I feel like we have some fundamental value differences so when I find someone who’s like me, I get really happy.

How do I find them?

In hostels 99% of people are actively into drinking

I would say quite a lot of nomads don't drink, most people in hostels are young and on vacation trips.

You could also just have non-alcoholic drinks and still hang out with people drinking.

[–] amesolitaire_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

damn good luck. it’s very difficult to find that. people always look at you in a weird way when you say that. a bit odd but I used (as a girl) bumble friends to find like minded people on that point

[–] Admiral-PoopyDick@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Maybe look at hostels run by Mormons or hostels in a country under Sharia law

[–] richardrietdijk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don’t stay at hostels, which helps. I choose to stay a bit longer per place, so i can rent somewhere which often turns out way cheaper.

Staying in hostels 365 days per year would drive me insane.

[–] HighOnGoofballs@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

See if there’s a Kava bar or similar, those are usually full of folks who don’t drink

[–] Known_Impression1356@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Go to an AA mtg. Seriously. I met a girl in Tulum who was in AA. Then I found out a half dozen of our mutual friends were in it too. I had had no idea. Very warm an welcoming place there at least.

[–] giraloco@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wow that's so strange. Someone should start a Friends Anonymous franchise to meet new people!

[–] RegisterOk6206@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Try bath houses and saunas. Met lots of folks in the ice bath at Amo SPA in Canggu or the steam room at the Istana in Uluwatu. A lot of people go there every evening instead of visiting a bar.

Other activities I’d recommend are yoga, HITT and breath work classes, entrepreneurship meetups or worshops.

Find the local running club that runs in the morning.

I find people aren't drinking as much, but vaping seems much more common.

[–] MCStarlight@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Alcohol-free bars

[–] Low_Union_7178@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Digitwl nomads don't stay in hostels. That's more of a backpacker thing.

Can you hang out with people who drink but just do other activities where they are not drinking?

[–] ohliza@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Skip the hostels. Outdoor who don't drink tend to do morning stuff like running or yoga or other physical activities. I'd try those.

[–] saintbarley@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I try to stay in more alternative hostels if I have to but prefer private accommodation for this reason. Meet people at gym classes/yoga/health cafes.

Haha I wanna say find a Muslim traveller but then some people just have different persona when they travelling… haha

[–] crackanape@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

How do I find people who don’t drink while I’m traveling?

I don't drink while you're travelling. It's my annual sober spell.

[–] phantasmagoria12345@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Honestly, what do you love to do? People are recommending different activities, but if they're not your jam, you're just going to be bagging someone else's bread. No sense going to a certain activity if it's not your thing.

What's your intention? You can meet people anywhere. In a grocery, on the bus... It's all about your energy and frequency. I meet people randomly and regularly that way. And usually if I remain open to the possibilities, I'm surprised by the outcomes. Suspend your expectations. Vibe as someone you love and you'll find your people wherever you are ("wherever you go, there you are"). Divine timing will arrange it.

[–] idkifimalive@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Diving timing is son of a bitch I tell you that

[–] phantasmagoria12345@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Nah, it may feel that way sometimes, but it's actually amazing. I hope you have an experience soon that restores your faith and hope :)

Let me when you'll be travelling, and I'll do my best to not be drinking then.

[–] captnmiss@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ecstatic dance gatherings

Those are typically sober, no alcohol

[–] wurzelbrunft@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Going to a country like Malaysia helps, where alkohol is scarcely available.

[–] BaoBaoBen@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Scarcely aka in every non Muslim place which is to be found in every mall, hotel, shop lots etc?

[–] Dagdagni@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Muslims countries

[–] AssignmentWorking498@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I’m not drinking alcohol and people act like I’m crazy when they hear i say I don’t like alcohol. Tf is wrong with you all?

[–] vigg1__@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] kittykisser117@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Who cares what other people do. You’re an individual

[–] thirdeye3333@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Go to raves and only hang with people that do MDMA. No alcohol. Good luck

It really depends on your location. I’m not a drinker myself so I don’t go to places known for drinking such as Thailand and bali. Consider a Muslim country - the rest of Indonesia (outside Bali) is Muslim and you don’t get many drinkers at all.

[–] vigg1__@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Good to see there a other ppl not drinking. Now just find them in real life. Will def try the sauna ice baths in canggu

[–] Anywhere_everywhere7@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Weed bars or Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran

[–] Outrageous-Falcon-22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The latter is very creepy. 😂

[–] gastro_psychic@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

AA meeting.

[–] nooshnoosh36@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Agree with what some others have said about finding the right setting and doing things that interest you. If you’re staying in hostels I have two main suggestions. 1. look for the alternative healthy lifestyle ones. Suggest doing some yoga, wellness, or surfing retreats if you’re interested. 2. Also, getting out of the cities. Small towns don’t attract as much party people. I like going to mountain towns with good nature and hiking. I made friends at hostels just by asking if they wanna go on a hike or going solo and meeting people along the hike. Also suggest doing guided tours for things you’re interested in. Birdwatching tours are really nice and start at 6 am (not the hard drinking crew).

Do you know something about online marketing? When you do that, you think about who your clients are, where you can find them and then about a strategy to "meet" them.

The logic can be applied here, too.

If your city has niche-interest events, look into these. I once found super interesting people at a book club.

[–] daniel16056049@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'm travelling for 7+ years now, including phases as a backpacker, DN, etc. I also rarely drink alcohol. Many of my travelling friends don't drink much either.

Social events often default to alcohol-themed when there's no other theme. So go to social events with a specific other focus. You can play volleyball or football, go on dates, find a hiking group, martial arts or crossfit or yoga, dance classes e.g. salsa, various "spiritual" activities, language exchanges, art workshops, walking tours, etc.

I've done some of these things regularly, and the others are regularly available to me but less interesting.

[–] Outrageous-Falcon-22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The transient nature of your lifestyle is not compatible with filtering for the specific people you want in your life. You will find a couple and then move on.

Join a commune or something.

[–] CarolinaMtnBiker@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why can’t you hang out with them anyway? Who cares if they drink and you don’t ?

[–] jewfit_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

AA meetings

[–] jbbfancy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Other than the responses I’ve seen so far- any religious groups that do not drink or filtering out drinking habits on Bumble Friends can also help.

Looking for any overlapping culture and where these people may hang out can be useful when you’re trying to find people like you.

[–] locutusestnobis@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

was the first time in a hostel last week and now i am travelling with two guys I know from there. None of us likes to drink that much. we had one glass of wine in a week... Also the other people there did not drink that much...but yeah there a some party guys in every hostel too. Maybe u need some more time :)

[–] swisspat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do you have hobbies? Gym, boxing, dance, hiking, whatever

No shortage of people who don't drink or socializing that doesn't revolve around partying

[–] idkifimalive@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I like getting to know people. Does that count?

Dating apps, gyms, libraries, coffee shops, parks. I agree with you it is difficult, but I've had success in the aforementioned.

[–] idkifimalive@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You’ve found success in all of those? What kind of success?

Juice bars. Bowl, salad, greens type places.

The more organic the better. Every city has a few in my experience. Ask locals.

[–] techtom10@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You thought about doing a hobby where alcohol isn't really a thing? For example, when I travel I'd like to go to the Jiu-Jitsu gyms. People have more interest than drinking.
