Why the fuck would PBS care anymore since the GOP is cutting all of their funding?

[–] markovs_gun@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

Worthless spineless cowards like this are worse than the fascists because they're the ones who allow a minority to rule over them.

[–] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago

Can I complain too? Because the GOP is turning kids to suicide because they are having a miserable life for not being allowed who they are. You really have the mental capacity of a can of mountain dew if you think "gay" is an option, a choice, something which can change. The only thing that can change are the limited dumb fucks who believe in an imaginary guy in the clouds with super powers (which he only uses for crual things somehow) by stopping abusing others and forcing children into their expectations. It's literally child abuse what they are doing. And they are making the rules, instead of being trialed.

I've been predicting since Trump was re-elected that within four years, LGBT content will be purged from streaming services. Netflix and Disney will probably end up doing it before they're forced to.

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Do you want to know something? I never thought we'd be back to the old "If kids see queer people, they'll turn queer" arguments.

[–] PumaStoleMyBluff@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They never left =/ you may have just temporarily disconnected from the media that promote them.

[–] DeathsEmbrace@lemm.ee 1 points 6 days ago

It wasn't a vocal majority in the government until now.

[–] Flickerby@lemm.ee 11 points 6 days ago

If media can turn someone gay than rationally the inverse should be true as well so why are there still gay people when the media is 99% non gay stuff?

[–] wolfeh@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago

Are these "erased" episodes available anywhere else? I wonder if they're archived anywhere. I'd be curious to see what all the fuss is about.

Trans identies must be accept as valid period the end but I find drag often veers into “woman face” territory and it’s done for entertainment not as an expression of an authentic self, not that drag is inherently wearing woman face but a lot of performers absolutely take it there. I don’t want my children, especially my daughter watching content that exaggerates my female features for entertainment and dehumanizes women into nothing more than a caricature

[–] mriormro@lemm.ee 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Did someone let JK Rowling out of her cave?

[–] Zenith@lemm.ee 0 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Am I wrong? What’s the point of drag as entertainment other than to dress up as a caricature of a woman? Sorry I don’t like my identity to be used for mocking and/or entertainment. If a person has a female identity because that’s the truest form of themselves I fully support that but if you’re dressing up as a mocking version of something for entertainment it’s not at all the same thing and it’s not ok. There’s a reason you didn’t address what I said and just hopped onto essentially calling me a TERF, I may be an RF but I am not TE

Claiming to be pro-trans rights and hating actual feminist points is peak hypocrisy

[–] ImADifferentBird@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You couldn't be more wrong. Drag is often about getting in touch with one's feminine side, and many trans and nonbinary folks use drag as a vehicle to explore their identities. It's very much an expression of an authentic self as much as it is entertainment.

Also, drag kings are very much a thing, exploring masculinity from a feminine starting point.

[–] Zenith@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

If it’s not for entertainment that’s fine, which I do point out, that it’s not universal. There’s no difference in my mind between dressing up as a caricature of a woman to entertain people than there is dressing up as a caricature of any other discriminated against class for entertainment. If a person simply wants to cross dress and it’s not done with outrageous makeup, cartoonish physical proportions, over the top generalizations of women more power to them but yes, lots of drag absolutely includes the things I mentioned and no it’s not ok to put on woman face and shuck and jive for entertainment

Pretty misleading. This isn’t “PBS,” it’s one member station doing it to their local content.

PBS gives their members freedom. Can’t help it if some are conservatives or panicking over loss of local funding from their local conservative govt

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 52 points 1 week ago

As the Trump administration intensifies its attacks, PBS has bent the knee in another way to dampen potential blowback by removing a scene in an Art Spiegelman documentary in which the graphic novelist Spiegelman discusses an anti-Trump cartoon. PBS also pulled a gaming documentary with trans themes, only to relist it after The Atlantic asked about its deletion.

Sounds like it’s not just the local station engaging in shenanigans.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 68 points 1 week ago (6 children)

God dammit, PBS, right before pride month? They already took your fucking money. Why should my trans ass be donating to make up for it?

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 37 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wasn’t PBS, it was WNET. An affiliate.

An affiliate who has done shitty things before, like bend the knee to the Koch brothers.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Is POV (the PBS series) not a nationwide, PBS produced program rather than an individual station program? The Atlantic article mentioned at the end talks about POV having a trans gamer themed episode canceled because of potential backlash.

