Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

This is a case where even I don't like my own opinion, but I think it might be true. If it comes down to average Americans vs. the military, for example, we need as many people on board as possible. As unified a front as salvageable.

Might is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that sentance.

The reality is, in the vast majority of cases, it's simply easier to just wait for them to fucking die. It won't take long since a lot of them are already old. And it saves my mental health in the mean-time.

Bridges only matter when we're talking about opinions.

A belief in basic human rights is not an opinion; it's a non-negotiable requirement in order to take part in a civilized society.

We need to stop talking about building bridges with bigoted fucks who think that "all brown people should be shot" is just an opinion like "I like pickles".

I agree. It's just exhausting. Deculting is about the hardest thing a healthy brain can do. Cultcollege and knitting cultlady on YouTube do commentary on the MAGA cult parallels and talk about the process of deprogramming

I am fortunate to not have any of those.

That's amazing to me. It's nearly 100% of my entire family, except my own children and dogs.

Your children's other parent is a Nazi? Insane

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, pretty much. And my parents, siblings, cousins. All of them are in it.

All of mine that would have been maga died and I had already cut them out of my life for other reasons.

Now there are a number of ex friends I cut out of my for being MAGA, but to be honest with myself I was done with their shit already, and one them had been a friend for 25 years.

Yes they need to be unindoctrinated and move past their past mistakes of supporting a dictator if we are ever going to topple this regime.

You're gonna have to kindly unbrainwash them as much as you can, but shouldn't feel discouraged if the fruits of your labour are small. The prophets couldn't just make everyone act righteously, that burden is too much for any man, you just do your part for as long as it doesn't affect your mental health too negatively. 👍

Building bridges with Nazi? Naw dude

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'm imagining a real revolution in the streets. I believe that would be what prompted at least a few of my family members to snap out of it. If a tank rolls into your neighborhood, it's better to have neighbors on your side than not. That's all I'm getting at.

That's not feasible for members of groups who Nazis deny exist and/or want killed. And frankly, we don't owe our Nazi relatives anything but a bullet just like the other Nazis. Blood doesn't make you special. If you can deradicalize your relatives then fantastic, go for it, but I don't have enough spare energy to help my Nazi relatives anymore after years of screaming at brick walls, and I need you to understand that a lot of people are in the same or more unstable boats. 🔫🔥🗡️⚒️🏴🏴🏴
