Saleh is really good at losing

[–] SuperSecretestUser@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Gotta say the 2021 HC class feels a lot like the 21 QB draft class, albeit there's two guys here who are gonna be around the league for a long time to come whereas there's only one guy like that among the QBs. Lotta sure shots that turned out to not be sure shots whatsoever.

[–] BlackMathNerd@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (5 children)

Who’s the second 2021 QB who’s gonna be around for a while?

[–] SuperSecretestUser@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

There's not one, though Staley and Fields could somehow both end up staying on their respective teams for another year or two.

[–] infantinemovie5@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Staley could get another year solely for the fact that he has one more year on his contract.

Mac once he gets to be a bridge starter or backup on a team with an OL and receiving corps

[–] ColdSplit@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Watch him have a Geno Smith type resurrection once he is off of that horrible Pats offense. I can see him being a middle of the pack QB with a real OC, real oline and WRs who are actually better than practice squad level. Might be a good choice for the Browns if they can somehow get rid of Watson.

[–] Winterclaw42@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

IDK about that. I think he's seeing ghosts in the pocket and I'm not sure a new situation alone is going to help him.

[–] explodyboompow@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Mac has a long, Ryan Fitzpatrick-esque career ahead of him. Every year someone needs a 3k yd, 15td 10 int QB season.

The jets, for instance. They'd probably kill for Mac right now.

Fields and Lawrence.

Lawrence is the Jags guy for a while, and Fields feels like a guy who's going to thrive on a new team where the coach gets him, but probably never get them a Super Bowl win even though they come close. Think Tua.

Mills is the other one, but as a career back-up.

Wilson is ass, Jones is ass, and Lance may never get a chance to play.

Culley is such a prime example of a coach being hired to be fired.

[–] Vavent@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

An 65-year-old wide receivers coach for the team that was known to have notoriously bad wide receiver play. Nah, that hire was totally legitimate.

Another reminder why the NFL media and Reddit have no idea what they’re talking about. Out of our last 4 HC hires, Reid, Chip Kelly, Dougy P, and Sirianni, only Chip’s hire was met with praise and the other 3 were considered some of the worst/disappointing hires of the offseason.

[–] Weed_O_Whirler@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's true, his press conference was bad, and I think it's fine to make jokes about it. But the amount of people talking out of their ass about how that meant something about his ability to coach was just laughable.

[–] newrimmmer93@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Gannon was the same way for the cards and he’s been better than expected I think

[–] JebusChrust@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I looked up what I could find of Reddit's reactions to Chip Kelly being hired and it is mainly Philly fans being homers and saying that he is really smart and everyone else saying to pick up McCoy in fantasy and that he probably will bring new formations to the NFL but are skeptical of him seeing success. Doug Pederson looked like a mixed bag of people saying the Eagles basically wanted Andy Reid back, some saying they have no idea who he is, and Eagles fans hating it. Sirianni seems to have been a praised hire on Reddit.

[–] acoasterlovered@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Saleh if you get fired you’ll have a spot right here in Detroit!

[–] Jordanwolf98@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Who wtf is MCDC

[–] Anaphylactic-UFO@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Nick Sirianni - hard to knock him. Very successful.

Brandon Staley - ass.

Dan Campbell - I’m a bit more critical of Dan than most on r/nfl. I like his aggression, but I think they struck lightning by getting Ben Johnson and it’s unlikely to repeat when he becomes a HC. I think we start to see him falter once that happens and he eventually loses r/nfl’s undying support.

Arthur Smith - his teams have overperformed with him, however, I can see them moving on after this rough year. Cool offensive scheme, done a good job covering up gaps at QB, but it confuses me that he refuses to use any of his top 10 pick skill position players. Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson not producing more at this point is… just weird.

Robert Saleh - absolutely a victim of his organization. He’s proven more than I gave him credit for in SF that he can build an elite defense and bring out the most in guys on that side of the ball. The Rodgers trade was a good idea but my god every decision the FO made after that was terrible. Cook is washed, all of Rodgers’ friends are bad at football, and Hackett at OC is a joke. They set Saleh up to fail and didn’t get a QB after Rodgers was immediately.

Ultimately Saleh might be around the 15-20th best HC in the league, but he’s being sandbagged by Joe Douglass and the owner into looking worse.

Urban Meyer - Bobby Petrino type of bad.

David Culley - elite fall guy.

[–] CliffsOfMohair@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Smith’s teams are no longer over performing given the weakness of the NFCS

Idk how you can point out how stupid his refusal to use talented offensive players is while saying his scheme is cool and covering up a lack of talent. His “cool scheme” gets Jonnu Smith and Tyler Allgeier more touches than Pitts and Bijan. That’s just asinine

[–] Anaphylactic-UFO@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Smith’s teams are no longer over performing given the weakness of the NFCS

Right, but this is a 3 year sample size I’m talking about.

I feel like I said everything you’re saying already in my own post, yet you’re arguing with me about it. As if I didn’t say just that.

I think your point about Campbell is a bad one. Of course, Ben Johnson is excellent. Who hired him? Campbell. He moved on from and hired Ben Johnson after keeping him on staff after Patricia was fired.

An absolutely critical part of being a HC is hiring staff. Can’t take that away from Campbell. Johnson deserves credit for the offense and that’s it. We have no idea what he’ll do as a head coach. Campbell has done a great job with Detroit and deserves the credit I think you’re withholding.

[–] Anaphylactic-UFO@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yes. Credit to Dan Campbell for hiring Ben Johnson. It’s absolutely a notch in his belt that he hired Ben Johnson.

