The spice must flow

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Harkonnen was only appointed to manage a war, and to decapitate the only threat to the imperial throne.

Just like in real life!

[–] Echinoderm@aussie.zone 95 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

People seem surprised that Herbert did draw inspiration from real life events. Dune is losely based on Russian imperialism in the Muslim Caucasus region. Which is also a region rich in oil deposits. This isn't Herbert seeing the future as much as history repeating.

https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-secret-history-of-dune is an interesting read.

I mean, the savior in the story is literally called the Mahdi, which is also the savior in Shia Islam.

[–] Napster153@lemmy.world 0 points 49 minutes ago

The Mahdi is a universally accepted prophesy, and one many pretenders have attempted.

Most are on par with the Leader of the Boxer Rebellion on that they never read the details behind said prophecy.

Almost like America has been doing this for decades, regardless of which of the 2 parties are in power.

Keeping with the story, if only Iran had a white savior to come and free them! /s

I'm not saying you have to be on drugs to imagine space sex ninjas on cocaine planet, but I am saying something was on.

Just your average dream when taking melatonin

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 34 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

Is there a drug that gives you visions of the future?

[–] JustJack23@slrpnk.net 23 points 22 hours ago

Herbert was on spice when he was writing Dune in 1965 because how else he could see the future of the USA?

[–] Phantaloons@piefed.zip 1 points 10 hours ago

Look at its past.

[–] Jiggs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Possibly because history tends to repeat itself. Especially in case of US starting conflicts there. Could easily see the Operation Ajax being what he based the book on.

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 10 points 19 hours ago

Same with cyberpunk lore. Often that reads like current events, but in the end it's extrapolation of events back then mixed with knowledge of history.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago

Well the red flags have always been there from the beginning but the people chose to look the other way, considering the genocide of Native Americans had been a policy since the beginning.

[–] Dzheyk@sh.itjust.works 37 points 1 day ago

This made me giggle in the best way possible

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Whatever drugs he was on, I want some. Just like one or two doses. So I can forget about all this bullshit for a little while. 😮‍💨

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Listen, there may be a drug at the gas station called spice, but do NOT smoke it!

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago

I prefer my spice vintage:

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Will it help you forget or will it make you see every potential outcome?

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

We can resurrect this pile of shit

[–] gh0stb4tz@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s well known that shrooms inspired him when he wrote the Dune series.

[–] Chaunticleer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 21 hours ago

It was not known to me but based just on the description of melange and how Paul saw reality after taking it, it should have been obvious

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 day ago

Frank Herbert and Philip K. Dick were high as fuck and they were creative but very fucking stupid

[–] spacegoat@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

How big is his dick, canonically

[–] binux@sh.itjust.works 1 points 16 hours ago

He’s got chode energy for sure

[–] silver@das-eck.haus 7 points 1 day ago

Frank was on that Algerian cinnamon

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

Corn. Beans. Why are hu-mans so tedious.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

Eh, not so much about history repeating itself or seeing the future. These things tend to happen when you have dumb cretins in power, that don't learn from history. It's dead simple to avoid a mistake if you read a book and someone else has made it and with the power of hindsight you have the solution now. But some people are even too dumb for that. Enter the world of Donald Trump.
