Everything he said plus today.

With our current level of technology, that is impossible. Who knows what materials are we going to discover in the future?

[–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 11 minutes ago

Probably not a whole lot that breaks the rules that govern the universe.

[–] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I saw him live recently, and I am less annoyed by him now. Still annoyed, though.

Well a 8 mm Rope already can have a minimum breaking load of 50 kN, roughly equivalent of 5 tonne. So if you don't need to store high lengths of wire rope,.this should be absolutely possible.

I am personally someone who is annoyed by NDT. But I am not convinced his actions are net negative, and think the opposite is more likely. Folks who find him insufferable and also don't develop a passion for science probably aren't dissuaded from entering the field as a whole because of this one annoying guy. However, kids who find one season of Cosmos interesting or only see 5 of his tweets may actually develop a love for science before realizing that NDT is annoying. He'd be a much better role model, reach more people, and make the science community look better if he was better, but that doesn't make him bad when there are literally anti-science advocates out there. We need all the celebrity scientists we can get as long as they aren't actively doing harm in my opinion.

Edit: also, the number of ragebait debates he has started that get other folks talking about science isn't insignificant. He's probably gotten some people into science just so they could shut guys like him up lol

I'd say as far as public personalities go, he's in the good not great box. As bad as things are, society can use a whole lot more "good enough".

Edit: in the context of popular/public science education, which was what you were discussing. Nothing else about him is part of my statement.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I'm more annoyed that he's still using twitter then anything.

[–] Please_Do_Not@lemm.ee 6 points 3 hours ago

Haha certainly a criticism I can agree with

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

What do you find annoying about him? I think he's absolutely fine, though I don't follow him too closely, so I'm probably closer to that kid who watched a season of Cosmos and saw a handful of tweets than anything.

I looked a bit into him, and it looks like, as with many (most?) celebrities, there are sexual misconduct allegations. I don't know the details of any of those cases, so I can't really tell if it's legitimate, if he's largely being targeted due to his celebrity, or a mixture of both. Regardless, I don't think that matters at all when discussing his work on TV, running a planetarium, or doing science outreach programs. Nobody is perfect, so we should seek to separate the message from the messenger.

I'm much more interested in the "ragebait debates" thing you mentioned, but unfortunately his Wikipedia article doesn't mention "controversies" or whatever. That said, this has a lot more relevance to his work as a public science figure.

Honestly just look up "Neil Degrasse Tyson annoying" and I am sure you'll find plenty of examples and summaries. But it honestly boils down to his delivery and projected self image.

[–] Sporkbomber@lemm.ee 4 points 2 hours ago

Remember when he said computer security was easy because you just had to make your computer unhackable?

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Ah, that's really weird. These sound like high shower thoughts...

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 4 points 2 hours ago

Sounds like using Twitter properly lol

[–] CheesyFox@lemmy.sdf.org 0 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

He's perfect for kids, i guess, but he's always telling the simplest things with the attitude of the smartest man alive, and that's what irritates me. I understand the good he's doing aind kinda appreciate it, it's just that he's every-fucking-where.

edit: omfg, ater reading the comments here i reconsider. Fuck NDT.

[–] _____@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

did you know that you can kiss yourself in a mirror ? (x30 times)

or whatever he said

[–] jayk@lemmy.ca 22 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

NDT seems like the kinda guy that would be shoving some nerd into a locker. Dude was a wrestler. I don't think he'd be bullying nerds tho

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 33 points 6 hours ago

"I am not actually 'shoving' you into a locker Timmy. I am merely using mechanical force to shut the locker door through its hinges and simply allowing your body to find the path of least resistance: inside of it."

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 7 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Naw he just bullies everyone else acting like an expert in every single field because he's an expert in one while sexually harassing them.

NDT wouldn't bully nerds. He tries to rape them.

