One month after The Washington Post revealed that the Egyptian government may have illegally given Donald Trump $10 million in 2017, Democrats have announced they will be investigating the allegations.

Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, led by ranking member Representative Jamie Raskin, announced in a press release Tuesday that they will be “demanding answers” from the Republican presidential nominee not only over the possible bribe from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, but also over evidence that the Justice Department, led at the time by Attorney General William Barr, covered it up.

It is kind of impressive how wildly unsophisticated the Trump clan is with their scams. I guess if it works on their rube supporters. What I mean is like why bother investing in a real bearded lady when you can just show them a poorly drawn picture of one and charge the same admission.

Republicans will deny it, refuse to cooperate, and face zero consequences, so what does it matter?

[–] Fades@lemmy.world 24 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

they've been allowed to do whatever they want for so long they stopped trying to properly hide it very long ago.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 7 points 18 hours ago

And they still get away with it. It's ridiculous.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 141 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Somehow I haven't heard of this before now - the Egyptian Government's intelligence agency apparently shuttled $10 million to the Trump Campaign through a shell company, then the investigation was buried when Trump took office and control of the Justice Dept.

This would be career ending for anyone else.

This would be career ending for anyone else.

For Donald Trump, it's a Tuesday.

[–] BertramDitore@lemm.ee 74 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, it’s pretty wild.

records indicate that four men ultimately arrived at the state-run National Bank of Egypt and carried away bags containing nearly $10 million in bundles of $100 bills. The money represented “what was then a sizable share of Egypt’s reserve of U.S. currency.” Source

Talk about suspicious…

Like cartels literally bringing in duffel bags full of money to launder at HSBC

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He has not been president for quite a while. The current DOJ has certainly had time to look into this.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You mean Merrick “mustn’t anger the republicans” Garland’s DOJ?

[–] barsquid@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I want that fucker gone. Fewer Garlands, more Khans.

I’m so sorry, I couldn’t resist.

I completely agree with you; she rocks.

I’ll see myself out

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago

I would love a few people with even half her spirit in the judicial branch...

To think he would have been Obama's shining SC pick...

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 1 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

You prefer Kavanaugh then I take it? Or Gorsuch?

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago

No, I think he should have picked someone who wasn't solely picked because it should have had a good chance of passing senate votes when McConnell wasn't going to allow a vote to begin with.

Pepperidge Farm Remembers

[–] tetrachromacy@lemmy.world 77 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Oh dip, they're demanding an answer this time. He's gonna have to respond or else they'll.... checks papers oh, they'll just demand it again. Must be nice to avoid any and all repercussions from breaking the law over and over and over again.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 6 points 20 hours ago

As an aside...

Oh dip

Is this a thing now? Is it like "oh damn"?

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Under normal circumstances, you ask the questions to get a record of the answers, so that you can prove the answers are lies. The more information the accused has when they provide answers, the more thoroughly they can lie.

With Mango Mussolini, there's never any consistency to his blatant lies, and he never pays any price for changing his story. Everyone knows he's a liar, so he can be as brazen as he wants to be because he knows he can lie without losing supporters.

So I'm with you. Democrats will circle up like a lacrosse team at a prep school mixer. Oh shit, Campbell is gonna go ask Lauren Z to dance. Let's go back him up. Here he goes-OH she said no... no wait he said "PSYCH!" He wasn't really asking, I bet she feels so dumb. Sick burn, Campbell. Let's go throw empty yoohoo bottles onto the roof of the auxiliary building and talk about what boobs probably look like.

That's what I picture every time I read about the Congressional Democrats. Campbell, Monty, Gunner, Brook, Tripp, Blake, and Gian, all hanging around in blazers and sweatervests talking about how cool it's going to be when they finally do something someday.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

And yet corporate news is unable - unwilling and unable - to say that he lies.

Journalism is a farce.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hey - don’t make them issue a statement!

Ohh ho, they’ll do it! And that statement will say they are very concerned!!

So - just watch your step, Clownface von Fuckstick

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Careful. They could issue a demerit. Three of those and you get a citation. Keep pressing your luck and after 5 citations you get a violation...

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 3 points 21 hours ago

Hey China, take notes. This is how you issue a stern rebuke!

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 45 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Beyond everything else, the fact that Donald Trump made so little money off the White House is staggering to me.

He could have gotten $50 billion from the Saudis on Inauguration Day if he'd had the balls to demand it.

He wouldn't have had to change any policies or make any new laws, just tell them that it was what it was.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Small-time player. Terrible at making deals.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

https://abcnews.go.com/US/tony-schwartz-author-donald-trumps-art-deal-trump/story?id=40662196

BTW, Trump pretty much gave away the farm to his co-author. Schwartz got full credit and half the profits, unheard of for a ghost writer. Schwartz also left Trump's circle after the book came out and has bad mouthed him ever since.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 12 points 23 hours ago

It wasn't titled "Art of the Great Deal".

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but he somehow marketed the hell out of it. It was somewhere down in the top 100 of the reading list before college.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think in the beginning he was testing the waters to see what he could get away with. He got more brazen as he got to the end of his term.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

He never went for the big bucks. Think of it this way; $10 million wouldn't buy an apartment in Trump Tower.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Couldn’t pay me $10M to live in a building with that fuck’s name on it. Hope they’ll all ashamed of their address.

[–] DandomRude@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Why would you ask him anything? His answer will always be the same: Biden, Harris or foreigners are to blame is what he would say. Why bother? It's a waste of time.
