Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Holy shit this is hard to watch.

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 23 points 2 years ago (4 children)

I hear you. All you hear about is how incoherent Biden is... Bullshit. He comes across as articulate and knowledgeable here. Trump hasn't said anything at all yet. He just keeps spouting idiotic generalizations about how bad the state of the country is without any examples or proof.

[–] aleph@lemm.ee 34 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Calling Biden articulate is being incredibly generous. I mean, what on earth was he trying to communicate here?

Overall, Biden put in a very lackluster, unconvincing performance while Trump did his usual schtick of rambling off topic, lying through his teeth, and refusing to answer any questions on policy. The whole thing was a shambles.

[–] OsaErisXero@kbin.run 24 points 2 years ago

Don't forget the oughtright lies.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago (1 children)

No, it's hard to watch because Biden needs to clear his throat and keeps drifting off.

Trump keeps not answering questions and lying and dodging.

It's all around pathetic.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 28 points 2 years ago (1 children)

One guy is slightly hoarse.

The other is a delusional fascist.

So basically both sides the same.

...

During a response to a question about abortion, Biden mentioned, seemingly out of nowhere, a young woman who was recently murdered by an immigrant — an apparent reference to a 12-year-old Houston girl who was strangled to death, allegedly by two Venezuelan men who entered the country illegally.

The connection to abortion was unclear.

Q: Will you accept the results of the election, regardless of who wins?

Trump: "...and all they want to talk about is a relatively small number of people who went to the capitol"

A 'relatively small number of people who went to the capitol' a.k.a the January 6 Insurrection

So far, he's twice refused to answer the question.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 42 points 2 years ago (1 children)

biden sounds like shit, but hes got all the right words. hes made a few mistakes hes quickly fixed, but no giant mistakes and lots of details.

trump is doin what trump does... throw a wall of lies loudly

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 25 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I don't know, I'm for sure voting Biden, but I can't say he's doing great. He's doing a little better when he's getting riled, but he sounds old - more than three years older than Trump.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 28 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

agreed, but if you imagine those words in print, its very obvious biden knows whats hes talking about.

the morals of an alley cat!

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 15 points 2 years ago

Oh, for sure. And I've worked with enough really sharp older people to know their words can get flubbed up when they're on the spot when even though their brains are sharp.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's been shown the office ages you. But not Trump because he never took the office seriously.

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Yep, agreed. Trump doesn't take anything seriously except bilking anyone he can.

[–] nieceandtows@programming.dev 35 points 2 years ago

Is there a video on how to unsee the debate?

[–] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 31 points 2 years ago (1 children)

"Their taking Black jobs, and their taking Hispanic jobs ..."

"What exactly is a Black or Hispanic job Mr. Trump?" should have been the follow up on that one.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 13 points 2 years ago (2 children)

He's just adding "black" to his earlier immigrant fear mongering spiel. He spewed the exact same thing to an earlier question, but he just added "black" jobs and "Hispanic" jobs to that version.

Biden stumbled and lost the tread in the opening minutes but is doing well now.

Trump is doing a good job at being Trump. Pretty tired of him ignoring the question and talking about whatever he likes and the moderator letting him.

[–] Hildegarde@lemmy.world 26 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What even is the point of this debate? They've both had a term in office. We know how both of them actually govern the actual country. What can this debate possibly convey that the past 8 years of governance hasn't?

[–] 555_1@lemmy.world 25 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Whatever the point was, it’s a very sad show. Trump is a liar and Biden can’t string a sentence together.

We’re all fucked.

[–] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Yep, thats my impression as well so far.

Trump is confidently blazing through (what should be) obvious lies, while Biden is mumbling and forgetting what he is trying to say half way through saying it.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 13 points 2 years ago

Yeah, he's getting blasted by a firehose of bullshit. Though he seems to be getting pissed off, and that seems to be helping.

Someone down voted you but I can't imagine why. I desperately want Biden to win but he looks like shit out there. Trump, meanwhile, is confidently spouting whatever horseshit pops into his head (even had the fucking gall to call Biden a criminal). Half the government is gleefully destroying the country and the other half is letting them. I honestly don't see a way forward for this country. I don't like to be a cynic but I cannot imagine a scenario where the next four years aren't an absolute clusterfuck.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 24 points 2 years ago (11 children)

Trump once again confirmed support for Isreal accelerating the genocide - if you think there's no difference between their policy on Palestine, you're arguing in bad faith.

"You have the morals of an alley cat" 😂

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 22 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Is it my imagination or are they moderators letting Trump go on while cutting Biden off most of the time?

I wish Biden would slow down, he's getting flustered and can't seem to find his words. Trump is just acting like it's a rally, saying whatever the hell he wants and making shit up. This is ridiculous.

Holy fucked up choices.... Why, why, why can we not, with our vast knowledge and speed of passing information in our fancy futuristic world, do some ranked choice, or any other voting style, that would actually give us a choice we might feel we have opted for?

My mind wasn't changed on my choice I will have to make. But, wow, I feel like I might really be a responsible adult if this is what our chosen leaders look like in a live debate. I don't like this feeling. It's icky.

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

The reason is because republicans know they must prevent it, or they'll become extinct.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Trump still bragging about "acing" his cognitive test (the one he took to rule out dementia). Then had the gall to say "I'd like to see [Biden] take one".

Really wish Dark Brandon would have come out to play. "Woman, Man, Camera, Podium. There. That's what you keep bragging about"

The poor performance and miserable result of this debate is not an indicator the format is bad, it is an indictment of our media circus that has given us these candidates in the first place.

This is proof our system is fucked and I hope to god we don’t “fix” this by going back to letting opponents talk all over each other just to put on ~~a good~~ an entertaining show.

We stayed up to watch it here across the pond, made it to 10 minutes.

Seriously, WTF is going on over there? How are these two people the top candidates to represent 380 million people?

[–] morphballganon@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Conservative gerrymandering, court-stacking, purging voter rolls, propaganda etc

The best way to watch it is huddled in a corner, crying.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The whiner line is pretty good. Whenever Dark Brandon takes over, Joe doesn't look so bad.

One hilarious take-away... Trump literally doesn't know what the opioid crisis is. He completely floundered trying to respond.

I could only make it like five minutes, but this is a great summary by the AP:

In first half hour of debate, a raspy Biden has delivered rambling answers that sometimes trail off as he defends his policies and record.

Trump has countered with falsehoods on issues including the economy, abortion and NATO members’ defense spending.

The two have also exchanged deeply personal attacks.

https://apnews.com/live/presidential-debate-2024-updates

Edit:

Biden was talking about "saving Israel" too. Despite the vast majority pissed at how he's handling it.

The conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians is an especially vulnerable spot for Biden. With only 26% of U.S. adults approving of his handling of the issue, it’s well below his overall approval rating (39%). In the latest AP-NORC poll, nearly 6 in 10 Democrats disapprove of his approach to the conflict.

He's completely out of touch with what voters want. I have zero idea how anyone could think risking trump as president is worth giving an 82 year old we don't want another term in office.

Why are we running someone Dem voters actually want?

That 26% of people that approve of what he's doing with Israel is all US adults, including trump supporters. It's not even 26% of Dems...
