Marcus Smart previously has also said "No one cares about that" in reference to the in-season tournament during media day. Is the fact that there are no stakes taking away from this new event?

Not sure why they're being so petulant about it, like spoiled children. I'm sorry you can't rest 8 games into the season (not at JB specifically).

I, for one, am 100% towards doing something, anything, that is a step towards making games before January matter more.

[–] Folk-Herro@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Wasn’t there a bunch of collective games last week during the games? I thought it was a fun time

[–] Shingorillaz@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Isn't Jaylen the smart athlete? He should understand the purpose of the tournament and why players need to at least pretend and market it.

[–] ComoEstanBitches@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Give the winner of the tourney (which doesn't count as a regular season game/stat) up 1-0 in the first round of that years playoff. And if that winning team doesn't make the playoffs, give them one extra lottery ball. These players make so much more money going deep in the playoffs

[–] Regex00@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Silver gonna be sitting these men down and having a chat about good PR for the league and how it affects their bank accounts lol

[–] cathysampson69@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This is the same type of guy whose mad when the boss orders pizza. Most people are like “cool, pizza.” And then one guy is like “why should I even care about pizza? It’s not even my favorite.” Like just try not to be miserable for a second.

[–] Apostinggod@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Smart players would want this to be successful, especially when they share revenue and TV contracts are coming. Jaylen got his bag though.

[–] onwee@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The stakes will get higher when teams realize they’re dead last in their group and/or during the knockout round.

Then lose jaylen, if you don't care don't even come. I'm sure the fans don't want to see players that aren't excited to play

nobody really knows if it’s a prestigious award or not yet, because this is the first year it has existed. i’m hoping my bucks win because i think it would be cool to win the first in-season tournament, and it would actually be even cooler if this ends up being the only one ever

To be honest if they want to make it more high stakes, winning the in season tournament and coming second should equal additional wins for regular season to potentially sway playoff seeding. For example winning the tournament gives 3 more wins and coming second gives 1. Given seeding can be changed even by one win, what better stakes would there be, and it’s not as if this would completely upset the NBA.

[–] WizSkinsNatsCaps@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s beyond dumb and will be gone in no time just like the all star changes.

[–] rs521@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Jaylen as in jaylen brown?

I bet the players on better teams would kinda want to ignore this tournament, because they can easily be bounced by a lesser team in one night.

But players on lower teams, who have no hope of beating the elite teams in a 7 game series, might see this as their only chance to win something.

[–] Lake_Shore_Drive@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

As a fan I didn't care, but after attending one game I wanty boys to win.

I this just an extra little competition to have.

Why do teams exist? To compete. Just something fake to root for, like every single sports outcome

[–] teraken@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The wildest part about this comment section IMO are all the fans who have convinced themselves that somehow having the "in-season tournament" label is why the games last Friday were great, as if it had any effect at all whatsoever.

why would any players care? this is something adam silver did for the fans, it’s most likely corny to a lot of players especially older guys

everyone says bench guys and coaches would be more interested in the money but they’re not the ones playing big minutes in the tournament, the starters are..

[–] doodypoo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If the NBA wants this to be an event, I think they need to make it an event. Open the regular season with the tournament and have all the teams play in one city like All-Star. Doesn’t need the fanfare of All-Star, but make it an all day event every day for a week Or however long it takes and no other games take place after the elimination rounds.

The players will care about spotlight. Maybe don’t even count it towards the regular season standings, but make it a tiebreaker. If two teams end the season with 42 wins, have their Tournament record be a tiebreaker.

[–] thatisgangster@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

if they get fined I swear to god. fuck this dumbass tourney

[–] RODjij@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If I made close to a hundred mil in earnings like a lot of these guys I'd be happy to play every single game I can.

[–] matticans7pointO@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'd imagine the players on the minimum probably case. Kind of sad the high paying guys don't care when winning would put valuable money in the hands of their end of bench teammates.

[–] HoyaDestroya33@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Why are players so against this? Tradition takes time. This is just a regular season game true but it's a chance to earn more money for yourself and for your team. Big contract guys probably don't care as it's pennies on the dollar but those 2 way players and minimum salary guys probably do.

