Finals ratings prove it. Let’s recap:

1999- 29 million watched the year before and it dropped to 16 million. Though it was the first Finals after MJ retired so can’t fault the Spurs for that.

2003- 15.7 million watched the Lakers sweep the Nets the year before. Drops to 9.9 million viewers

2005- 18 million watched Lakers/Pistons the year before. Down to 12.5 million for this one

2007- 13 million watched Heat/Mavs the year before. Down to 9.3 million for this juggernaut

2013 and 2014- 16.9 million watched Heat/Thunder in 2012. 2013 actually went up to 17.5 million, but 2014 went back down to 15.5 million

So in essence, why do fans seem to loathe the Spurs? And I can only imagine how much the NBA loved having ratings drop whenever they made it.

[–] Longjumping_Fig1489@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

because we were bandwagoning the heatles!

Nah, nothing against the spurs at all idk

[–] thesch@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Are you really confused as to why Finals that had the Shaq/Kobe Lakers got better ratings than Finals that had the Big Fundamental?

[–] DownWithFlairs@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Less marketable stars

Smaller TV market

That’s about it

[–] deemerritt@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Literally all of these finals are like "Why didnt the spurs have as many viewers as the Lakers or MJ?"

[–] DownWithFlairs@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

OP clearly has no idea how many goddamn people live in LA/California

Better than historically bad

[–] bloodmuffins793@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

They were boring as hell for a long time. I think a lot of younger fans assume they played like the “beautiful game” 2012-2014 team their entire run. But most of the Duncan era they played slow, low-scoring games and ran their offense through Timmy in the post, which was just not that fun to watch.

They also eliminated more exciting teams like the Suns in the playoffs, which didn’t do them any favors.

They were also pretty dirty (especially Bruce Bowen) but would get treated like choir boys by the media. That was annoying.

It’s more disinterest than hate for all the reasons people have already said. It would actually be better if they were hated, people who hate the Lakers would still tune in to see them in the finals if for nothing else than to watch them loose

[–] hitmantb@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Small market obviously, can not compete with LA. Also had small market opponents other than NY.

Viewers are fine vs Heat.

[–] MitchLGC@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You're confusing hate with indifference.

The ratings were lower because less casual fans cared about the Spurs.

Hate actually INCREASES ratings because people will tune in wanting to see a hated team lose.

[–] pollinium@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I hate them, I'm not indifferent

They tank 3 times and get the 1st pick 3 times? The Wolves have a long, proud history of being bad, and we only got the 1st pick TWO times (as the worst team in the league each time)

[–] yarn_install@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Not to mention they got generational talent with each of those picks.

[–] Nuclearsunburn@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

San Antonio isn’t exactly a huge NBA market.

Tim Duncan has a boring personality.

As /u/grantforthree mentioned, the teams they played were also mostly small market teams without huge stars outside of the 3 LeBron matchups. Nobody was tuning in for Spurs-Pistons or Spurs-Nets.

[–] Rahnamatta@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Tim Duncan has a boring personality.

How can you say that? Do you know him?

[–] Nuclearsunburn@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Nope and that’s the issue right? He has basically zero public persona.

[–] MasterTeacher123@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Not watching you means hate?

[–] EdgePunk311@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Cause of their big ole women

[–] ManInShowerNumber3@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

More apathetic than hate. If they hated the Spurs they would’ve probably watched.

[–] junahn@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Its not about hate. Its just being ignorant

[–] kuliebop@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Hate is not the same as apathy.

They were labelled as dull because of the uncontroversial star players of two consecutive eras - Robinson and Duncan (cue the Duncan Robinson jokes).

[–] Infinite-Material-97@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

As a Spurs fan, I’ll take the championships over better ratings

[–] Thunderhorse74@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

This is a much bigger factor than people realize. Of course, who wants to be in Minneapolis on a Tuesday night in February either? A number of teams and their cities fit this, but with the Spurs being so good for so long, they had more nationally televised games and more compelling reason to be included in discussions, features, and interviews...except with that, people in the media thought they already knew all there is to know about them, so there were fewer fresh stories, new insights into the team.

When they returned to contention in 2012 a completely reinvented team with an updated style of play but with the same faces, I think the tendency was to retread the old narrative and "hey, its these fucking guys again." Roll some highlights from 2003 and a six year old interview where Tim Duncan says 7 words and never changes expression.

[–] BandOfDonkeys@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I hated them after 05 but then grew to like them because they were a just different version of my team.

[–] Ladnil@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Jesus fucking Christ. Which fan base doesn't have a "why does everyone hate us so much?" complex. I want to be a fan of that team.

[–] goodnsaultey@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] Ladnil@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Love it. I'm a bulls fan now

[–] Weary_Concentrate_22@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Media didn't know how to sell them, and there are more Lakers fans than any other team, because of how big their state is, especially before the Warriors took off. Lakers will always have more views than any other team, Spurs have very few American fans and have to share Texas with two other teams who have fans that have experienced winning at the highest level.

[–] richard_golbes@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Because the fans are either Europeans who of course decide to be Spurs fans and then obnoxiously dog-whistle about “culture” and playing the “right way” or Americans who decide to be Spurs fans and then obnoxiously dog-whistle about “culture” and playing the “right way”.

[–] Hurricane_08@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This may come as a shock to you, but most of the world doesn’t care about anything that happens in San Antonio, Texas.

[–] Conn3er@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Thank god for that

[–] 480AHole@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Robert Horry. Manure Gibobili. Bruce Bowen.

[–] adventureland8@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

For me, as stupid as it sounds......I think the whole black and silver/white color scheme makes for a boring watch. The Spurs, Nets, Raiders are all super boring teams to watch. If I'm watching a sports event as a neutral fan.....I tend to enjoy more visually stimulating uniforms and logos. Kind of weird I guess.

[–] WTFisaCelsius@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The Duncan era Spurs is my favorite team of all time. Casual fans found them boring because they didn't play flashy. No alley-oops, very few dunks. Just tons of ball movement.

[–] nolimit_788@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I think they just don't care

[–] Boomhauer_007@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The media convinced everyone “they were boring” and it worked beautifully

[–] nio151@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Why do you equate viewership with hate?

[–] Samsonite901@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

There’s clearly a lack of fans if you are going by ratings. There’s no relation to hate. This post is dumb.

[–] BocchiLover@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Fuck you, that's why.

[–] OlTommyBombadil@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I don’t know if I’ve ever met anyone who hates the Spurs.
