Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. 4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

That 747 is getting amazing ROI

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 64 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Seriously. What a relatively small price to pay for the stupid amount of political capital it's gotten them.

[–] dalekcaan@feddit.nl 33 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Hell, if anything it saves them on not having to maintain a 747

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 3 weeks ago

Especially with the 747 being officially out of manufacturing in 2023. Parts prices and specialized technician costs are just going to go up more and more every year.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Why in the world are you guys assuming that's the only bribe they've gotten?

If a 747 gets me Idaho, what do I need to upgrade to a Dakota? What about Texas?

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Try letting a tree fall on you. Make sure you sue the ever living shit out of whoever owns that tree.

Oh, and then make sure that once you have the power to do so, you pass a law that prevents anyone else from suing the way you did.

(Greg Abbot did this, he's the governor of Texas)

A Qatari base on US soil? Wtfbbq

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago

Turns out that plane wasn't free.

[–] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 94 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Make absolutely no fucking sense.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 56 points 3 weeks ago

Even when you include the bribery it still doesn't seem to make sense.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Have a foreign military on U.S. soil to do things to the U.S. population that the U.S. military might not.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 28 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Looks like it's just to train Qatari pilots without putting the hardware too close to Yemeni drones or Saudi missiles.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up training the next crop of 9/11 hijackers by the end.

Rural Idaho is sure to love their new neighbors. Hope they keep their I Voted for This flags high.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Wait till they start building a mosque for the soldiers, im sure Idaho republicans will love that

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 21 points 3 weeks ago

If Fox News isn’t shitting on it, they won’t bat an eye. All sheep, no brains.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I mean, rural Idaho is basically Qatar already. It's just a christ-o-fascist tax haven for businesses hiding under a flag.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are those flags real, by the way? I saw some trolling with similar sentiment, but I wonder how many would be bold enough to put those up IRL?

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

They definitely exist, but rare in my personal experience. There's a large house near me surrounded by high, castle-style walls. Along the wall facing the street they have multiple flag posts displaying an american flag, a trump flag, a gadsden flag, and a "Yes I voted for this!" trump-like design flag. They used to rotate the flags with POW/MIA, Blue Line and others but it's been pretty unchanged since inauguration.

I've also seen a smaller banner flying from a cybertruck, once.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Oh yeah, that tracks. Along with the cybertruck.

[–] Seleni@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

r/Conservative unironically thinks it’s great, so they probably do too.

Fox told them it was, after all. We have always been at war with Eastasia.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How can anyone know what that place thinks when every thread is a graveyard? I can't take 30 remaining comments of 600 deleted seriously lol

[–] Makhno@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

They wouldve buried him in his tan suit

Oh, I'm sure that will go over well with the notoriously culturally accepting and tolerant folks of Idaho.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Religious authoritarians setting up shop in a state known for right wing militia who support theofascists.

I can’t tell of they’ll be best buddies or be at each other’s throats.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

Well they are different religions so they will obviously be murdering each other, as evidenced by... basically all of human history?

[–] Kevlar21@piefed.social 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Wonder if they’ll deport the Qataris when the building is finished

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 weeks ago

I hope they keep their immigration documents updated otherwise someone's gonna call in an anonymous ICE tip.

[–] Poppa_Mo@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago

I'm sorry what?

[–] simulacra_procession@lemmy.today 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are they bringing their slave labor to build it? Or are Americans to be their slave labor?

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

They know Qataris are Muslim, right?

[–] athairmor@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Muslims with lots of money.

[–] Makhno@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

That makes them effectively white

[–] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 12 points 3 weeks ago

America FIRST! I'm GLAD we're NOT paying our Military right now so we can INSTEAD do This!

[–] ScrambledEggs@lazysoci.al 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

These are the people that "gifted" trump the jet, right?

Trump hates America so much that he makes a mockery of it.

[–] amorpheus@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Trump doesn't hate the USA. He is just using it to further himself, like anything else in his life.

The mockery is that Trump is more of an embodiment of America than most realize.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Are we "great" again yet?

[–] VeryVito@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago

What the absolute fuck???

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Will they have to shave their beards?

[–] Heikki2@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

So this is the quo for the Jet the criminal made for the US

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

I wonder when Bill Burr is gonna land in there with his helicopter to deliver them some free speech comedy! Maybe he can bring Kevin Hart and Pete Davidson and Dave Chappelle.

Will Snoop Dogg get down?

Fuck this timeline.
