Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I'm not likely to buy this game, but I'm still more likely to buy it than willingly visit Florida (I'll only go if I get sent to the concentration camp)

Hell yea. Playing a woman means I can look at a woman all the time I play.

Why would I want to stare at a man the entire game long.

[–] CodingCarpenter@lemmy.ml 31 points 5 days ago (7 children)

This is the oldest excuse in the book. Just admit you want to be a girl this time. There's no shame in it. Or any reason at all to say "hur hur I want look at lady, boys gross"

Who even looks at the models? Enjoy the works around the character

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 35 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I play female characters without any desire to be a woman. I don’t identify with the characters I play just as a ventriloquist doesn’t identify with his puppet.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Having met a number of ventriloquists, they often identify with their puppets an unhealthy amount.

Sorry, but guy asses aren't as pretty as girl asses. Im a bi girl though, so probably not representative of the population.

[–] Ansis100@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I mean, girl asses are much prettier than guy asses. I'm a straight guy, though, so probably an even worse representative of the population.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar....

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I am legit one of the men who likes to play as a woman in games from time to time without any excuse. I have always been a maverick. I always like to go against the perceived norm and I enjoy doing something different. Playing as a woman for me is always spicing things up and a break from the usual man things, whatever that is.

That said, FemShep is the only Shep!

I always play female if I can and you are right, for the longest time i wish I were a girl. Not so sure today but I wouldn't mind clothing to be less restrictive. Women can wear all kind of nice clothes and men just... Jeans and a t-shirt it is.

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Wear what you want sug, I support you.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I agree with you on the clothing, but it isn't a strict requirement. I've been wanting to get a kilt for the longest time, but I haven't committed. I've never had issues with my gender as a man, but I do want more clothing options easily available and more socially acceptable.

To be fair, that is basically describing the beginning few missions of San Andreas anyway.

[–] Emi@ani.social 17 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The best GTA imo. I love how you can change your character by doing things, binge eating/hitting the gym/etc.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (4 children)

That's an amazing RPG mechanic that I'm amazed that didn't become the norm in RPGs (wonder if they patented it or something).

The more you run the faster you get, the more you fight the stronger you get.

You get progress in an intuitive, and rewarding way. No menus.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

The more you run the faster you get, the more you fight the stronger you get.

That's how final fantasy 2 and every elder acrolls game works

[–] Alaknar@sopuli.xyz 5 points 4 days ago

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon (also known as "Skyrim but it's Totally Not Warhammer Fantasy with a little bit of Scorn sprinkled on top") has that mechanic too.

[–] PraiseTheSoup@midwest.social 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The more you run the faster you get

The Elder Scrolls

the more you fight the stronger you get

literally every RPG ever made

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Not really.

In most RPGs, you get skill points you can then allocate in a menu.

In San Andreas, it was automatic, you run a lot, your running/stamina increases, you punch a lot, your strength goes up...

No menus

[–] PraiseTheSoup@midwest.social 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm well aware of how it worked in San Andreas. Fable 3 tried to eliminate menus and it was by far the worst game in the series because of it.

The Elder Scrolls does this too. You increase skills through use which increases their effectiveness (damage for melee skills). Even when leveling up has a menu for attribute allocations, the skills are mostly automatic.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago

They mean that GTA:SA did not have visual indicators like menus and stat system showing your progress.

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

Kingdom Come Deliverance does this pretty well.

a few years ago I've heard this straight guy give the advice of "of course I'm picking the girl in a third person view game. i'm not gonna stare at a man's behind for hours of playing"

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 30 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I alternate between "play the guy because more relatable" and "play the girl because ass"

Then again, my friend also used the "I don't wanna watch a guy all day" reasoning when I asked him and well, now we all know she wanted to be a girl all along.

[–] blackstampede@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 days ago

The real gender was the one she made along the way.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 14 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Another one that irks me for some reason is that a LOT of games get the MOST boring, cookie-cutter action hero voice actor for the dude. I just can't get invested when "me" in the game sounds so unenthusiastic. I tend to pick the female character/voice option just bc they seem to put more effort into it. See: CP2077, most bioware games.

