That's what makes it a particularly shitty design choice.
Because it's a computer banana and the mascot is real? I don't know, this makes no sense, but I can see how sometimes this kind of mix can work

Having no context, I assume its some kind "gold" you have to buy now (with real currency) to interact with reddit.
it's a banana, probably a nostalgia joke for the times when redditors often included a "banana for scale" in the photos they posted
