I haven't been watching much in terms of actual shows for a good while, then while listening to a podcast a host casually mentioned they had rewatched Chernobyl, how it still holds up, that there's a reason it got as much acclaim as it did, etc. So I thought I'd give it a go and wow, loved it (still one episode left to watch).

Had me thinking, what else have I missed out on? What are some "absolute cinema" TV shows that still hold up and and are considered must watch?

  • Bojack horseman (better under lsd/shrooms)

  • The Beatles: Get Back!

  • Ordinary Denazification (start of the Ukrainian war with a lot of nuances)

  • Ugly Americans (simple fun)

  • the Act of killing (though film, it is worth it)

Check out Westworld.

Stop at the end of the first season and you have seen perfection

[–] krisevol@lemmus.org 1 points 54 minutes ago (1 children)

Do you get a satisfactory ending at the end on season 1?

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 49 minutes ago* (last edited 49 minutes ago) (1 children)

Yes. It is a complete arc.

S2 was chiefly made up of rejected s1 material, 3 and 4 tried to build a convoluted mess of futher storytelling.

They're watchable...but if they'd stopped at s1 they would have a perfect, devastating arc.

Nice. I'll give it a shot.

Andor!

Best Star Wars content in a lonngggg time

Better Call Saul! I like it even more than Breaking Bad

[–] fantacyde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 hour ago

I do love that Andor gives a glimpse into the lives of the other people involved and in proximity to the events.

how it still holds up

Jesus Christ, the show came out in 2019... Are we really asking if things from 2019 "still hold up"?

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago

That's so pre-pandemic.

There have been no major innovations in film technique for much longer than that, so they make a good point. 10 years is not a long enough interval to call filmed media old, unless someone is quite young and lacks context

Deadwood, Justified, and various Gundam series are the ones I always come back to.

The Dropout.

Dramatization comedy about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos.

All the scenes with the Walgreens team are hilarious

The Detectorists. It's a low stakes, peaceful little romp around the english countryside in search of the minutiae of some people's lives. Very, very funny

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, so I’ll go ahead and give a shoutout to The Queen’s gambit. It’s easily one of the best shows of the past 20 years and it’s a limited, 7 episode (iirc) series.

[–] Zannsolo@lemmy.world 1 points 35 minutes ago

Limited series are the best.

Chernobyl has a lot of problems with inaccurate anti-soviet tropes.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 4 points 29 minutes ago

I hate the anti soviet tropes, but you can't expect a total absence of these tropes from a series from HBO about soviet union. People did a good job overall
