"evaluate" in this instances means "fire". Why pretend otherwise?

[–] shoutouttojsquad@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It's a bit mean to Ron to announce in Week 12 you'll be firing him at the end of the season

[–] akran47@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Does "unforeseen circumstances" in this case mean "an alien race steals the power of NFL superstars and challenges Tom Brady and the Looney Tunes to a game, somehow allowing the Commanders into the postseason and preventing an alien Danny DeVito from kidnapping Bugs and Daffy?"

[–] PopcornDrift@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

There’s no advantage to saying that right now even if that’s exactly what’s gonna happen. Always leave yourself wiggle room lol

[–] down42roads@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Its a much nicer report than "we aren't going to fire him yet"

[–] bigmistaketoday@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

He gone. Washington should do a complete rebuild/rebrand under the new owner. They have no identity. Am I alone in that aside from Howell, I can’t name another Washington player? And since I’m total casual, I only know Howell from reading this sub lol. I guess they still have “scary Terry,” but I don’t hear much about him even.

[–] Rymasq@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

One of Daron Payne or Jon Allen is probably on the PB this year

[–] username10400@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (10 children)

I am actually kind of surprised he has lasted this long. Rivera in Washington has probably been possibly the most unremarkable head coaching tenure I can recall in the NFL. It's almost like you forget he even exists at times

[–] Floridamanfishcam@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Hey maybe that's a step up from the embarrassment we are used to hearing about in Washington?

[–] ChiSp0@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

That’s what I was thinking. He isn’t terrible just checked out. He could be replaced with someone far worse…

[–] J-Fid@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

And that's all Snyder wanted when he hired him.

[–] captainsmoothie@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Snyder desperately needed someone with credibility, since his franchise had none.

Hey he won a division title, with a losing record which funny enough is the second time it happened to him but he did

[–] TheFencingCoach@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

I’m not surprised. I think Snyder favored him because he at least got the team to the playoffs in his first season. Scandal after scandal started hitting Snyder and I think he was happy with the stability Rivera brought.

With Harris coming on board, he’s probably going to want to start making his mark on the team, and my guess is in the next few years we’re going to see big changes to the team and organization to rid itself of the Snyder poison.

So I wasn’t surprised to see him retained this long, but I’d certainly be surprised if Harris doesn’t clean house after this season.

[–] way-too-many-napkins@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I mean, he got them to the playoffs at 7-9 lol. I’m not sure I’d feel good about that year as an owner

[–] JayJax_23@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (2 children)

It honestly set them back in a way. Had them drafting too late to get a QB and they had to spend 2 years in QB limbo trying Stopgaps that didn't work and relying on Heincke who is respectable but has a too weak of an arm to bring you over the jump

[–] IlliterateWinner@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Set them back because they missed out on drafting who? Mac Jones? Justin Fields? The only worthwhile qb in that draft was picked at the #1 spot

He’s a less memorable version of Jeff Fisher.

[–] dbniwo@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I mean Washington was a dumpster fire for a while. Rivera isn’t great but he’s a big step up from dumpster fire

[–] JEspo420@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

They are no better off with Ron then they were with Jay Gruden before him, at least Gruden has made the playoffs with a winning record, it’s the same dumpster fire just a different owner

Evaluate is a euphemism for fire

[–] iamofnohelp@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Evaluate --> mutually agree to part ways

[–] JBaldera27@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Rivera did a better job stabilizing behind-the-scenes chaos from Dan Snyder than he did as a Head Coach. Overall I think he’s leaving the organization in a better place than he found it. Hope he retires and rides off into the sunset with a positive overall record when all is said and done.

[–] markuspoop@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Hope he retires and rides off into the sunset with a positive overall record

At 102–97–2 that’s gonna be a close call.

[–] German_Irish_chicken@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

All we have to do is win 2 games

[–] ernie_mccracken@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Damn RIP Ron's positive record then I guess

[–] _The_Bear@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Gonna be a close call

I always see this but what exactly did he stabilize? We’re in a better spot as an organization because Satan is finally gone (which Ron had nothing to do with) but from a purely football operations standpoint we are in the exact same spot we were in when he took over, if not worse. The only saving grace is we may have found an answer at QB.

[–] Quirky_Scratch_1755@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I always see this but what exactly did he stabilize?

Redditor speak so they sound educated on the topic. Dude is the HC not the PR team.

[–] lOan671@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I wouldn’t say that because the media and even Ron himself have echoed the same sentiment. I’m just confused where it’s coming from because literally the only reason I have any more hope for this organization now than I did when he took over is Snyder being gone

[–] theordinarypoobah@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

That's what I was thinking. Jay Gruden was a stabilizing force when he took over, and he had a reasonable head coaching stretch. He took over at a time when Washington really needed some continuity at a minimum. Rivera's just been more of the same, just with better defenses instead of Gruden's offenses.

Incidentally, I'm surprise Gruden hasn't gotten another shot. I didn't think he did especially poorly as a HC, factoring in he was under Snyder.

Gone Rivera

[–] thisbechris@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

If I ever buy a business for 6 billion dollars and I don’t evaluate it (at least) every year please tell me I’m doing it wrong.

[–] trainsaw@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I feel like he had to know what he was getting into with Snyder, to an extent, but man he didn’t deserve the shit he had to deal with and the skeletons kept coming out of the closet. Feel bad for the guy, he seems like a genuinely good person

[–] heartbrooksbrain@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

There’s really no benefit to firing Rivera mid season. We all know he’s a lame duck at this point. There’s also nobody worthy of stepping in as interim coach on the roster. Del Rio? He’s part of the problem, not the solution. Appointing Bienemy as interim head coach would be setting him up to fail IMO.

[–] tj_hooker99@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

And what is gained by keeping him? Likely 7 more losses by season end.

Many talk of EB being coach next season. And clearly this team is a garbage fire, which is still very likely to be a garbage next year (rebuilds don't happen in an off-season). So what's the difference? If he can't manage six weeks in a bad situation, how does he manage for a whole season?

Is it right? Maybe not, but will the expectation of a coaching regime change be that the new coach is not evaluated until they have all "their" pieces in place. Nope, what can do you with what you got, now. Not in 5 years. This is how it has been. So if EB cannot handle a late season appointment to interm HC, he can go right out the door with the rest of them.

[–] brain_my_damage_HJS@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

“Likely 7 more losses by season end.”

Do you know who owns the Commanders? This is what he dreams about.

Losing to Tommy DeVito wasn’t an unforeseen circumstance?

[–] increasingrain@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

All-Pro looking Tommy DeVito.

I knew it was going to happen. Giants always seem to have our number dialed up. We can beat the 9-0 Eagles, but can't beat a struggling Giants team

Tank commander

[–] Quirky_Scratch_1755@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

What is there to evaluate? He should be canned so you can see what you have with Eric Bieniemy. It's been 4 years, 3 going

7-9

7-10

8-8-1

and now another season thats going to be under .500

[–] SweerBaby_Use1023@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s not a popular decision, but I agree with Harris on this one! You really can’t make any real changes until after the season anyway so why not let him finish the season? We all see where it’s heading, unless Rivera and Co pull off the biggest turnaround this franchise ever seen since 2012 when Washington was 3-6 and won 7 straight.

Translation: he gone
