People seem surprised that Herbert did draw inspiration from real life events. Dune is losely based on Russian imperialism in the Muslim Caucasus region. Which is also a region rich in oil deposits. This isn't Herbert seeing the future as much as history repeating.

I mean, the savior in the story is literally called the Mahdi, which is also the savior in Shia Islam.
The Mahdi is a universally accepted prophesy, and one many pretenders have attempted.
Most are on par with the Leader of the Boxer Rebellion on that they never read the details behind said prophecy.
Almost like America has been doing this for decades, regardless of which of the 2 parties are in power.

Eh, not so much about history repeating itself or seeing the future. These things tend to happen when you have dumb cretins in power, that don't learn from history. It's dead simple to avoid a mistake if you read a book and someone else has made it and with the power of hindsight you have the solution now. But some people are even too dumb for that.
