I also wonder how it will effect federation latency or so (not sure what to call it). Some Lemmy instances hosted in Australia had major issues with that in the past.
Good point about the jurisdiction. I'm not too worried about making a bit announcement about it though as this change simplifies things - before https://piefed.social/rules talked about needing to be legal in both Germany and New Zealand but now it's just New Zealand. So now there's less restrictions not more or different.

Well, it is true that you are not legally required to inform members if New Zeeland jurisdiction was already in the ToS, but "less" in this case also means less legal protection for your members as the GDPR no longer applies directly.
This makes me want to run a server on the servers in my garage

Well, something simple turned out to warrant a bit more research than I anticipated:
- Patreon requires an account. That can fuck right off.
- Liberapay is for recurring support only. I only do one-time payments that I renew myself manually every year: I don't want any recurring payments going on my credit card. Ever.
- Ko-Fi takes a 5% cut. Meh...
I guess I'll do Ko-Fi...
On LiberaPay you can just select the payment to not autorenew and it becomes in effect a one time donation.
Ah well, too late now 🙂 But I'll bear that in mind next year. Thanks!

Yeah. My VPS had a 40% increase. It's not the end of the world but this AI shortage isn't going away so I expect another 40% increase next year.
I bought a Storage Box from them this month. I need to backup somewhere and I've seen them recommended many times. I need a reputable provider in the EU. If somebody has better propositions, let me know.
If I may ask, I saw a Donate link on PieFed, I actually plan to use it if I stay (my account is just a couple weeks old), I guess there's not enough donations to cover the costs?
There are easily enough donations to cover hosting costs but nowhere near enough to enable me to spend as much time working on the software as it needs.
