If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.

Move on... Nothing to tree here

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

In the DR, especially in Santo Domingo, there are a lot of Norfolk Island Pine trees / Araucaria. They are the only conifers that can exist there at sea level, so they look super out of place surrounded mostly by palm trees and other tropical plants

They look exactly like the fake cell phone tower trees (photo below of them somewhere else), but they are actually real. Really threw me for a loop seeing them when I was there

Needs a big muscular cartoon arm holding a sign that just says “Tree!”

[–] NewSocialWhoDis@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 hours ago

The palm tree ones are kinda cute though

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 14 points 7 hours ago

How do you do, fellow plants?

We have a bunch of these disguised radio towers around here and it's extra funny because most of them are alone out in a flat, dusty field with no trees around, or if there are other trees, absolutely none of them are evergreens so the tower still stands out like a sore thumb. They would look better as cactus, even though cactus isn't even common in this part of the state.

Hello, nothing here except cactus.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 13 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

To be fair, it looks more like a real cactus (yaknow... other than the size) than the conifer style looks like a pine tree 🤷‍♂️

[–] zqwzzle@lemmy.ca 5 points 7 hours ago

Less out of place but still comically odd.

[–] SolSerkonos@piefed.social 3 points 5 hours ago

as someone from a place without cacti... fooled me idk.

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 5 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It's a fake tree hiding radios you may have used to download the jpeg of the fake tree

[–] arin@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

One must first upload for others to download said JPEG

[–] janus2@lemmy.zip 26 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

hehehehe I love fake tree/cactus disguises for equipment. If they ever figure out how to make hyper-realistic ones, I hope they use the comically fake-looking ones instead, because they're way funnier

[–] arin@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

RF interference gets worse from shorter wavelengths in 5g unfortunately. The same people who hate these antennas are also the same people who complain that they don't get any good signal. This is just a compromise by bending over backwards

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 2 points 4 hours ago

Yup, and these disguised sites can cost 3-5x as much to install and maintain depending on the specific style needed for the area.

It also limits the compatible networking hardware that can be used, which can be more expensive than what's necessary for those locations.

[–] evasive_chimpanzee@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

They don't look too far off from some species of araucaria

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 15 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I don't understand. Just some picture of normal trees? Why the caption?

[–] kaotic@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

One of those trees is not like the others… AKA it’s fake.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 hours ago

Yeah I was just joking because it's so obvious lol

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 9 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Why don’t you make like a tree and get outta here

[–] crozilla@lemmy.world 0 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

ALL cell towers should be disguised. They’re blights on the community.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 4 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Found the NIMBY that demands the 5x more expensive equipment, that isn't as capable because it has to be hidden, and still complains about service being bad.

Do you have a problem with the look of solar panels on houses as well?

Probably on your HOA board too.

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 hours ago

Yes, but ALL should be clearly marked
