I predict he's going to do a great job, carry a lot of respect for the source material, get a season or two made before the network ruins it.

[–] steventhedev@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

GW are notorious for demanding creative veto. Not because they want to interfere but to maintain continuity.

So even if the quality goes, it won't ruin the canon.

Probably won't be Games Workshop that does it in; it'll be Amazon.

[–] Shareni@programming.dev 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

GW maintains continuity? Lol

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Only they may smash it to bits

[–] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago

As is tradition

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 84 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The balls on this guy. What a crazy IP universe to try and open.

[–] Exeous@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Wonder if he play Astartes or Custodes?

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 29 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

The Bemperor

That said, I think they should focus on the Guard or even the Arbites. Have Marines just come in like a wrecking ball at some point and DEMOLISH some xenos but mostly tell the story of regular humans.

I'd love a Ciaphas Cain series but it doesn't seem likely.

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

There was talk of Eisenhorn being serialized. No idea what happened to the project. The mobile game has shown the story is there and can be made into a movie (i.e. if you ignore the shitty gameplay and stabbing powerswords through doors and only focus on cinematics, it's cool).

[–] dufkm@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yup, the thought of a mainly Guard-focused series makes me moist.

[–] sprack@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Cadians or Kriegers? Either way they need shovels.

He said his favorite to play is Custodes.

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

I think he could pull off Titus tbh

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 55 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

If they do anywhere close to how well they did with Fallout I'm fucking BEYOND stoked. Call me the conductor of the hype train idgaf I can't even fathom being able to watch any show containing the 40k universe. I'm at half mast just thinking about it.

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Keep in mind that amazon also put out rings of power and halo.

[–] 1SimpleTailor@startrek.website 17 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Paramount did Halo but yeah. I think a key difference here is that there is actually passion and care for the source material on the production team rather then a bunch of Nepo hires trying to do their own thing with an IP they have been forced to work with and don't really care for.

[–] exasperation@lemm.ee 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The channel it appears on is often pretty far removed from the actual production company that produced it, and the actual creative team (writers, directors, showrunner, other producers).

Michael Schur learned how to produce a TV show from working on The Office (US) on NBC, and went on to be showrunner for Parks and Rec (NBC), Brooklyn Nine Nine (aired on Fox on most of its run), The Good Place (NBC), and Man on the Inside (Netflix).

Bill Lawrence was showrunner for Spin City (ABC), Scrubs (NBC), Cougar Town (ABC), Ted Lasso (Apple), Shrinking (Apple), and Bad Monkey (Apple).

Dan Harmon was showrunner for Community (NBC), Rick and Morty (Adult Swim), Strange Planet (Apple), and Krapopolis (Fox).

In each of these, you can see the continuity and similarities in production process and style, even if they're on different channels.

Look to producers: creator, showrunner, certain executive producers with creative roles, casting director (for example, I'll give anything a chance if it was cast by Allison Jones), with her track record), etc.

The actual network or streaming service it airs on is almost meaningless.

That should've been stuffed into a sack and thrown over a bridge before ever seeing the light of day.

[–] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

Wheel of Time is appalling also

With how much of a WH40k nerd he is, I can’t imagine anyone else doing it better.

[–] MisterD@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

I knew nothing of Fallout and I loved it

I'm curious about warhammer 40k and I hope Henry Cavill is allowed to make it work.

[–] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 41 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Wouldn't trust it to anyone other than him. Dude is a legit WH40K geek and is going to make sure the spirit of the franchise won't get lost in translation

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 32 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Isn't this old news? I think he talked about this years ago after quitting The Witcher.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 36 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The fact it's actually being made is new.

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, it looked like it might not get made for a while. Seems they ironed out the kinks.

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 18 points 2 weeks ago

Two years after acquiring global rights to ‘Warhammer 40,000’, Amazon MGM Studios has launched the development of a TV series based on the popular game.

The decision aligns with a critical timeline detailed in Games Workshop’s recent financial report, stating that Amazon and the game’s manufacturer needed to finalize creative guidelines by December 2024 to maintain development rights.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemm.ee 4 points 2 weeks ago

There was a deadline of the end of this month to determine if they were actually going forward with it

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I think so, from Dec 2022, https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/henry-cavill-warhammer-40000-amazon-1235283251

This article just adds,

The project recently gained momentum with the assembly of a mini-room, where writers collaborated to outline a creative direction for the series.

This teamwork has now paved the way for the TV series to proceed into development, though a showrunner has yet to be confirmed as negotiations continue.

So I guess progress has been made... But not much.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago

Good. Cavill is a talented guy, I hope it turns out to be an engaging series. Was sorry to see him leave Witcher, really enjoyed his take on the character.

[–] Thteven@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck yeah, I thought this project was dead in the water. I really hope Cavill can help keep them from amazoning it.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 11 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, proper nerd stuff with a budget, nice.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 10 points 2 weeks ago

Canceled before they air every episode. Even 2000AD stuff can’t quite break out internationally.

[–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Finally. He’s been wanting to do this for years. Didn’t he say in an interview he would like to play an Ultramarine?

Better than Netflix. Or what Apple did to Foundation.

Amazon has a pretty good track record: Good Omens, Expanse, Tales from the Loop, The Boys, Fallout.

Amazon did Fallout and it turned out good. Not like how The Witcher was treated at Netflix...

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not commenting on the quality I expect, just the company involved. I actively go out of my way to avoid Amazon as much as possible, so I will not be seeing this.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

While I agree with the sentiment:

  1. Torrents

  2. Shows like It's always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Orville are owned by Fox which feeds profit to Murdoch to support Fox News. That's far worse.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, exactly this.

I don't feel ok supporting Amazon or Fox.

And ofc rich things gonna have nice things (nice budget = at least nice looking results), but at the sauce it's just really really dirty money being fatter.