As a Jew, I was exposed to a lot of Christmas movies and media with Christian values as a child. Guess what? Still Jewish.

Also Bill Nye and Mr. Wizard taught me lots of science. Guess what? Still failed chemistry and still dumb as fuck.

Fucking cowards.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 55 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm going to need a list of every person that was turned LGBT+, by a song, tv show, video game, etc. Conservatives are such hypocrites and liars. You CAN'T turn someone gay. If you could, the whole fucking planet would be gay.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 1 week ago

i had a whole joke mostly written out about religion turning people conservative. I'm so tired

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago (3 children)

So.... watching fox news can make my trans and gay friends hetero and alter their gender? I'm doubtful.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 23 points 1 week ago

No, but it can make them hateful and alter their grasp on reality.

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

It'll absolutely make them self hating. Pretty sure that's been proven repeatedly in the GOP

[–] raltoid@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

When they say "turn", they mean "learn".

They want their children to live a life of denial and never learn that they are allowed to feel the way they do.

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago

I was at a confirmation to a boy a couple of days ago, where the uncle is gay. The uncle hadde a speech that started with "When [name] was in kindergarten, he said 'I want a boyfriend, like my uncle Tom has, because he's so happy'. Damn, that was funny. Especially since the boy is as straight today. There's NOTHING wrong with children being exposed to different people. Fuck the GOP and their hateful minds. Let people be people, you closeted bigots!

[–] DizzoMyNizzo@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago

Why PBS, WHY?

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

We used to get excited and sang along to Culture Club music videos when they came on TV. Never once wanted to dress like Boy George.

Myself and everybody I knew thought Boy George was a woman.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Some of us did, but it still didn't destroy the world or hurt anyone at all.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Some of us did, and nothing happened, nothing changed. At worse, people learned to be more tolerant, oh my word

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

I used to have my sister put makeup on me, and use shopping bags to make "dresses" which we'd then stuff with fake boobs. I thought it was awesome and great fun creativity. I'm straight AF, but still flamboyant AF. You are what you are.

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Yup, you do you and I'll do me and we'll live happily side by side.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 week ago

Honestly fucking stupid.

You think these hogs care that you removed the content? It's not about the content! They just hate public media! You can never conform to their standards because their standards are solely about privatisation.

With friends like these...

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 week ago

Is that also why they don’t like black people in movies? They don’t want them turning their kids black?

[–] dinren@discuss.online 13 points 1 week ago

What about gay content?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Bert and Ernie tried to make me gay. And don’t even get me started on that Count guy. Like, is that seriously what he’s wearing?

Cookie Monster gave me an eating disorder.

[–] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 days ago

Ernie is the coziest of bottoms.

[–] Burninator05@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's called fashion, honey. You wouldn't understand it.

[–] manxu@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

Oh, the joys of being old! I remember the GWB years, when PBS was pressured into a Both Viewpoints era and suddenly they had "experts" extolling the virtues of Trickle Down Capitalism.

If you stand for something, like PBS has, it's always a terrible idea to cater to the opposite. Liberal law firms that settled with the Trump administration have found that out, Target is finding it out, and PBS might do, as well.

[–] poppichew@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

I want to get grumpy here and say that watching their edutainment documentary on ____ (fill in the blank queer subject because I don't remember the focus), that introduced me to Christine Jorgensen and had clips of her performing made my LIFE! I think they were from the Library of Congress or something, and who the hell knows if they even exist anymore. She did a cover of Welcome to my World that took the tune from a old crooner song to this upbeat fun and flirty jam and it was absolutely mesmerizing. That was just a ten second clip too, but it was so wonderful. I had another grumpy pants moment tonight when I talked about how happy people are post-transitioning and how frustrating it is to me that people can see transjoy and think "I want to smash that." I mean I have met so many transfolx who have this deep seated awful pain that pretty much saps the life from them until they get the right support they need. It's like night and day. I just don't get it. We don't recruit, even though we used to chant it to scare the straights. Really, we just make people more aware of the possibilities of who they could be if they want to be said way. Youth explores, I've known a LUG or three in my lifetime. I think exposure to a wide range of folks in media helps people. I know I was happy the first time I saw someone who looked like me on a TV, and it damn near took 25 years or so to do it. So yeah, it's important. I really hate this happened, but hopefully they've just archived them for later. You can't fuck with the bag in this world.