[–] coriza@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I picked the female character on cp2077 on a whim and thank God for that. The story is so much better with a female protagonist (at least until now, I haven't finished yet) and V Friendship with Jackie is much more sweet like an unlikely duo. The voice actor is also great. I saw some clips of male V and it not even comparable how different the game feels.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I've played through as male and female, they did such an amazing job making the writing and delivery different for Johnny when talking to V.

You can tell he's a misogynist.

I have played through Cyberpunk just once so far, as female V. I've rarely felt so comfortable in a character's shoes. It felt fresh

[–] PraiseTheSoup@midwest.social 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

This is 100% the case in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Male player character voice sounds absolutely ridiculous, like Christopher Nolan's Batman but even worse.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 5 points 5 days ago

Oh man yeah, I didn't even bother playing the male protag since I heard Kassandra was the canonical or intended choice. Then I heard Alex or whoever and was so glad I didn't have to listen much longer.

[–] Kinokoloko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 5 days ago

I used that excuse when I was younger and more insecure. Now I just own it and say I do it because I like to play as women more than men. I'm a man IRL, but sometimes I wanna try on the other sex

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I coped like this when I was younger too. Now I say I play the character that I would most want to be. I'd love to be a super fucking hot girl who commits crimes. Unironically, it appeals to the male fantasy lmao

If one transitions, she can be a super hot girl who commits crimes in numerous countries by simply existing

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 50 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Florida be swimming with the fishes soon dear, very soon.

Never pay ownership money to rent a game someone else owns and can steal from you at any time. The only games that exist are those you can play in 50 years on a whim because you fucking bought them.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 41 points 5 days ago (1 children)

My plan is to play gta 6 in 50 years so I can visit Miami when it no longer exists 😁

When GTA6 becomes a period piece:

"Oh! Remember when cars used to look like that?"
"Remember when cars used to be above water?"
"It's so dry here!"

[–] syreus@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (5 children)

The weather is going to continue to get worse but I keep seeing people perpetuating the idea that sea levels rising will be significant enough to put Florida "underwater". Orlando is 112 ft over sea level. Sea level is estimated to rise 10-12 inches over the next 25 years. The Everglades and the Keys will be in trouble but the majority of the state have been built up off sea level because of storm surge. In the grand scheme of things I would be more worried to live in tornado alley or the arid areas like Arizona.

I plan to move to the Canadian border one day to hopefully put some roots in the future green zone.

I'm at 35ft above sea level at the moment and wish I could go a day without seeing something hateful about my state. It's frustrating enough that I have to live around all these conservative geezers. It would be really nice if some aging millennials would start a demographic shift. It's not so long ago that Florida was a swing state.

[–] Glitterbomb@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (3 children)

You picked the only real landlocked city in Florida to mention sea level? 2,400,000 Florida residents live less than 4 feet above high tide. 75% of the state lives on the coast. I'm here too, and half the roads have drainage problems when it rains. Planes couldn't land at the ft Lauderdale Airport in 2023 because the runways flooded. It's gonna be a mess man

BEING NICE TO WOMEN IS THE MOST BAD*SS THING YOU CAN DO

[–] gerryflap@feddit.nl 1 points 3 days ago

Doing girly things us the most sigma male thing one can do. Wearing Neal polish, skirts etc shows you're not insecure about your masculinity.

Or something idk :3

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Hype is real but GTAs usually set the standard for open world games and alway advance the genre. We'll see but excited to see what they got going.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 44 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Idk. They haven’t advanced their shooting mechanics in over 20 years. They have advanced predatory anti-consumer practices though.

The narratives are generally good but I’m of the mind that I don’t want satire when living in such a shitty and insane time.

If I get a chance to play for free, I’ll take it but I’m not giving rstar or take2 any money.

games and alway advance the genre

what was groundbreaking in gta v from a gameplay perspective? Switching characters?

I was playing as the flash in the saints row series at this point.
