McConnell was rushed to the hospital in mid-June for an undisclosed medical reason, with his spokesperson David Popp issuing a vague statement regarding the reason for the hospitalization. It wasn't until last week that media outlets learned McConnell had been discovered "unconscious" at his home and had to be administered CPR for potential “cardiac arrest.”

It remains unclear why McConnell’s staff refused to share details, but some, including independent journalist and crypto commentator Adam Cochran, have a theory.

“In Kentucky, a special election to replace a Senator will NOT be called if it’s closer than 3 months till the next election,” Cochran wrote Saturday in a social media post on X. “If McConnell’s condition is clearly unfit for office, they’d hide that to avoid being forced to submit a resignation letter until after that date.”

“So all they have to do is drag their feet until [the second Tuesday in August], then tell you that he didn’t make it,” Cochran continued. “And in turn block Massie from disrupting an otherwise safe Republican seat.”

David Morris, a journalist and author, also appeared to endorse the theory with a brutal jab at McConnell and his legacy.

“Mitch McConnell remaining technically alive for an extra three weeks because of a manipulative procedural maneuver is exactly how he would have wanted to go out,” Morris wrote in a social media post on X.

Laura Loomer has said that he’s brain dead

Decide for yourself how much credibility you give her

In my opinion if an elected official can't respond to a request for physical proof of fitness for the job by those they supposedly represent then they should automatically be removed from office and elections for a fit replacement is called.

Republicans cheating? No way.

Anyways, it sucks we have to wait for traitors to die of old age in this country.

[–] Mediocre_Bard_Redeux@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Can't somebody file a lawsuit to compel them to produce their representative?

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 4 points 22 minutes ago

We'll have to ask the Supreme Court...

Ahh, 5 to 4, huh?

5 more weeks of weekend at bernie's-ing the expired turd doesn't sound like a fun job. I'll take solace in that at least.

I want to know specifically who decided to use the word 'astonishing' in this headline?

[–] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 21 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

lil' bitch clung to power until he died. And every decision he ever made was to further his own self-interest, or hurt others. A true piece of shit. May he never know peace. May his soul remain forever fragmented and separate from the eternal ethereal coexistence we all will one day share. May he wander forever alone and afraid.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago

I'm voting for the Prometheus ending.

On repeat. Every day. Forever.

Nice clickbait title!

Can someone explain the issue here with the three months? It talks about how Massie might make a grab for the seat. What does it matter if it is a special election or regular election? What dynamic changes that makes a regular election more secure than a special election? Is it the primary process?

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (2 children)

According to Kentucky election law, independent candidates have until “the second Tuesday in August preceding the regular election” to file to run in the case of a vacancy that occurs after the state’s June filing deadline.

Massie lost the primary last month, in June, for the Kentucky house seat. He is not eligible to run in the standard election coming up as he did not file before June to run for McConnell’s position since you can’t run for two positions at once.

If McConnell is dead or incapable of holding office, a special election will be held and Massie could make a play for his position.

If he is declared dead with less than 3 months to go before the standard election they will just leave his seat vacant until that time.

So basically they are buying time until the 2nd Tuesday in August to block Massie from running.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 minutes ago

Filing deadlines make sense.

It's not lost on me that you quoted the original article... Thanks for spoon feeding me after it apparently went over my head.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 9 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Even in death McConnell apparently gets to rat-fuck the country one last time.

Could always steal the body and defile it in public.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 4 hours ago

Subverting democracy to the bitter end.

Rest in piss, you evil turtle.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, is it written anywhere in the Constitution that you actually have to resign once dead?

[–] philipp_@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 hours ago

SCOTUS be like: "Are we talking democrats ore republicans here?"

[–] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 10 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

How often has he been seen since he started freezing mid-speech? His brain was probably cooked a long time ago, and his vegetable condition is just now being leaked.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 8 points 4 hours ago

This government is not legitimate.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 12 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

How about a wellness call for his room at the place he's supposed to be at? They legally have to do that.

[–] amgine@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

The problem is the integrity of the people doing the wellness check

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

In practice, the local pd would get shoed away by federal security before they got anywhere near the turtle's room.

Feel sorry for the regular nurses that have to work the floor and keep silent about it. They probably forced them to sign NDAs with massive damages for disclosing the truth.

[–] nickiwest@lemmy.world 1 points 47 minutes ago

NDAs are probably not needed because HIPAA would stop them from disclosing information about a patient.

[–] braxy29@lemmy.world 1 points 55 minutes ago

plus i'm sure any information they have is protected under HIPAA. i expect consequences for disclosing what they know could be very steep for them, no NDA required.

How would Republicans...checks notes...being Republicans be in any way the least bit "astonishing"?

The conservative movement and their party is just full of awful scheming dirtbags. Murc's Law is a thing for a reason. Everyone, even the dipshits that keep pushing Murc's Law, all expect them to be the worst human beings.

There is nothing "astonishing" about any of this, if true. It's just Republicans being Republicans.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

The conservative movement and their party is just full of awful scheming dirtbags.

When conservative voters make it clear they have no standards the worst of the worst of our society know they can move in and setup shop.

This is all on braindead amoral bigoted conservative voters.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago

Conservatism is ultimately an exercise in collective selfishness. One subset of the population decides, "we're going to vote together to give ourselves special rights and privileges and suppress everyone else." Everything else is just window dressing. Progressives actually try and believe in real principles, which is why you don't see such rat fucking behavior. If you're ultimately at least trying to be a good person, winning through cheating kind of takes the fun out of it.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 18 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Does it even matter if he's dead or alive? People should question his ability to do the job he was elected to do regardless. The fucker has been glitching for a while now.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

He may have been elected for another job, but the jobs he was paid for was to screw the average family for generations and destroy democracy.

[–] mcv@lemmy.zip 57 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

The article has a point. His death being manipulated and leveraged politically to keep a seat for the Republicans is exactly what he would have wanted.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 3 hours ago

To the point it wouldn't be shocking if he made it part of his will

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 11 points 5 hours ago (3 children)

And republicans have no shame or morals so they would absolutely do something like that.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

We need to call the long slow coup out for what it is.

The entire goal of Republican efforts has been to subvert the Constitution for a long time.

Weekend at Mitchie's.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 21 points 7 hours ago

Beshear should force the issue and appoint a successor. Let them dispute it with proof of life or STFU.