[–] Pro_phet@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Theyre saying it doesnt matter to them but i felt like the first tourney games were more competitive then the regular games

[–] EmmitSan@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If I were Silver, I would be handing out fines for this stuff

These are regular season games. That is the floor. Even if you cared zero about the in-season tournament, you should care, because it still counts as a regular season game. And frankly, since there is real money attached to winning the IST, you should care a non-zero amount about it, even if it is a small amount.

So, now, it may be true that you don't actually care about regular season games. But come on, you cannot allow your players to say that shit out loud when you are charging $100 for nosebleed tickets and $5k for courtside. Come on. Enforce some discipline for the sake of the product.

[–] Blunted-Shaman@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s not even extra games. So these dudes getting paid millions of dollars are pissed about the life they chose? Be adults. You got more money coming down the pipeline after the new tv rights are negotiated, but let’s not even try to give fans a reason to watch. Nah, better to load manage the fuck out of everything and complain about how the regular season doesn’t matter.

Jaylen should be excited as fuck for every opportunity he gets to dribble with his left hand.

[–] Maydietoday@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If Jokic said this it’d be all kekeke’s and glazing

[–] ConstantineMonroe@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

These players are so fucking entitled. God forbid the league does something for the fans. These athletes don’t realize that the ONLY reason they are multi millionaires is because the fans care. They play a children’s game. They aren’t doing anything productive for society. They aren’t doctors, engineers, construction workers, cooks, etc. They aren’t providing a mandatory service for society to function. They play a game that was literally invented by a doctor who wanted children to get more exercise. The only reason they are where they are is because the fans care. I hate this entitled attitude where they don’t give a fuck about the fans. It’s also why I hate load management.

[–] NoPickles@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Wild Idea.

Pre-season is replaced with Tournament + foreign teams.

[–] atlfalcons33rb@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Lmao fans are incredibly soft, by this point you should know most athletes don't enjoy the game it's just something they are good at and can make a lot of money. There is no logical reason to be excited about an in season tournament. Everything a player does is based on how they perform in the post season when it comes to money and legacy.

[–] Jack_M_Steel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think it’s interesting that some players say they don’t care. It’s something different, has stakes, and you’d think players would have some competitiveness to win another trophy

I’m not familiar with sports that have this, but a lot of esports mid season tournaments aren’t just ignored

[–] dontwasteink@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

To make it interesting, the two finalists for the in season tournament gets the OPTION to go up one spot in the standings for playoffs seeding, AFTER the Play-In determines the initial seeding.

This would be huge for teams that want to pick what team they want to face in the first round.

[–] LetsGetSomeChickenn@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This shit is pointless players dont care about this its a joke. Shits gone after this season or the next watch.

[–] Tantle18@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

There needs to be an actual reward. Like getting an automatic playoff bid or something

[–] AthKaElGal@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

since he doesn't fucking care, he should just sit and let the bench guys win the pot money.

what a fucking selfish prick. he got his, so ofc he doesn't care a win will help his team mates.

[–] Still_Level4068@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

sounds like a douche

[–] L_Moo_S@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Jaylen can fuck off

After supporting the bs outside the barclays centre and not having to be accountable for it

The worst type of pseudo intellectual just cos he took some bs classes at cal

[–] ClickElectronic@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Having every round other than the finals be a regular season game raises the floor on the tournament (so teams aren't treating it like a preseason exhibition), but lowers the ceiling. There's nothing unique going on other than different court designs, it's just games that they would have played anyways.

[–] Wjourney@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No shit lol he just signed for 60 million a year. Ask Payton Prichard and I’m sure he feels different.

[–] Owenclimbs@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

But wait, Reddit told me to give it a chance!

[–] K1NG2L4Y3R@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

They should open it up. Make it like a Champions League type thing. Give NBA teams an automatic bye and then have the rest of the world duke it out. Then once it’s set have it be single elimination and maybe the winning team gets to host the all star game or something.

Seeing how the players reacted to when Noah questioned the NBA team being world champions maybe you get more effort from the players because of pride. Add a big pool of money and all star game hosting and maybe they’ll care. And if they don’t it’s not like it would hurt anything. This brings more eyes worldwide and gives more incentives to win.