THAT DOES NOT MEAN HE IS GOING TO GET A BEN JOHNSON EVERY TIME HE HIRES SOMEONE.

Credit to Dan Quinn for hiring Kyle Shannahan to be his OC for the Falcons. That does not mean he will get Kyle Shannahan 2.0 when Kyle Shannahan eventually moves on to the 49ers.

Credit to Sean McDermott for hiring Brian Daboll. That does not mean the next guy he hires is Brian Daboll 2.0.

Credit to Mike Vrabel for hiring Arthur Smith. That does not mean the next guy he hires is Arthur Smith 2.0.

Yes, hiring a great staff is a skill. However, even if you’re great at it, you probably won’t be able to sustain it. There’s not enough great coaches available to do that. All of these HCs have proven they can make the right hire, but they haven’t proven they can do it over and over and over again as their OCs get poached.

[–] MikeTysonChicken@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (3 children)

The fuck is the point of this? He hasn’t even lost Ben Johnson yet. Plus he’s taken a losing ass culture and made it something fun. We have no idea what he will or won’t sustain over time. You’re just not giving him credit for what he’s done there no when no one has been able to do it so far

I honestly think Meyer is worse than Petrino and it’s not super close. Yes Petrino is obviously scummy yet he got legitimate bad roster luck and just checked out. Meyer was historically bad with reasonable talent, didn’t ever lose the locker room as he never even had it to with, has a long list of gaffes directly related to his coaching ability (being unprepared, kicking the kicker, having a meeting where he asked all his assistants to defend their resumes and proclaimed himself a “winner”, and bought an extra day before meeting with the team after he was caught dancing after losing the Cinci game). Plus another coach stepped in the next year and made the playoffs.

[–] Blutarg@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Dan Campbell has chained his regime to an anchor named Aaron Glenn, and won't last much longer unless he cuts loose.

[–] f_vile@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Why do you think it's the fault of the scheme instead of the personnel? Hutch hasn't taken the next step to be in the Maxx Crosby tier of playmaker (though I think he will at some point), Cambell has been looking rough, and the loss of key contributors in Moseley/Houston/CJGJ are difficult to overcome.

[–] Mitochondriu@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

most of the frustration stems from the fact that its been 3 years of awful defense, not just one season. i understand our lack of talent, but its not a good reflection on your defensive coach in any circumstance to have a 3 year stretch of bottom 5 defensive play

[–] LeFoogeboo@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

There have been a lot of improvements over last year in all honesty

Secondary and Dline have had a tough stretch of weeks but they are so banged up it's to be expected

At least they aren't out here allowing two hundred yard rushes and like three hundred passing yards in a single game

With all that said though I'm still of the opinion they just need a new mind on defense than Glenn

[–] Meadows14@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I kind of think Saleh has had no chance at all tbh.

Of course he could have done some stuff better, but his defense is elite. If you put Saleh as HC on the Chargers this season with Moore at OC we probably go 12-5.

[–] Nightgasm@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Saleh is a good coach but he and the Jets front office utterly blew it when Rodgers went down. They knew they had nothing with Wilson or Boyle and could have easily upgraded. Garrett Wilson was rookie of the year and primed for a break out. Breeze Hall would have been rookie of the year til his injury. They didn't need a star QB, they just needed someone who could be average. Say someone like Matt Ryan who may be a shell of what he was but still understands an offense. Or get Tannehill who is on his way out of Tennessee anyway. Or Brissett. Or Wentz. None of these guys are more than game managers at this stage but they'd still have been a huge improvement over Wilson / Boyle.

But as a Dolphins fan it's good for us as this implosion is to going to screw them for years.

[–] SourBerry1425@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

18-26 isn’t bad at all considering the roster but I’ve seen blatant misuse of high draft picks who are clearly talented and some boneheaded coaching mistakes

[–] Patzzer@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Siriani is obviously #1. Constant success and a SB appearance.

Then MCDC has to be #2. Actual culture and tone change in Detroit and their best start to a season in decades.

Staley has to be gone after this year barring a massive turnaround, IMO. He has one of the best QBs in the league and still can’t stop his team from tripping over themselves.

Arthur Smith is a bust too, IMO but I know less about the Falcons.

Saleh has had it tough but honestly sticking with Wilson wasn’t the best decision IMO.

[–] WestSide75@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I don’t think that sticking with Wilson was Saleh’s decision. He literally couldn’t explain it to a reporter.

Siriani and Dan Campbell are pretty good Saleh is not on the hit seat this season, but his leash is short Smith and Staley are expected to be gone any minute

[–] DerTagestrinker@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

.75 winning percentage “Pretty good”

[–] Winterclaw42@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Sirianni is the only keeper. In theory Saleh is a keeper, but I think he needs to hit the reset button and find a new coaching gig somewhere else.

Nick Sirianni- Great head coach and I wouldn't be surprised if he's the only one from this class that wins a super bowl.

Brandon Staley- Worse than shit he compliments shit.

MCDC- Good head coach and he's got an ever bigger heart should keep the Lions competitive even when Johnson inevitably leaves for a head coaching gig.

Arthur Smith- A professional Mr. Potato Head look alike and knows nothing about utilizing his weapons on offense.

Robert Saleh- Good DC not a good coach.

Urban Meyer- I'm the head ball coach and I can sweep the leg if I want is the exact reason why you don't hire college coaches to the NFL.

David Culley- Nice guy who served a purpose of getting fired.

[–] Empty_Lemon_3939@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Dan Campbell arguably started with the worst situation