Edit: Reminder that NDT was accused of sexual harassment and assault by 4 women. He all but admitted it in a Facebook post where he tried justifying it with bizarre and frankly creepy reasons. Only real investigations done were by a company that had a finacial stake in him being found innocent (This was post filming Cosmos but before it was released).

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

He also had a scam Kickstarter video game at one point. He's a creep.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Wait what? Oh now I've gotta look into this.

Edit: Wow. Okay. So Neil pinned himself to a kickstarter for a Video Game called Space Odyssey: The Video Game that was being promised. When the KS was fully funded, the developer vanished and took all money. They promised a ludicrous amount of stuff, so much so that people were claiming it was a scam before the proof that it was happened. After everything was done, they claimed that the kickstarter was for an IDEA for a video game, not a game itself.

So either NDT is a gullible fool who can be roped into anything (which kind if discounts a lot of what he has to say) or he went in with the knowledge that this was a scam just so he could get a payout.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 2 points 5 hours ago

Yeah, i saw it on a YouTube channel that covers Kickstarter scams. No idea what the channel name is though.

[–] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 8 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Are you advocating for bullying of neurodivergent youth?

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 19 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (2 children)

I'm advocating for Neil deGrasse Tyson shutting the hell up every once in a while

Edit: Since I need to apparently explain this, NDT is specifically known and not liked for talking about subjects with which he has no knowledge as if he is an expert. Moreover, he will inject himself into random topics of conversation (much like this Halo one) to say that this entirely fantastical thing could never happen in reality because of this one specific thing. People are aware of that, he's not giving anyone new information. It just aggressively comes off as "Um, actually " and the fact that he will do it in the exact same tone of voice every single time is just grating.

Moreover, as pointed out elsewhere, NDT was a wrestler in high school. HE was the one doing the bullying in the first place which clearly extrapolated into his professional career given he was accused of sexual harassment by 4 women and then admitted it with bizarre ass justifications. So yeah. Fuck Neil DeGrasse Tyson. No I'm not pro putting neurodivergent youth into a locker and it's frankly idiotic to even suggest that or come to that conclusion. What I am pro is Neil deGrasse Tyson finally shutting up and exiting public life after acting like a monumental douchebag for decades.

[–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 minutes ago

I know at least one of those women said god told her about her “rape” in a dream. That’s just batshit crazy.

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world -1 points 6 hours ago (3 children)

His statement is absolutely correct. It's basic physics.

Simply don't listen and don't reply to statements you don't like. Just like the statement you are reading right now.

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago

Lol the last line of your comment sounded like it was read by ndt

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 2 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

My odor is absolutely authentic. It’s basic exocrinology. Simply don’t smell me and don’t comment on my smell if you don’t like it.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (2 children)

And just because it is correct doesn't mean that it's necessary. The only thing he does is go around on Twitter and actively insert himself into some popular thing just to say "Um actually it couldn't work because reason." It's douchebag behavior and the fact that this behavior with him is so consistent is just annoying. We know it isn't possible in real life. That's why he's a genetically created supersoldier killing aliens in space on a giant ring. Nothing about the franchise is realistic. It is annoying that he just goes "Hey this one particular thing? Wouldn't happen" when the rest of everything is also equally as impossible. That's what the post is about. It isn't going out and finding him and attacking him. It is merely opinion and a simple post. That's all. Chill.

Or, in other words, simply don't pay attention to and don't reply to posts that you don't like. I'd really suggest practicing what you preach. If he's allowed to randomly inject himself into a topic then so the hell am I.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

Why is the ring impossible?

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world -2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I don't preach that.

I don't even make posts about it ;)

[–] Stamets@lemmy.world -2 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Really? Because it looks like you just did by lecturing me about it.

Again. Practice what you preach. You don't get to go around and say "Um actually he's allowed to say whatever he wants" while actively denying other people that exact same ability.

I'm just blocking you now. This is some gross ass redditor behavior to try and police other peoples posts while acting like you're above it all. You're not. You're just lying to yourself.
