democrats all shifted right to try and win back votes. Clinton's politics were called 'the third way' because he tried to be not quite a republican and not quite a democrat, but somewhere in the middle.
So Republicans don't move leftward... and that's the Dems' fault? Jesus Christ, you're so willing to create apathy and division on the left/center-left axis that you'll ignore the prime cause staring you in the face:
The GOP could move back towards the center, they choose not to.
It is not the Dems' fault Republicans have no desire or intention to stop their full-on fascism train.
And before you "B-b-b-b-but the Dems!" yes, it's bad for them to move rightward too. But chasing the rightward movement, and causing the rightward movement, are obviously differing degrees of bad.
So Republicans don’t move leftward… and that’s the Dems’ fault?
Where did I say that?
I said:
And the more Dems move to the right, the crazier republicans get because they have nowhere to go but to the right.
I just can't think of a simpler way to say that...
What part are you having trouble with?
Sure, republicans could move to the left, even pass Dems like the last party switch.
But why would they want to? Modern republicans are full on religious fascists, they want to be even further right than they are now.
I'm saying we stop following them, because when we do, everyone except ultra wealthy donors and religious extremists lose.
If you don't believe this, pull up the 12 questions that were on the Texas primary ballot in March. All received greater than 50% approval.
Literally the second sentence of what you just replied to...
This is mainstream Republican ideology these days.
Yes, i was agreeing and saying that if you question it, you should check out the Texas Republican primary questions. I previously thought it was only the maga kooks that were so hateful, but seeing those questions in print on a ballot was shocking.
The embodiment of: "When You’re Accustomed to Privilege, Equality Feels Like Oppression"
There's no such thing as "white America" only racist jurisdictions
When I've exhausted the research options and i still don't know who to vote for, i go to the TTP website and vote opposite their recommendations.
Sounds like you could save yourself some effort and skip straight to that step.
Yeah, you still have to weed through some dipshits to choose the least bad. I'll start with the TTP site in November and go from there.
Who is surprised? Anyone?
We should be well past “omg look” articles, but - strangely - we never seem to be