[–] Tsunami-Papi_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

bro always wants 2 b cool so bad

[–] _Jaeko_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't see why anyone should care outside of the 11-18 spots and the staff. $300k is a lot to us, but to guys who have a contract and are established this is essentially like a $300 bonus to them, just a drop in the water. If the NBA can market it only the NBA profits until a new CBA deal, 2/3 of the actual talent bringing in that money don't really need it or seem to want it. Tanking teams would rather have a chance at a high lotto pick than try for x amount of tourney games for a small bonus. That eliminates a good 4-5 teams at least. Every other team that is jockeying for a better seed would already want to win these games. Not to mention the average fan won't understand the tourney until it's the last days of it heading into the elim rounds. I don't think it's a horrible idea or plan but there's not much reason to care about it outside of a small bonus. Hell even the NBA doesn't seem to care a whole lot with the awful floors that come with it.

[–] FriendlyPipesUp@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Seems pretty ignorant of him tbh. He’s got actual financial incentives to care but idk if he knows that

[–] BigPoppa23@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Real hoopers would be excited at the idea that level of play might be higher for these games and getting a chance to show out while more fans are watching.

Also, I dont buy the 500k prize not meaning anything. Even if you are a millionaire, who doesn't want an extra 500k? That's found money that youweren'tt planning on. You could guiltlessly blow it on anything, take on a high-risk/high reward investment, or buy some gifts for family members.

[–] GatsbyKanye@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Lmao WHY do they have to act like they care if they do not care. It’s not like they are actively dissing it and it’s not like they are gonna skip the games. Y’all act like they owe us feigning excitement for something they fundamentally don’t understand. NBA players are obligated to play the games. Nowhere in their contract does it state they have to pretend to be more excited about the same games they would literally already be playing but on different courts, that most of us agree look tacky. I think it’s FAN entitlement that makes us think the players should always act according to our standards when in fact they are also people going to a job. The commissioner of the league is literally shilling out for SKIMS on TMZ but y’all wanna be mad the players aren’t keeping the same energy for a tournament that ultimately probably won’t affect most of their careers or paychecks.

[–] Mental_Reaction4697@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This guy is such an edge lord.

He's getting $300 million from the NBA, and not only will he not do the bare minimum to promote the league's newest endeavour, he goes out of his way to shit on it.

And for what reason? If it wasn't an in-season tournament game, it would be just another regular season game in November - and while that's an opportunity for him to go out there and make hundreds of thousands of dollars, well, it's nothing for him to get excited about.

Horrible representative for the NBA. It's one thing for Bones Hyland to say he doesn't know what's going on (completely ridiculous, but at least he's a young guy coming off the bench), but for a guy with a $300 million contract to speak this way is embarrassing for the league.

What would be nice is if a player said "I noticed that there were a handful of close games on the first night of the tournament last week, which is always fun for the fans - maybe not as fun for the players, you know, we like to win by more than a few points, but a fun way to get the tournament started for the fans, and you know, I'm looking forward to going out there and putting on a show tonight".

Is that hard?

And I don't understand why he's got a bad attitude about it in the first place.

Does he not like playing basketball in the NBA?

[–] markevbs@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love Jaylen but that’s a dick answer. If he’s part of players union leadership he should be all for supporting things tha will directly put more money in their pockets.

[–] financial_goth@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Everyone's to cool for the tournament now.

In a couple years it will be different I guarantee.

[–] MooMooHeffer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The thing about this tournament is it can’t be forced and it can’t be made out to be more than what it is in terms of creating NBA champion excitement. Just let it be.

As an NBA fan I found myself browsing the in-season tournament groups/standings last Friday. I will do the same thing again this Friday.

The idea is intriguing enough for me to keep up with when it comes to seeing box scores/updates. However, the NBA isn’t my primary sport I follow so to actually care and make time to watch the games (compared to say the playoffs) isn’t something I’m thinking about doing in the slightest.

Don’t make it bigger than what it should be.

[–] Dad_Control@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think the tournament is also stupid if it doesn’t provide a basic incentive relative to the playoffs. Asking the players to “get up” for the early season when their primary focus is on developing chemistry and working out the kinks in the offense and defensive schemes is dumb.

Now gifting the bracket winners with an at-minimum playoff spot and the overall winner a guaranteed sixth or better spot? That would be worth the extra effort in preseason.

Don’t expect January and February to not suck butts with load management though.
